What A Difference A Dog Makes

This week was all about figuring out Scooby and getting into a new routine. Luckily I was able to leave work early most days, so he didn’t have to spend too much time in his crate. We also had gorgeous weather–perfect for walking or lounging on the patio with a Nylabone. πŸ™‚

I made it to the Garden Center this weekend,
so those planters aren’t empty anymore!

I knew having a dog again would mean a lot more walking, and my Garmin data shows what a difference having a dog makes. We are trying to take him on three walks a day, and I’ve been doing one or two of the them. Our shortest loop is just under a mile; the others we’ve done so far are just over a mile. It’s fun to see parts of my neighborhood I don’t usually see in the car or on my runs.

What A Difference A Dog Makes

Before, I only met my step goal on my running days, which have dwindled to 1-2x/week. Now, I am hitting my goal every day.

Thursday morning I added some running intervals to our morning walk. At least I was running. I’m not sure Scooby even broke into a trot! He seemed to do well, so I’ll do it again next week.

Weekly Wrap

I had to set my alarm–and actually get up!–a bit earlier to take care of Scooby before heading to my morning exercise classes. On my earliest days my husband did the morning walk, and on Wednesday I tried to sneak out of the house for my 5:00 am OTF class without waking him up, because I don’t want him getting used to being up at 4:30 am!

That OTF class was hard, by the way. We did 4-minute progression runs on the treadmill (bumping up the pace each minute), doing two in the first block (with 1 min recovery in between) and one in the second block. I was toast after the second one.

The other highlight of my week was the Conte’s Hill Ride. After my fourth ride of the season I have my confidence back and now am working on better pacing and gearing. I’m usually bringing up the rear of the middle pack of riders, and know I can keep up better if I ride smarter.

Monday: am dog walk + strength workout
Tuesday:  indoor cycling + pm dog walk
Wednesday: OTF + pm dog walk
Thursday: am dog walk  (w/intervals) + strength workout + pm dog walk
Friday: am dog walk  + yoga + pm dog walk
Saturday: am dog walk  + Conte’s Hill Ride + pm dog walk
Sunday: 8.5 mi run

Morning showers were good for my flowers, but made for a humid run!

The other good news from my week is that while my PF acted up a bit after my 12 mile run last weekend, it felt 100% by Wednesday, so I canceled the PT appointment I had on Thursday–maybe that dry needling last week really did help.  I probably will keep my appointment this week, to make sure everything is as good as it can be for the Denver Colfax Half Marathon on Sunday.

I’m linking up with Holly and Wendy for the Weekly Wrap.

  1. Good for you on the Contes rides! I am kind of afraid to come back now. Your dog is super cute. Happy mother’s day hope you had a good one

  2. Wendy says:

Scooby is so cute and it looks like he’s settling in nicely!

I’ve never done a group ride (I’m even ashamed to admit that). I’m a little intimidated by it and I’m scared to ride in a group. I can’t decide if there would be safety in numbers or if I’d be more at risk for a crash. This whole bike crash has really got me thinking…

    • Coco says:

We’re very rarely that close together – no drafting going on, that’s for sure. I feel safer vis-a-vis traffic since we’re harder to miss, but that is another reason I don’t want to be too far behind the rest of my group!

  3. Jessie says:

Congrats on the new family member- he’s a cutie! Dogs really do help you walk more and be more active. especially in cold weather. They still need their walks! Way to go fitting it all in πŸ™‚

  4. Lucie says:

Yes, a dog is a great motivator to get you moving. I have an English Springer Spaniel and it’s thanks to him that I achieve my stepping goals, although mine is almost 13 and he’s starting to slow down. I used to run and rollerblade with my dog just so he’d be well behaved inside the house!

Enjoy Scooby! He’s a handsome pup!

  5. Somehow I totally missed that you got a new furkid! Congrats! So exciting!

I am the main dog walker. I mean seriously, I walked the dogs early Sat because it might rain, while my husband was laying on the couch. I ran yesterday morning, gave Bandit a little run (and since he’s a little dog he’s really running!), and then had errands in the afternoon. My husband never walked the dogs. He said he thought about it. Seriously?

I made him walk them after dinner. Normally I would’ve gone with him, but I wanted to link up the blog. πŸ™‚

  6. It’s been fun seeing the pics of Scooby! I’m not much into cycling, but would like to explore it some more…first I need a better bike (#excuses).

  7. Shathiso says:

I am so glad the PT is feeling a lot better! Just in time for race day. Scooby look so settled already – definitely a good dog-family match!

  8. Lesley says:

I love seeing all the dogs and walkers in my neighborhood. Makes me want a dog, but it’s hard without a yard. And I’m sure Allie would hate me for a bit.

    • Coco says:

Yes, my son’s cat is still not thrilled about the situation. And, having a fenced yard makes all the difference for those quick potty breaksa!

  9. Our dog makes us WAY more active as well. We do a 1 km loop twice a day with him but also run him from Nov – April. I even got out the other night with him for 4k but it’s starting to get way too warm for him.

    • Coco says:

Yeah, this week it’s been trickier to walk him after the heat breaks before the storms roll in. I know the 80s will be unavoidable soon enough, but right now it feels so hot!

  10. RenΓ©e says:

Congrats on your new pup! Dogs always get you a bit more active! I walk and bike everywhere and often try out new ways to get places. I love checking out the neighborhood!

I rode a lot last week! And actually have been considering doing another organised ride since you’ve been talking about it! I don’t have a race bike though but maybe next year I’ll move in that direction ????

    • Coco says:

Oh, you should try a group ride. I certainly don’t have a race bike – just a road bike with clip-in pedal, but even those are optional depending on the course. Many rides are not competitive and have lots of rest stops. πŸ˜‰

  11. Chaitali says:

The dog is so cute! It sounds like you’ve got a new routine forming with him around πŸ™‚ And yay for the PF feeling better!

  12. Ah, so exciting to get a new dog! What a cutie. Have lots of fun with him!

  13. Darlene says:

I have cats. I like dogs but they wouldn’t fit in our lifestyle.

Good luck on your upcoming half. Hope your PT stays away.

    • Coco says:

Wise words! My son wants the dog and cat to be friends. I’m just glad they can share the house peacefully. πŸ˜‰

  14. Kim G says:

I’ve loved seeing all the photos of Scooby. Glad that everything is going well and that he is getting acclimated to his new home!

I’m glad that your PF is at bay – that’s great news! Hope that you have a great race this weekend!

  15. Sandy says:

What a beautiful brindle dog! I’m a huge believer in dry needling, I could use a session. Good luck on the half marathon!

    • Coco says:

Thanks. Dry needling felt weird and uncomfortable, but didn’t really hurt. We’ll see if she wants to do it again this week.

  16. HoHo Runs says:

Dogs do make everything different…and better! My new adoptee is so big I’m afraid I can’t handle him on the leash. He loves staying outside during the day but I sadly have raccoon stories to share. πŸ™ I can’t wait to get back on my bike! I’ve been waiting until after my goal race. I hope to start training for a fall century ride. Great news about your PF! Thanks for linking.

    • Coco says:

Uh-oh on the raccoon. Scooby is definitely an indoor dog. We’ve convinced him he can go into the yard without us, but he still wants us to satnd by the door, or he will just stand by the door. :-/ Fun on the century. I’m not sure my husband’s knees are up for another full, but I’m scouting out more metrics.

  17. Jenn says:

Scooby is precious! And so big! I’ll be honest, I wish the pugs were more interested in walking, but…. they’re much more into snacking and snoozing. oh, well, I adore them anyway. Enjoy him.

I’m terrified to ride in a group. I just don’t have the confidence or the experience. One day, I’ll get there, but for now, I prefer to go it solo.

    • Coco says:

I find the group motivating, but I do hang back a bit because I am nervous to be in a pack. We usually are single file, though, with no drafting, so it’s not too bad.

LOL on the pugs. Some dogs just aren’t that excited about going out!

  18. Rachel says:

I’m so happy that Scooby is fitting right in with you guys! He sounds like an amazing dog.

  19. Farrah says:

Clearly, this means I really need to adopt a dog someday! πŸ˜› I’ve always wanted one anyway! <3

  20. Scooby is a cutie! Pablo lives down in Arlington. Perhaps they’ll see each other at the dog park sometime! πŸ˜‰

  21. Andrea says:

Aww Scoobs! He looks like he will be a great running companion. My neighbor got a golden retriever to run with and he ended up being a complete dud! Just flopped and laid down and refused to budge any time it was time to run. Lol.

  22. Congrats on the new addition to your family! Dogs add so much love and meaning to families, and I hope that you enjoy your time with your new love as much as I love spending time with my dog.

  23. steena says:

Cute pup! When I used to do FitBit it would encourage me to walk the dogs more.. I don’t have a FitBit anymore so John does most of the dog walking, ha! But dogs do help with getting more activity in, even if it’s in the yard or in the house.
