Wrapping Up 2023

Well, we made it to the finish line of 2023! This year had a lot of ups and downs, but looking back over the year reminds me of all the fun times as well as the struggles.

I won’t be sprinting through any finish line tape anytime soon!

Wrapping Up 2023

I don’t usually set mileage goals, and it’s a good thing I didn’t this year, because I would have been even more disappointed.

My Garmin running metrics shows a nearly steady decline as my hamstring got worse and worse. The data from September-December includes miles logged doing run/walk intervals on my treadmill.

When my hamstring was healthy,
I had a great run at the Cherry Blossom 10 Miler in April!

I trace the first twinges back to the Parkway Classic I ran two weeks later.

I don’t regret any of my runs in Copenhagen in August—I kept my pace easy with lots of photo stops.

My Garmin cycling data shows a crazy spike in May, when we did a lot of outdoor rides including the Eastern Shore  Farm to Fork Fondo. I don’t put too much emphasis on the exact numbers because most miles were logged on my IC4 or the Peloton bike at my office gym.

My husband and I enjoyed our first Tour De Fairfax ride in October,
and our lederhosen kits got lots of smiles.

Other highlights of my year included skiing in Vermont in February.

and hiking in Oregon in July.

I don’t think I’ll be skiing while I’m rehabbing my hamstring, but we are planning a national park hiking vacation this summer.

Weekly Wrap

I took it pretty easy this week, facing the reality of my partially torn hamstring. Unfortunately, my orthopedist was sick, so I couldn’t start shockwave therapy—hopefully I will be able to get my first treatment this week.

I started a Peloton strength program with an upper body focus: Pump Up the Volume 7.

It’s a four-week program, with three classes per week.

I also did at least one class a day from the Top 50 Countdown collection.

Yes, I took a 30 minute core class!

I alternated tread and bike days, sticking to 2/1 intervals on the tread for 20-30 min, and keeping it easy on the bike. I really miss being able to push myself—and the endorphins that come from a tough workout—but I am grateful that I can still do so much.

I ended the year with Jon Hoskin’s NYE walk

And a grand total of > 2700 Peloton minutes.

A huge thank you to Deborah and Kim for hosting the Weekly Run Down link up.

Are you looking back on 2023 or already looking ahead to 2024?

You had a great year despite the hamstring issues!
Don’t be disappointed with your running miles, you have a very good reason for the decline.
At least you now know exactly what the issue is and are set on the road to recovery. And you can still bike, do strength classes and do run-walk intervals!!

  2. Darlene S. Cardillo says:

You did have some good runs and races and quite a bit of cycling.

Hope 2024 includes a relief to your hamstring pain.

Not looking ahead to 2024 until my latest injury is healed.

    Happy new year!

  3. Lots of Peloton time, well spent (of course!). I don’t pay much attention to the programs that start (hence the upper-body one you mentioned), so I need to pay better attention. I’m checking this one out. Even though I should be doing more lower-body work, I LOVE upper-body strength so much more. I hope things improve with your hamstring <3

  4. Great job on your Peloton milestones. I am liking the structured programs even more lately. Glad you are finally getting some good treatament on your hamstring and wish you a speedy recovery

  5. Debbie says:

You did some fun activities in the first half of the year. I hope you get your hamstring issues resolved soon so you can resume running, hiking, etc.

    Here’s to a healthy and fit 2024!

You did have a lot of fun in 2023- lots of travels and adventures. And races- but it just goes to show you that running isn’t EVERYTHING. A national park hiking vacation sounds amazing! I’ll be looking forward to hearing all about that.
I certainly hope 2024 is a good year for you! Tell you orthopedist to get healthy so you can start those shockwave treatments!

  7. Jenn says:

I hope things really start to turn around for you soon. It’s hard when injuries get in the way like that.

I’m ready for 2024. I don’t know what it’s going to bring, but it has to be better than this last year.

  8. Which National Parks are you planning on visiting? We still haven’t figured out our summer family vacation yet for 2024. Maybe the hamstrings will make a comeback and you will be able to ski (fingers crossed!).
You got a lot of cycling miles in 2023. I only had 769!
    Happy New Year!

  9. Jessie says:

I’m glad the hamstring didn’t hold you back too much in terms of adventures in 2023! I really hope it helps up and you’re able to get back to what you love soon…

  10. I know it’s been so painful & frustrating, but at least there was some fun stuff too! Doesn’t wipe out the other, I know.

Which park? So many great ones I haven’t been to yet!
