Working Out In Wilmington

Last week work took me to Wilmington, Delaware, for a trial. Our schedule was grueling, but each day I managed to drag myself out of bed with just enough time to squeeze in a workout and Starbucks run before I had to meet with my team. Working out in Wilmington wasn’t as fun as Hell Week, but it got me through.

I enjoyed my two block walks to Starbucks.

Working Out In Wilmington

We were staying in the Doubletree, which had a decently-sized, extremely well-lit, but  sparsely-equipped gym. It also was really warm, with no way to adjust the temperature. By the end of the week, I ventured out to run. I took plenty of photo stops, but otherwise I just ran (no intervals). My pace is still much slower than it was 6 months ago, but it felt so good!

Sunday: This was my longest hotel gym workout. I started on the treadmill for some run/walk intervals and then did a short strength routine.

There was this set of weights, one piece of universal equipment,
and a rack of medicine balls.

Monday: 3 miles on the treadmill
I walked for 5 min and then ran 2:1 intervals at an increasing pace until I hit 3 miles, doing most at 6.0 mph.

I packed all my OTF Hell Week t-shirts
for my own personal hell week. đŸ˜‰

Tuesday: Hotel gym strength workout
I couldn’t take any photos because my client also was using the gym đŸ˜‰

Wednesday: 3 miles on the treadmill
Again, I walked for 5 min and then ran 2:1 intervals at an increasing pace until I hit 3 miles, doing most at 6.0 mph and the last at 6.3 mph.

Wilmington Treadmill Workout Summary

Thursday: 4 mile run
One of my coworkers had scoped out a safe-ish route to a pretty park along Brandywine River. I ended up running on the opposite side of the river, through a park past the Brandywine Zoo.

Friday: This was my shortest hotel gym workout. I walked on the treadmill for 5 min, and then pushed through a 30 min strength routine.

Saturday: 4 mile run
It was 26F when I headed out, but I had packed the right gear. I ran the same route as Thursday, but on the other side of the river. There was a canal that ran parallel to the river. It was very lovely and serene.

Sunday: 22.7 mi bike ride
It was great to be back at home and out on my bike for the first time in a month! We kept an easy pace on the W&OD trail.

Looks like you found a pretty place to run!

  2. Marcia says:

Looks like you made the most of your time in Delaware. I wonder who designs hotel workout spaces. It’s anyone’s guess what you’ll find. Hooray for a nice long bike ride. I suspect our riding season is over in Chicago with the weather we’re having.

  3. Way to make the most of a travel week! I am not a big fan of winter cycling outdoors. Way to get out there

  4. Laurie says:

That park by the Brandywine River is where I ran my first 5k. I used to go to Wilmington to run all the time. Good for you for getting out there on your bike in the cold! I think our biking days are over until next spring.

  5. Kim at Running on the Fly says:

I bet it felt great to get back out on the bike! Poor Gustavas (my faithful biking companion this summer) was put in hibernation this week. He had not seen any action in several weeks anyways, so there was no sense in prolonging the inevitable. I still have not tried the stationary bike in our basement. Anyways, congrats on a great week of fitness, via the compromised gum at your hotel. You certainly made the best of it!

You certainly make the most of your travel. What am active week.

  7. That’s a lot of activity for a already super busy week! Way to get it done. But brrr on the cold run!

  8. That running route looks really nice, especially with the sunrise! Its always nice to have a hotel gym, even if its not the best place for a workout.

  9. Cari says:

    What a great sunrise.
I love DOubletrees for their consistent if not spectacular gyms. Good to have when you need.
Glad you felt up for some solid work outs.
I’m looking forward to a return to routine

The Thursday and Saturday runs look really pretty! Though 26 degrees definitely doesn’t sound fun.

  11. Renée says:

great hotel gym workouts! I’m going to Amsterdam in 2 weeks for a “bootcamp” (not physical – it’s for Treasury) and am staying over 2 nights – I’m going to make use of the hotel gym for sure!

great running and biking too! I keep saying I’m going to get a long bike ride in and haven’t done it.
