January Runfessions

It’s the last Friday of the first month of the year, which means it’s time for January Runfessions. While the time for making New Year’s resolutions has come and gone, and most resolutions have been broken by now, that’s no reason to give up on your goals. Just bare your soles at the Runfessions link up hosted at Marcia’s Healthy Slice and get back on track.

I’m also joining the Friday Five link up hosted by Lacey and Miranda at Fairytales and Fitness. Make sure you’ve got the February Ultimate Coffee Date marked in your new calendar for next weekend– Deborah and I will open the (link-up) doors on Friday, and keep the coffee brewing all weekend.

January Runfessions

runfess that my 2019 race calendar already is more full than I expected. I’ve actually signed up for the Reston 10 Miler (March 3), Cherry Blossom 10 Mile Run (April 7), GW Parkway Classic (April 28), and Richmond Half Marathon (November 16). I also plan to run the Lawyers Have Heart 10K (or 5K?) (June 8) and Reston Perfect 10 (September 29).  I am tempted to join Wendy for the Lakefront 10 Miler (April 13), but three April 10 milers really would put my physical therapy to the test.

Speaking of physical therapy, I runfess that scheduling my appointments after work has meant figuring out how many different ways I can dress up leggings to get away with wearing them to work. It wasn’t a big deal over the holidays when the office was half empty, but now I feel more self-conscious about it.

Emphasizing the casual in our business casual dress code.

I runfess that after Deborah gave me Aftershokz headphones through her BibRave Pro promotion, I got hooked on Bluetooth headphones and finally caved to the Apple Air Buds. I am amazed at how well they stay put, and love how they snap into the slightly magnetized case. I don’t love having another thing to charge, but at least it can share a cord with my iPhone and iPad.

I still think people look odd
walking around with them dangling out of their ears ….

I runfess that I forgot last Monday was a holiday and signed up for my usual 5:00 am Orange Theory Fitness class. When I realized I didn’t have to get up that early, I got on the waiting list for the 6:00 am and 7:00 am classes.

But then when I got added to the 6:00 am class, I decided to stick with my original plan– mostly because I’d rather be one of the first people using the equipment instead of walking into a room that’s already warm from other people’s sweatfest. ew!

I runfess that even though I think of myself as a savvy gym rat, I have no idea what this is for. It’s sort of squishy and there’s a few of them in different colors at my office gym.

Do you know?

Have you abandoned any new goals yet this year?

I have no idea about that yellow thing. Is it some kind of recovery tool? Is it weighted? Is it alive?

You know I’d love for you to join me in April…

  2. kookyrunner says:

Your race calendar looks awesome! Lots of fun races in there and you’ll get to see a lot of people at the Cherry Blossom race too.

Hmm, I have no clue what that yellow thing is either. I have a much smaller version that I use to roll out my foot but I’ve never seen a large one!

  3. Laurie says:

Not sure what the yellow porcupine thingy is either. Let me know if you find out. I must runfess to a twinge of jealousy at your full race schedule. I got nothing on mime and it will stay that way until I get this hip thing worked out. Enjoy your races this spring!

  4. I would seriously love the Apple airbuds, but the $$ is just too much right now. I’ve heard great things about them.

After 3 10 mile races you’d be ready for a half marathon. 🙂

That ball looks like the one I use for me feet — except mine isn’t at all squishy, it’s hard. Mine is from yamuna — you kind of press your feet on it varying positions. Google Yamuna feet wakers — it’s kind of hard to explain. I have actually been using mine quite a bit lately, but if it’s squishy, it may just be to use on trigger points in your back, your hips, your feet, your glutes, etc.

  5. I like to be the first in the gym as well!

  6. Darlene says:

Wow. Your calendar is starting to look like mine lol

I would love the apple air buds.

Right now I just play my phone out loud – yes rude

  7. I’m guessing that it’s some kind of massage tool. Like a foam roller kind of deal, but I’m not sure either.

And I secretly want some apple airpods too, but I do not want to pay the price for them.

  8. Marcia says:

I hereby crown you QUEEN of the 10 mile race distance! I’m bummed I won’t be at Cherry Blossom to see everyone. I still have to figure out how my training will look BETWEEN Tokyo and London. Thanks for linking!

  9. So many 10-milers – you know how jealous I am 😉 You’ve got a great line-up ahead. I can’t wait to hear what you think of Richmond – it’s on my bucket list!

The yellow thing looks like a footwaker from Yamuna Body Rolling. I have a set but mine are squishy. I love using them after a long run or just a long day on my feet.

    • Coco says:

It does look like that’s what they could be. If I like Richmond enough to do it again, maybe we could do it together in 2020 — or you could sign up for this year. 😉

  10. Is that yellow ball a med ball? Is it weighted? If so, it could be used for strength work. It does look like something to sit on and roll the glutes or legs with (?).

  11. Kudos to you for having so many races planned out. I have nothing on my calendar yet!

Could that yellow thing be some sort of recovery tool for your feet? But why is it sitting with Kettle bells? Please find out what it officially is and let us know!

  12. My daughter loves the apple airbuds too I think I would be afraid of losing them! I am thinking of doing GW as well this year will wait to sign up to see how my running is going. Looking forward to catching up over coffee!

    • Coco says:

I’m definitely afraid of losing them. So far I’m very alert to keeping track of them. Let me know about GWPC! Such a great race and pretty much filled by MRTT. 😉

  13. That looks like a fun list of races to start off 2019!
I think I would like the airbuds, but I fear losing them so I stick to the ones that came with my phone! Haha
I have yet to set my 2019 goals into stone, so I am happy to say I haven’t abandoned them yet! 🙂

    • Coco says:

Well, that’s one way to never break a resolution. 😉 I’m not much at goal setting either. I have a short attention span ….

  14. Janelle @ Run With No Regrets says:

Your racing schedule looks great! I need to sign up for some races, though I cant get too focused on finishing time.

    • Coco says:

I’m making sure I get in long runs matched to the distance, but am not focusing on specific time goals. I’m pretty much over that stage of my running life. 😉

  15. angela@marathonsandmotivation.com says:

Wow, you do have a busy race calendar, but it sounds like a lot of fun!! I would love to do the Cherry Blossom 10 miler at some point.

  16. I wonder if that prickly thing is a sort of pilates type of ball? like where you roll under your feet and work on your balance at the same time? Odd.

You have a nice full healthy calendar so far! Mine was filled and now I’m scrapping everything from the end of March until June… I runfess I dream of signing up for a Half in June like in Tromsø but to be honest no way I’ll be prepared for a Half by then.

    • Coco says:

It’s really hard to have to re-vamp your race calendar once you’ve started looking forward to things, but hopefully it will pay off with a healthier you. 😉

  17. I got my AirPods last year for Christmas and love them, but agree that I think they look kind of funny just hanging there without a cord. 😉

That yellow thing and the orange one under it are for working on balance. They’re called Balance Domes or Balance Pods depending on who makes them. Like the BOSU, they can be flipped and used on either the rounded or flat side.

  18. Cari says:

I <3 the 10m/15K distance. So much fun. You have more locally in a month than we do in a year — TedC 15K in December and Bronx10 in September.
Way to go on sticking with the 5A class.
