Checking Out The Garmin Strength Training Workouts

It’s tempting to let this blog go dark for a few weeks while I am sidelined from running, spinning, and Orangetheory with my DVT diagnosis, but in keeping with my perseverance tag line, I will keep going.  My second week was more boring than my first, with no business trip and no weekend bike ride.

Just as I was losing motivation for my strength training, Garmin released a catalog of strength workouts you can download to your device. Sometimes mixing it up is all it takes to get through a slump.

The Garmin Strength Training Workouts

As with all things Garmin, finding the new strength training workouts is a multi-step process. From the home page on your app, tap the “…/more” tab, then select “Training,” then select “Workouts,” then select “Find a Workout.”

There are several screens of workouts to choose from. They range from beginner to intermediate to advanced, run from a few minutes to 70 minutes, and include tabata, yoga, and stretching programs.

I opted for the “intermediate” level 30 minute “Hotel Workout.”

It includes 8 different exercises, including jumping rope (which I replaced with bouncing on my mini-trampoline) and a core exercise.

To add a workout to your device, you tap “save to my workouts” and then sync your device. On your device, access the activity menu, select “Strength” and choose the workout.

While I like this workout, I’m not sure I will use my watch to do it. I prefer to do strength workouts as circuits, so I don’t have to rest between sets. This workout is programmed to do two or three sets of each exercise before moving on. On the other hand, I think it would be great for the tabata workouts, to have the work/rest intervals timed for you.

Weekly Run Down

Here’s how my boring week went down:

Monday: 1 mile Scooby walk + strength workout + 1 mile Scooby walk
Since I’m antsy from not working out, I’ve taken on more of the evening Scooby walks.

Tuesday: 1 mile Scooby walk + strength workout
… except Tuesday, when I had a headache.

Wednesday: 1 mile Scooby walk + Garmin Hotel Workout
I tried the Garmin Hotel Workout, modified to do it as a circuit.

Thursday: 1 mile Scooby walk + Corepower Yoga
Yay for yoga! The one studio class I can still do.

No swelling!

No evening Scooby walk because I attended a reception after working celebrating the 20th anniversary of someone else’s patent law blog. It was much fancier than I expected, held at the top two floors of a popular D.C. bar. You had to be on the guest list and were escorted to the elevator, which had an attendant. There were fancy cocktails sponsored by different law firms, but I stuck to my IPA. There were three food stations (carved beef, tex-mex, chicken wings + mac & cheese) as well as passed appetizers (mini quiche, mini tacos, shrimp cocktail). Can you imagine throwing such a party for your blog?

Friday: 1 mile Scooby walk + strength workout + 1 mile Scooby walk

Saturday: 2 mile Scooby walk + Garmin Hotel Workout + 1 mile Scooby walk
My husband went camping, so no bike riding. πŸ™  I took Scooby on a long morning walk and then did the Garmin workout again.

Sunday: 1 mile Scooby walk + CPY2

Nothing can brighten a gloomy day better than hot yoga with a friend. It’s been too long since Deborah and I got together!

Note the prop to make us even!

How fun that you and Deborah got together for yoga! I love it! Blogger friends are THE BEST. I got to spectate with Marcia today.

A patent law blog, huh. Bet that’s some exciting reading! :p

  2. therightfits says:

Love the block to make you and Deborah the same height πŸ™‚ Perfect! Glad you two could meet up for a class.

I am sorry to hear about your DVT diagnosis. I hope you’re not in too much pain.

    • Coco says:

Luckily we practiced standing on blocks during class!
This time my DVT doesn’t hurt at all – which is good, but makes it harder to stay on the sidelines.

  3. Kim at Running on the Fly says:

I had to laugh at you standing on the block next to Deborah πŸ˜‰ At our wedding last night, I was wearing almost 3-inch heels…and you know I’m already tall LOL I was intentionally “slouching” in most of the pics with my cousins so I wouldn’t be towering over everyone more than usual. #tallgirlprobs I’m glad to hear you’re finding alternative workouts to get your through your DVT recovery πŸ˜‰

  4. So great to see you today! Everyone seems to have noticed the yoga block ha! I don’t pay too much attention to the Garmin emails so I totally missed this new strength training program. Looks like some great options for travel especially. Thanks for joining!

  5. I did notice that prop, LOL!

I can’t even imagine having one blog for 20 years (even though I’ve probably blogged that long, it’s been over multiple blogs) and certainly not throwing a party like that — for anything, ever, actually.

WTG on staying active with limitations!

  6. Birchwood Pie says:

What the what I had no idea that Garmin had strength workouts…looks like a lot to choose from, that’s a very handy thing to know.

I guess all of us WRD folks missed the mark on our blogs, if only we’d gone into patent law;-)

  7. I had no idea that Garmin had workouts like that- good to know! It sounds like you are doing well staying active. How fun that you were able to get to a yoga class with Deborah!

  8. I had no idea about the Garmin strength program. I use it only for running so I was not aware of it. That party sounds fancy! Now I am curious about that blog. πŸ™‚

  9. Chaitali says:

I hadn’t seen the Garmin workouts, thanks for sharing! I’m going to have to use the hotel gym a couple times this week so I might give that a try.

  10. runswithpugs says:

That sounds really cool! I think it’s a great resource for people who are traveling or need to change things up!

Sounds like a fun and swanky party! I love fancy little events like that. I would love to throw one for my blog, but it’s probably even better just to get invited. πŸ™‚

Your perseverance is admirable. You should be proud of yourself for working though the hard times and keeping it going.

  11. kookyrunner says:

I didn’t even know that Garmin had strength training workouts – that’s awesome!
So glad you got to meet up with Deborah this weekend – she’s such a sweetheart!

  12. Thanks for sharing the Garmin strength training workouts – I wasn’t familiar with them at all. I’ve been doing more strength training vs. running so this would be helpful.

  13. Darlene says:

Chin up. Hope you’re back at it soon.

How cool to do yoga with Deborah. Ha ha on the block.

  14. Marcia says:

Ha! I did not see the “prop” until you called it out! Sounds like some blog party! How did I not know Garmin offered strength workouts??

  15. I love that photo with Deborah! You’re doing a good job finding alternative workouts – I had no idea Garmin had strength workouts.

And, that’s some party – for a patent law blog?!

  16. Madhusree says:

Looks like you had lots of fun during the weekend…Same as Marcia…Did not notice the block until you pointed it out…Partner yoga is so much more fun…you can get into the poses deeper…simply love it!

  17. Cute picture with Marcia! (and the block, haha!) I have created a lot of workouts on my Garmin for running and I had NO idea those other workouts were there. I’m going to check them out now! I guess you just never know what you will find when you push a different button πŸ™‚

  18. Cari says:

    Prop for height, awesome!
I’m going to come back to this for the Garmin workouts. I really need to take a class

  19. mareflynn says:
