Ode To A Rainy Day Runner

Is there a saying opposite to “The grass is always greener on the other side“? One that captures the gut reaction of being glad you’re not in another person’s situation even if they might not have it so bad? Driving home on a recent rainy day I felt sorry for a runner out in the elements, but then realized she might be enjoying herself more than I was. That was the genesis of my Ode To a Rainy Day Runner.

Ode To A Rainy Day Runner

Ode To A Rainy Day Runner

Inching home in traffic,
I see you running in the rain.
I start to feel sorry for you,
But then wonder
If you’re feeling sorry for me.

Would you rather sit in traffic or run in the rain?

  1. I think I’d rather run in the rain!

  2. OH MY GOOD ONE!!!! πŸ™‚ I love your short poem. Sometimes I don’t feel like running in the rain and then sometimes I enjoy it. I suppose I am more likely to enjoy it if it’s warm out. πŸ™‚ I would choose running over sitting in traffic any day.

  3. I think I would rather be running in the rain than sitting in traffic!

  4. Laurie says:

The same thing happened to me just this week! I saw a runner running in the rain in our small town, and even fantasized about asking her if she wanted a ride, then I realized I love to run in the rain. She was probably having a great time!

  5. Wendy says:

So many times that I’m stuck in traffic do I think to myself, I could run this faster! I don’t always love running in the rain, tho, unless it’s warm out and it’s a nice, light rain.

  6. I do hate driving in the rain but I admit if I do see a runner out running in it, I assume they got caught in it and didn’t want to be. I never thought they may be enjoying it.

    • Coco says:

Sometimes I choose running in the rain over the treadmill – then I have to remind myself that I did choose it! πŸ˜‰

  7. I actually kind of like running in a warm rain. Sitting in traffic not so much πŸ™‚ Biking in the rain is another story though πŸ™‚

  8. That’s a tough one! If it’s warm, I don’t mind running in the rain. If it’s cold, not fond of it — but have done it.

But nobody likes sitting in traffic! That is one of the benefits of living in a relatively small city. πŸ™‚

    • Coco says:

I wouldn’t know life without traffic. Traffic was so heavy on the highway on the way to yoga at 5:30 am this morning – ridiculous!!

  9. Chaitali says:

That’s some good perspective right there! It’s funny to think about other people’s situations but I guess we never really know what they are feeling and whether they’re happy to be exactly where they are.

  10. OOH yes – I do love that poem. I often wonder about runners that I see on the street. Many times I think I’d like to be running with them, and then I wonder what “THEY” are thinking. Are they running to relieve stress? Are they running because they are happy? But any run is better than sitting in the car! πŸ™‚

  11. Lesley says:

That’s a good question. I don’t mind warm rain, but I hate wet socks. Is it possible to have dry socks in the scenario?

  12. I’ve never minded running in the rain! I’d rather run in the rain than drive in it for sure!

  13. I don’t mind running in the rain if the temps are warm (like in the mid-70’s or higher). My relay tomorrow is gonna be cool (high of upper 60’s) and there’s a distinct probability there’s gonna be rain…all day ;-( This oughtta be interesting LOL

  14. That’s pretty cool! I like running in the rain!

  15. Oh I like this! I don’t mind running in the rain as long as it’s not too cold – sitting in traffic just leaves me feeling drained and tired.

  16. Angela says:

I suppose it depends if it’s a cold rain, I used to love to run in the rain as a kid and sometimes it’s just refreshing!

  17. Chrissy says:

100% rather run in the rain, as long as it’s not freezing cold outside. I don’t mind summer rainy runs at all. And I hate traffic, lol.

  18. Rachel says:

Haha, this is awesome. I don’t love running in the rain. Unless it’s super hot out. But even then I’d prefer not to. Driving in the rain also isn’t my favorite. Basically, I don’t like rain unless I’m in bed. πŸ™‚

  19. Sitting in the car is never fun! I’d have to say run in the rain. πŸ™‚

  20. Esther says:

What a great poem! I am not a fan of running in the rain OR traffic, but if I had to pick it would be the run!

  21. Farrah says:

haha, I love it! I’d rather run in the rain than sit in traffic (as long as it was just a light drizzle and not a straightup downpour)! I hate traffic so much!

  22. RenΓ©e says:

Definitely run in the rain! I avoid driving because I loathe sitting in traffic!

  23. Cari says:

I can be a fair weather runner at times, but I’d rather run than sit in traffic any day. Just no patience

  24. Cari says:

I can be a fair weather runner at times, but I’d rather run than sit in traffic any day. Just no patience to wait
