Physical Therapy Runfessions

It’s the last Friday of September, and I’ve got some juicy physical therapy runfessions this month. Join me at the runfessional over at  Marcia’s Healthy Slice to cleanse our souls soles and get a fresh start for October and the last quarter of 2023.

You also may be joining the Fit Five Friday Link-Up with DarleneMichelle, Renée, Jenn, and Zenaida.

Physical Therapy Runfessions

I’ve been going to physical therapy once a week for a few weeks now. The place I go is about a 15 minute walk from my office (depending on traffic lights) and I’ve scheduled morning appointments so I don’t have to stress about being able to break away from my desk in the middle of the day. To make the transition to work as smooth as possible, I runfess I’ve adopted a new PT-day dress code.

Not bad, right?

For PT, I wear one of my longer black SkirtSports skorts with a t-shirt. Then when I get back to the office I change my top and shoes into something more office-appropriate—especially with our relaxed post-covid dress code.

I runfess that while my physical therapist understands I need to keep running and will run when work takes me to Boston, New York, Boston (again), and Chicago, I know my stubbornness frustrates her.

You ran how many miles in NYC?

In an attempt to get ahead of my stupidity plans, she asked if I was interested in doing any races any time soon. I runfess I am not really, but I mentioned the Jingle All The Way 15K in December (although now I don’t see it on any race schedules). She suggested we work together to ramp up my mileage over a long lead-in time so we have time to back-off and ramp back up if we need to. I runfess it feels pretty good to have a PT who will stick with me for the long term—as long as I don’t ignore her advice too much.

I runfess that while I am a good patient as far as doing my PT exercises, I still struggle with motivation. My latest strategy is to leverage the 45 min Peloton walking classes. My exercises don’t take me that long, but 48 min (with the intro and post-class stretching tine) is the perfect length to cover a walk with Scooby and my exercises (with a pause in between).

Half of that walk was really PT exercises

I runfess that if it’s wrong to rack up Peloton minutes just because I’m not doing what the instructor says, I don’t want to be right. 😝 I’m still walking for the first 1/2 of the class, and I’m still exercising.

If you’ve ever been in physical therapy, were you completely honest with your PT?

  1. I have been to PT, but I’ve been very lucky that it’s never been long term. So yes, completely honest. I was paying out of pocket, why waste the money? Or possibly derail my recovery?

I guess maybe I’m not a “real” runner because I’m okay with less running.

Anyhoo . . . well, it’s not like you’re cheating Peloton out of their money so you do you. 🙂

I’d be terrible at PT. I mean I was. I did what they said if I agreed with them. Lol.

Hope you can again when you travel. That keeps one sane.

    That outfit is perfect.

  3. Deborah Brooks says:

It is great that you have found a PT who works with your goals. It is hard to stick with it. I have gotten into the walking classes and they are helping me get out the door in the afternoon. Have not played them while doing something else

  4. Jenny says:

I think you’ve found the perfect solution to the PT exercise boredom. If you were sitting on the couch eating bonbons while listening to a Peloton workout, that might be a case for the Peloton police. But you’re not! You need something to make the exercises more fun.
Glad your PT is on board (somewhat) with your running plans. And I hope everything is feeling good! We should all be so diligent about rehabbing our injuries.

  5. Michelle says:

I like that your PT supports your running plans. PT exercises get boring real quick so if using the Peloton class helps to get you through it I say why not?!

  6. Sounds like your PT is a keeper! Mine was great, and she kept me motivated to stay on task with the at-home work. I use the Peloton classes a lot for my walks, and I runfess they’re not just walking classes that I’m listening to, LOL. I like the music & playlists!

  7. Jenn says:

The one time I was in PT I was so very honest. l think it was different because I was dealing with broken bones and didn’t want to jeopardize anything.

    Just be careful!

Love that you can just walk there!

  8. Marcia says:

I’ve walked out of PT offices and never gone back when they sit there and tell me how horrible running is. I’m glad your PT mostly goes along with your plans. This is why I love my sports Chiro. He’ll never tell me not to run. Haha!

  9. Debbie says:

That’s great that your PT is willing to work with you and understands your need to run while on business travel. Wonder what happened to Jingle All the Way? I’m good with doing my PT exercises and still do some of the ones assigned to me last time I did PT (2019-2020) because I feel they’re so good for me.
