Riding The Winter Weather Roller Coaster

Talking about the weather won’t make you the life of the party, unless you’re at a party with other runners. We’re always ready to commiserate over how hot, humid, cold, windy, or stormy the weather has been. This week I mostly rode out our winter weather roller coaster indoors, but I did brave the cold for my long run.

It was in the mid-20s when we started–bring on that sunshine!

Winter Weather Roller Coaster

I like to commemorate the Martin Luther King holiday with a run to the MLK memorial, but when the forecast was downright frigid, I stuck with my regularly scheduled Orange Theory Fitness class. With temperatures in the teens, I didn’t regret that decision.

We had a smaller than usual class size, so Coach Brandon mixed things up and changed the order of the stations. After a short warm-up on the rower, we did the strength workout before heading back to the rowers and then on to the treadmill. For the treadmill workout, we ran 8 minutes for distance, and then did 8 minutes of intervals trying to match that distance–I really pushed myself but fell a few tenths of a mile short.

Tuesday morning it was in the teens again, so I was happy to go to Cyclebar.

Wednesday it was in the 20s when I took Scooby out. With random icy patches on the sidewalk I headed back inside for a strength workout and my PT exercises.

Garmin Timer App

I finally came to grips with the fact that my fancy Fenix really didn’t come with a built-in timer, and found a (free) third-party timer app on the Garmin Connect store. I like that this one vibrates at the last 5 seconds of the countdown (5-4-3-2-1) so I don’t have to keep my eye on it, and I love that it keeps track of how many cycles I’ve gone through (the 5 in the screenshot above). When I’m doing 3 sets of 30 second stretches on each side, I often lose track of how many I’ve done.

Thursday the weather was freakishly warm–but also windy and rainy, so I went to my usual CPY 2 class. It got up to 61F–after a high of 22F on Monday!

Physical Therapy Toe Yoga

I still do my toe yoga before class starts.

By Friday morning it was back in the 20s, so I went back to Orange Theory. For the rowing block we alternated 250M rowing blocks with various arm exercises, and then we worked our arms even more during the floor block. My arms felt like wet noodles by the end of class.

It was still in the 20s on Saturday morning, but the 20s don’t feel as cold in daylight. I ran with my MRTT friend again, but this time the hills kept our pace closer to mine than hers.

Our splits were all over the place, but our average was dead-on.

I feel like this run belongs in a Runfessions post. How could I stop at 11.98 miles??!! The truth is, my Garmin was tucked under my shirt which was tucked into my gloves, and I was so cold I just couldn’t bring myself to check it. Of course, when I got home and saw what I’d done, I was so annoyed! I should be proud that I ran almost 12 miles, but that almost gets under my skin.

Sunday started off in the 20s again, so I bundled up to walk Scooby and then did my PT exercises before church. I really wanted to go for a bike ride, but I really didn’t want to be cold. Since the sky got cloudier as the temperature inched into the 40s, I wimped out and stayed home.

I’m joining Holly and Wendy for the Weekly Wrap!

Deborah and I are looking forward to hosting the Ultimate Coffee Date this weekend. We’ll open the link up on Friday and keep the coffee brewing all weekend.

Do you check your Garmin when it’s really cold?

Congrats on that almost 12 miler. If it was me, I’d call it a day at 12.

The women I ran with at the relay do OTF. One of them was on her 9th day in a row!

    • Coco says:

I know I should round up, but it still bugs me! Wow on those women, and it’s not even Hell Week! I wonder if they’re doing another OTF challenge ….

  2. Toe yoga sounds like something I should add to my routine as well. It was crazy cold on Tuesday looks like it’s headed our way again. I have a Fenix question to ask you will message you. Have a good week!

  3. kookyrunner says:

You had a great week of workouts!

The weather has been crazy this week. I found the weather on Thursday to be so bizarre. It would have been a great day for a run if it wasn’t pouring the entire day lol

  4. Jennifer says:

I do not check my Garmin when it’s really cold. I may or may not (not being silly. it really depends on how i feel) just run until it dings and then walk the rest of the way home just so I can hit an even number. LOL

I really need to check out an Orange Theory class. They sound right up my alley! The only studio I know of is a 30-45 minute drive. It’s just not that attractive when you have to drive that far. 🙁

This whole week of weather has been ridiculous. And more silliness is on the way with that deep freeze next week. UGH!

So, I’ve never downloaded anything to my Fenix 5S. I like the sound of that timer app for both stretching and core circuits. How do I get it on my watch? I’m sure I could figure it out but … I just thought I would ask!

    • Coco says:

I wouldn’t drive that far for a workout other. They are popping up all over the place here.

For the Fenix, you “shop” for apps via the Garmin Connect app on your phone (I think the “store” is on the “more” tab), download what you want, and then it will upload next time you synch. You can different watch faces that way too.

  5. I love the variety of all of your workouts! That’s great that you and your friend got that (almost) 12-miler done in the cold!

  6. Marcia says:

I did not run outside a single time last week and I’m ok with it. Nope, I do not check my Garmin if it is inconvenient to do so. Great long run!

  7. Chaitali says:

The cold weather has really made outdoor workouts tough! I kept it indoors all week last week but I’ve scheduled a meet up with a friend for a run on Saturday so I know I’ll get outside at least one day this week 🙂

  8. Darlene says:

I got in 12 this weekend as well but not nearly as fast a pace.

Another storm is brewing and cold temps returning.

    I’m so over this weather.

  9. Mother Nature certainly didn’t play nice this week! Great job on your run Saturday! I know what you mean about that “almost” being so annoying – I would definitely round up 😉 I never check my Garmin when it’s cold. I like that I can get pace updates through my headphones – too bad I can’t get a distance check as well.

  10. I don’t even have a garmin right now. I’ve never used one. Sometimes I think I should get one.

  11. HoHo Runs says:

Weather was definitely the biggest topic this week. Congrats on a great 12 mile hilly run with temps in the 20’s. I say…you can always add .02 to your next run and call them both “even”. Thanks for linking!

  12. runswithpugs says:

I do check my Garmin when it’s really cold LOL! I have a very elaborate system for shifting my glove and rooting around under my thumbhole to get to it. Of course, I have to wear gloves even when it’s just a little cold because of my Raynaud’s so I have the system down to a science.

I never think about strengthening my toes, so the idea of toe yoga is really quite brilliant. Love it.

I’m glad you were able to get in a mix of indoor and outdoor with the cold temps.

  13. Cari says:

20s and daylight can be absolutely balmy. I”m looking ahead to Thursday and see the high is 18. Office run group is after dark – we haven’t been fair weather runners but I may bail this week

  14. You did great being active considering the weather!

Just got back from a really short walk for the dogs — it’s cold with snow flurries — they were not happy. I ended up shortening it even more than I’d intended to. The next 2 days are definitely too cold to walk them at all.

I actually put my Garmin around my jacket sleeve in winter — but I need to see when my walk/run intervals are.

    • Coco says:

I should wear my Garmin out, too, I don’t really pay attention to my HR on long runs. No walk for Scooby this morning. I draw the line at the teens. He ran around in our yard for a bit, but not for as long as usual!

      • Ah, I didn’t think about that — my Garmin doesn’t do HR.

I am glad the dogs will actually still go out! I had stopped putting sweaters on Lola, as they just seem to make her itchy, but she’s sporting one today.

Even when we walked the dogs Monday, when it was in the 20s in really not that bad, Bandit wasn’t into it. Part of that is he seems to hate that particular coat, but it’s his warmest one!

  15. Renée says:

OMG last Friday I ran 9,94KM. I didn’t check for the SAME REASON! UGH! had I known!!!!

the weather is a very popular topic with last weeks’ weekly wrap! it is crazy for you guys at the moment!! We’re about to get hit again tomorrow. I am talking myself into seeing the positive… (what the positive is, I don’t know yet haha!)

great week for you though! I do toe exercises for my messed up foot – I don’t know that I’d call it yoga but it helps mobility quite a bit.

    • Coco says:

LOL. We can cry over our “short” distances together. My PT used “toe yoga” for the specific exercise of lifting only your big toe or only your other toes. I can’t do it AT ALL without holding the other toes down, but for some it comes easily. Try it. 😉

  16. Toe Yoga is awesome. Will add to my routine. 🙂
