Goodbye 2019, Hello 2020

My December 31 work deadline didn’t leave me any time to join the 2019 Year In Review link up, and right now I really should be packing for my first business trip of 2020, but I’m going to take a quick look at my 2019 stats before I say a final goodbye to 2019 and move on to 2020.

I ended the year with a pretty good balance of activities

Goodbye 2019

The statistic most people are posting about are their 2019 miles. I rely on my Garmin to keep track of my miles, so these numbers may be short a few miles, but they are close enough. I don’t know if the running miles include any Orangetheory treadmill miles, but I know the cycling miles include my Cyclebar classes.

While my running miles were not a nice round number, I like that the running calories were about 50,000–although I doubt that number is very meaningful.

The Orangetheory app doesn’t report how many classes you attended, but I counted 59 classes scrolling through my 2019 history. If I had attended one more class I would have gotten to a nice round number and nudged that calorie burn to 30,000. I really don’t care whatthe numbers are, but I want them to be round. 😉

The Corepower yoga app doesn’t have a statistics page, but I counted 38 classes in 2019. I know I missed a few weeks and doubled up on a few others.

I can’t find any comprehensive statistics on the Cyclebar app, but it looks like I attend 34 classes in 2019.

Clearly Orangetheory is my favorite studio class, but I enjoy the others too!

Goodbye 2019, Hello 2020–Weekly Run Down

Between my daughter visiting and my work deadline, I ended up burning the candle on both ends. I didn’t sleep much, but when stress woke me up before my alarm, I started my day with a workout–or at least a walk with Scooby.

Monday: Orangetheory Fitness
Last class of 2019 and my heart rate refused to get out of the green zone on the rower.

As proof that doesn’t really matter, I compared my calorie burn to other classes with more splat points (minutes with heart rate in the orange or red zone), and you can see that splat points don’t tell the whole story.

Stats: calories — workout time — splat points

Tuesday: Two 1 mile walks with Scooby
Work had to take priority over a morning workout so I could meet the December 31 deadline, but I did take Scooby out first–and once I was done. Yay!

Wednesday: 30 mile bike ride
First bike ride of 2020! Don’t let those blue skies fool you, the wind made the low 40s feel COLD. We probably should have turned around at mile 11, but it was so nice to be outside and, truth be told, I wanted to do “more” on New Year’s Day.

My hips complained about the jump in miles,
but they’ve gotten over it now

Thursday: Corepower Yoga
Our peak pose was Eight Angle pose (which I can do!), and we did lots of twists and hip-opening moves to work up to it. They all felt so good!

Georgetown waterfront at sunrise#Nofilter

I enjoyed a beautiful sunrise on the drive to my office, and dashed to the waterfront to take photos before the sunlight changed. It was worth being cold in my sweaty yoga tights, don’t you think?

Friday: Orangetheory Fitness
We aren’t supposed to take pictures in the studio, but I was able to snap these between class. The top panel shows the floor workout. The exercises were paired, and we did as many rounds as possible of each pair for 4 minutes, doing 10/8/6 reps of the first move and 10 reps of the second move.

The treadmill and rower did a boomerang” workout, meaning you did 4 minutes on the treadmill or rower, then 4 minutes on the rower or treadmill, then 4 minutes on treadmill or rower again. The treadmill workout is on the left; the rower workout is on the right. Between your “treadmill block” and your “rower block” you end up doing each workout three times. Those pulsing static lunges had my quads on fire!

Saturday: 5.5 Scooby Miles
My first Scooby miles of 2020 and it was warm enough to wear a skirt–in the 50s! Our back yard is so muddy from all the rain we’ve had, we haven’t been letting him out to play, so these runs are essential to his well-being too!

Sunday: Strength Workout
It was a late night working with my team, and we’re going to be burning the midnight oil for the net few days,  but I took 40 to myself to move, plank, and stretch.

The big game is next Monday, right?

I’m sorry that you’ve been so busy with work over the holidays and now you’re already onto your next business trip!

You’re so right about OTF. There are some classes where my calorie burn is pretty much the same but there will be a difference of 5-10 splat points between the two.

  2. Wendy says:

I don’t know what splat points are but it looks like you excelled in that statistic! I get the feeling that what you do at OTF is a lot like my bootcamp, minus the treadmill. I love how you are embracing cross training. I think this is going to make us all better runners!

    • Coco says:

I think your bootcamp is much harder! Splat points are just minutes spent in the orange and red zones, which are towards the higher end of your training ranges.

  3. Catrina says:

I love the balance you have in your fitness week – OTF, cycling, yoga, scooby miles and strength.
How can you cycle in the cold? My feet and hands would fall off! Do you plan a break in the 30 miles or is it non-stop?

    • Coco says:

Good gloves are key to cycling in the winter. And I wear Smartwool socks to keep my toes cozy. The only break we took was for a photo stop when we turned around. We average close to 15 mph on the bike patch, so it was about a 2 hour ride.

  4. Marcia says:

What a great mix of activities! Your OTF workouts sound hard but fun. Glad you were able to catch a breather after burning all that midnight oil!

  5. Chaitali says:

That does sound like you got a lot of balance in your workouts in 2019! Glad you were able to get some time for yourself even with that late night work session on Sunday 🙂

  6. I always admire what a great mix of workouts you manage – even with your crazy work schedule! I hope you get a little downtime at work soon!

  7. Debbie says:

You have such great variety in your fitness activities! I basically run. With a little strength. You make me want to get back on my bike!
