Stopping For Death

It’s a dramatic title for a weekly wrap post, but it’s what I did this week. My uncle passed away on December 6, and I rearranged a few holiday plans and stepped away from my year-end in-box to attend his funeral.

stopping for death

All the while, this verse from Emily Dickinson’s poem was running through my head. I don’t stop for much, but I guess I do stop for death to pay my respects and spend time with loved ones.

Celebrating Life

My uncle would have been 83 on December 9th, and lived a good life. Of course we were mourning his passing and tears were shed, but we also shared happy memories and caught up with family members we hadn’t seen in ages.

I think he would love how many of us gathered to see him off to the Pearly Gates.

Weekly Wrap

This week I also fought off a cold, celebrated my husband’s birthday, started physical therapy for my hip pain/abductor strain, and went to my law firm’s holiday party.

Fancy Country Club Gingerbread Houses

My physical therapy exercises target a lot of different muscle groups. Clam shells hit my weak spot dead-on, but doing hamstring curls lying on the floor with my feet on a fitness ball was surprisingly hard. Side planks are pretty easy, but doing 3 sets of 30 second side planks on each side does get hard.

The fitness highlight of my week was getting to wear my new Tiems cycling shoes. The clips are nested in the soles so it’s easy to walk around in them. Plus, they’re super cute!

Aren’t they pretty?

While I wasn’t thrilled when I saw the forecast, our rainy weekend weather gave me a chance left me no choice but to start on my holiday cards and wrapping. My husband wants more time on his birthday bike, though.

Here’s what I managed despite everything:

Monday: Strength Workout  (travel to Florida)
Tuesday: Rest (travel home from Florida)
Wednesday: Indoor Cycling, Physical Therapy
Thursday: Core Power Yoga (peak pose = half crow)
Friday: Orange Theory Fitness, Physical Therapy
Saturday: Indoor Cycling
Sunday: 4.8 soggy Scooby Miles

So sorry to hear of your loss. Glad you were able to be with family to celebrate your uncle
Love your cycling shoe s- great color. Awesome ginger bread houses!

  2. I’m so sorry about the loss of your uncle.

Hope you can keep that cold at bay, and that PT helps with your hip pain.

I’m so sorry to hear about the loss of your uncle. One nice thing about getting together with relatives at a funeral is catching up and reminiscing. I am starting to look at funerals as a celebration of a life well lived rather than a sad time. Altho it is a little of both.

I hope your PT helps with that hip pain.

Yes, I guess we’re getting to that age when funerals are a fact of life. :-/
I have great faith in my PT and am a pretty good patient, so hopefully I’ll be pain-free again soon.

  4. Hope your hip and your cold are feeling better this week. This weather is probably not helping huh?

Love those cycling shoes! What a fun color. Mine are so boring, just white 🙂

Sorry to hear about your uncle. Glad you were able to spend time with family.

Sorry to hear about your uncle.

I think WordPress automatically switched me over to Gutenberg – it’s not freezing but does seem to run a bit slower. It’s ok, but I didn’t have any problems with the old version so would have preferred it to stay….

  7. Sorry for the loss of your uncle. It’s great that there was a large turnout, though for the service. Like you said, despite the sadness, it is a nice opportunity to have time with extended family. Those are killer cycling shoes! If I ever get into the cycling thing, I will definitely need some funky shoes 😉

Sorry for your loss and glad you could make it to the funeral and see family. I wasn’t able to go to my uncle’s funeral due to family drama, which was annoying. Anyway. Love those fancy gingerbread houses and glad you’ve got your yoga and running in, even in a tricky week.

I really love those new cycling shoes – I’ve never seen spinning shoes in any colors besides white and black lol.

I was so sorry to hear about your uncle’s passing. It’s nice that you were able to celebrate his life this week and spend time with your family.

I’m so sorry to hear about your uncle. That’s wonderful that you were be able to be with your family and so many of you were able to be there to give him a send off. I love that Emily Dickinson poem.

  11. So sorry about your loss. 🙁 My parents were the babies of their families, by quite some years, and there are no aunts & uncles left on my side (my husband still has a few).

I have not tried the new WP — I keep hearing people having problems and I’m always really dragging my feet on that sort of stuff.

Glad you’re feeling better, but sorry to hear about aches & pains! It’s always something, isn’t it?

  12. Laurie says:

I am so sorry to hear about your uncle. Getting together with family and sharing life stories, laughing and crying is the best thing to do to deal with a loss.

Pretty gingerbread houses! I want to give one a try. Maybe next year! 🙂

    • Coco says:

I love looking at gingerbread houses, but don’t think I have the talent – or the patience to make one. I’d love to help someone else do it though.

  13. HoHo Runs says:

I’m sorry about your uncle. I’m glad you were able to connect with so many family members and share memories.

I should probably go to the PT for my hip issues. The last time I went it was for my hip and I still do those exercises. But, the pain is different now. Please share your exercises with us!

I’m loving the pink cycling shoes! Thanks for linking!
