There’s A New Dog In Town!

We always knew we’d get another dog, and with my son home for the summer, we figured now is as good a time as ever. That said, when we went to the animal shelter yesterday I wasn’t expecting to come home with a new dog!

A friend who volunteers at the animal shelter has been on the lookout for a dog who might be a good fit for us, and she thought Scooby might fit the bill.

A New Dog In Town

We don’t know a lot about him, except that he’s a German Shepard mix, and about a year old. He has the same brindle coat that Tiger Lilly did, but does not have a boxer build. He’s easy going–but he keeps going, and going! He was so busy exploring the house yesterday, I could barely get any pictures of him, but he finally settled down on the sofa-ahem!

My son’s cat isn’t so sure of our new family member. His first reaction was to hiss and hide.

Scooby is happy to leave Ivy alone, so hopefully it won’t take long for Ivy to adjust. For now, we’re keeping Scoopy downstairs so Ivy can have his own space upstairs, but he seems to be getting braver–or at least more curious.

Weekly Wrap

My big news on the fitness front is a new treatment for my plantar fasciitis. When I told my physical therapist that it was flaring up after my long runs again, she suggested I try dry needling in my calves. It felt weird, and my calves felt really sore afterwards, but felt fine the next day. While my PF flared a bit after this week’s long run, it wasn’t as bad as it was after last week’s long run, so maybe it did help.

Monday: PT exercises
I kept hitting the snooze button, but made myself get up and do my main PT exercises and stretches.

Tuesday: CycleBar

Wednesday: Orange Theory Fitness

Thursday: 3 mile run + PT exercises
I think my time would have been better spent doing a full strength workout, but with day-long meetings Wednesday and Thursday I really wanted to get outside and stretch my legs.

Friday: Core Power Yoga

Saturday: 12 mile run
I drove to the Mount Vernon Trail for this long run, so I could do a simple out-and-back route. It felt hard, but I got through it.

Sunday: Two dog walks (and counting!) + 43 mi bike ride

First ride in my Official Farm To Fork Fondo Ambassador Jersey
and I met a woman doing the Shenandoah ride!

I don’t feel very confident about the Colfax Denver Half Marathon in two weeks. I know I’ll finish, but based on how hard these 12 milers have been, it could be ugly. Looking back at last year’s training for the NYC Half, I see my long runs maxed out at 12 miles then too, but I did three of them. On the other hand, I’ve already done three 10 mile races this year, while I only had done one before the NYC Half. So, maybe my training has been similar–I just need to get my head in the game!

I’m linking up with Holly and Wendy for the Weekly Wrap.

Do you have a dog and cat that get along?

I’m so sorry to hear that you are still struggling with PF. It is THE WORST! Really, the only thing that worked for me was to not run and take all my runs to the pool. I know that’s not what you want to hear, but it is what it is. I hope it never comes back again. Glad you have your bike to keep you cross training.

Love Scooby! He’s so cute! Congrats!

Thanks. I may cut way back on running again after this half. Desperate times call for desperate measures!

  2. Oh how fun a new addition to the family. My uncle had a beagle named Scooby! Hopefully Ivy will warm up to him soon enough.

  3. Interested in hearing more about the dry needling. Hope it helps! Your new doggie is super cute

  4. I have heard dry needling is very painful, but effective. Not sure I could handle that (and I usually have a high pain tolerance). I can’t remember if I’ve asked you this before, but have you tried taping your arches (and, sometimes, your heels also) before a long run? I also have worn a PF compression “mini” sleeve…to bed and also while running. Not every thing works for every runner, obviously, but those were a couple that worked for me. They didn’t necessarily solve the problem, but definitely made it much more manageable. Hope the dry needling works for you!!

Hmm. Dry needling wasn’t really worse than Graston. It felt like someone was flicking my skin. My PF doesn’t flare up during my long runs so I haven’t thought about taping. I guess it still might help ….

The fam is talking about getting a new dog. My son especially wants a new one to play with, but we’re looking for a puppy so it can grow with him. Scooby looks adorable though. Good luck with your training.

Scooby looks like a lot of fun and I love how Ivy is eyeing him from the top of the stairs! LOL. We used to have a cat Kimmy who would swat each new dog we got as part of some “initiation ritual”. I guess it was his way of laying down the law of the land. He lived until he was 18. Sorry that your PT is still not 100%. Best of luck with your training – you are almost there.

So fun that you got a new dog. Scooby looks like he will be a lot of fun. Hopefully the cat will come downstairs to play with him soon.

I hope that the new plantar fasciitis treatment gives you some relief. I’ve never done dry needling but I have a few friends that have tried it and really liked it.

  8. Lesley says:

It really seems like tight calves cause a lot of issues. When I do dry needling for my ITBS, I always have needles in my calves to loosen up the knots in there. There’s one particular spot almost right under the ITBS pain spot.

  9. Chaitali says:

The dog is so cute! I love that photo of the cat hanging out upstairs, it looks like she’s contemplating how to drop things to hit people 🙂 Interesting about the dry needling. I was at the PT on Friday and she said that she thought dry needling is something I should think about as well, for my calf and achilles.

  10. Love Scooby! Will he be running with you? My cat doesn’t like either of my dogs. She’s afraid of the Sadie, and Luna (the pup) is afraid of her.
I never heard of dry needling but I hope it continues to help. PF can be such a pain. (no pun intended, hehehe)

  11. HoHo Runs says:

I think your 10 milers will set you up nice for your half marathon. Don’t sweat it. It’s odd that dry needling the calf would help PF. But, I’d be game for giving anything a try. Scooby is adorable. And, I love that his name is Scooby! Thanks for linking!

  12. Aww Scooby is so cute! Interesting about the dry needling in your calf for your PF. How often do you have to do it? Hope it helps!

  13. Sara says:

OMG! Such a cute dog. Ivy looks pretty suspicious of him lol.
Hopefully the dry needling does the trick! I’ve never had that done but I know a few friends that deal with PF on a regular basis. You’ll have to let me know how it goes!

  14. Marcia says:

Boo to the PF. I hope the dry needling does the trick for you. Scooby is a cutie! What a great addition to the family!

  15. Cari says:

    Scooby is so cute!
If you decide to go with arch taping, Running With No Regrets has had some great posts on her PF flares. Sadly oh so common. What a run view!
