Getting The 2024 Party Started

It’s time to get the 2024 party started! Even if you’re not a Pink! fan, you’ve got to admit it’s a fun song. I’m sendin’ out the message to all of my friends, and taking the fun energy into the new year.

Getting The 2024 Party Started

I’m really exicted that I started shockwave therapy for my hamstring this week. It didn’t feel like a party, but it wasn’t as rough as the Achilles treatment.

These different tips make me think of it as a Theragun on steroids.

My doctor started the treatment with a low-energy “warm up” and then increased the intensity at the target areas. The whole treatment only lasted a few minutes, but it was intense. Since there’s a Starbucks across the street from her office, I think I’ll be treating myself to a soothing latte after my appointments. 😉

It’s probably too soon to tell if it’s going to “work,” but so far I think my hamstring is feeling better.

Weekly Wrap

My orthopedist said I do not need to restrict my activities, but I am trying to be cautious because I really want to get better! I ditched the Peloton Pump Up the Volume 7 series I started last week for the Breakthrough Crew’s Jacked January Challenge.

The upper body focus is perfect for where I am now, but there’s enough lower body classes to keep it balanced.

Monday: I started the year with Jess King’s NYE ride. If you are on Peloton, you’ve got to take this ride. The thumbnail photo for the class will show Jess in a tuxedo-looking outfit—she changes into a disco ball towards the end of class—both are amazing Brittany Allen creations!

Tuesday: Tuesday it was time for Sam Yo’s New Year’s Day recovery ride, which was another great class, taught sort of like a mediation.

Wednesday: It was January 3 when I hopped on my tread for my first run (walk + run) of the year. I was heading into the office, so that kept me from caving to the temptation to round up my mileage to 3.0 miles.

Thursday: On Thursday I took CDE’s New Year’s Day ride. The playlist drew me in, and her vibe was calm, but it was not an easy class!

Friday: I had my shockway therapy on Thursday afternoon, so took a self-imposed day off from riding/running on Friday, even though my orthopedist said I didn’t have to. Instead, I took a longer core class and tacked an arms + light weights class onto the upper body class of the Jacked January challenge.

Saturday: 36 hours after my first treatment, my hamstring was feeling better—or feeling less—so I decided to take Scooby out for a walk + run before an icky weahter front moved in. I had created a 2/1 workout for my Garmin, but accidentally started a different workout with 4/2 intervals, so I ended up doing a more random program, trying to approximate 2/1 intervals. Overall, my hamstring seemed to feel better (less) but not 100% better, which is probably the best I can hope to be after my first treatment. 🤞

Let’s hope my hamstring stays as happy as Scooby!

A huge thank you to Deborah and Kim for hosting the Weekly Run Down link up.

Did you ease into 2024 or jump in with both feet?

I really hope the shockwave helps! I have heard that the achilles is the worst (most painful) place to have it. It’s KILLER there, but it is so close to the bone. I had it on my foot when I thought I was getting plantar, and it wasn’t anywhere near as painful (and it worked!)

That looks like a great strength challenge! I like the mix of upper and some lower. Good luck Coco!

    • Coco says:

A lot of others in the group are doing Adrian’s lower body program, so this was designed to complement that, It works for me!

  2. Wendy says:

I’m glad to hear that your hammie felt better after the first treatment! Fingers crossed for success. It worked well when I had PF the first time I tried it.

    • Coco says:

I want to read up more on what it can really do for a partial tear. Does the hamstring repair itself (eventually) without surgery? Or does your body just figure out how to make-do with the rest of it?

      • Wendy says:

I think it can heal itself, but there will be scar tissue and that could affect mobility. Tissue work, PT, etc would help with all that.

  3. Hamstring feeling better is a good start! I’m hopeful for you Coco, you’re doing the hard work (not working as hard). Also great news that you don’t have to restrict activities.

  4. So glad you are feeling the hamstring treatment working already. I will need to take Jess King’s ride-I don’t normally choose her for some reason. Enjoy your new challenge!

  5. Debbie says:

Here’s hoping shockwave therapy does the trick and your hamstring responds in a positive way. Sounds like you’re making smart decisions along the way, too.

  6. Nice week, Coco! Glad to hear things are feeling “less” with the hammie 🙂 Fingers crossed things stay on the upswing!

  7. Jenny says:

Yay for shockwave treatments!!! I’m glad it’s not super painful, but I think you still deserve Starbucks after every session : )
Sounds like the year is off to a great start for you (and Scooby- I’m sure he’s been missing his running partner!)

  8. Susanne says:

I’m so glad for you about the shockwave treatment!! And I’m glad it wasn’t bad. I’m crossing all my fingers that it will help!
Jacked January is a wonderful class name, by the way! 😀

  9. Michelle says:

Love all of the great Pelo stacks!

So happy to hear that you’ve started the shockwave treatments – I really hope it does the trick for you!

  10. Darlene S Cardillo says:

I use Starbucks often as my reward on tough days.

Hope everything works well for you and that cranky hamstring behaves in 2024.

My year is still on stand-by.

  11. Jenn says:

Fingers crossed for the shockwave therapy! I do hope it works!

And way to go on all those rides! It’s always great to have balance and you are definitely making it work!

  12. Cari says:

Soothing latte indeed. So glad you’re finding it helpful. FIngers crossed it stays so

  13. Catrina says:

Yay for a not-so-painful shockwave treatment! I’m sure that over the next few weeks, you will feel a real difference.
I’d be heading to that Starbucks too! You need a treat now and then!

  14. Melissa says:

That treatment sounds intense but hopefully it works! Glad your hamstring is feeling a little better. You have gotten in so many rides — way to go!

  15. I hope the hamstring is still doing well. I haven’t had shockwave therapy before, but I do get super squirmy when my PT uses the gun on certain part of my body. I just can’t take it!! I had a tough Dr appointment today and I wish I hadn’t brought my own coffee along. I really could have used a treat from Starbucks!
