Another Flight, Another Hike

This week I made it through the last of my summer business trips. Traveling always disrupts my schedule, but my overnight trip to California was a doozy! It wasn’t San Fransisco cool when I got home, but it was cool enough for a solid hike this weekend.

One of the many creek crossings on the Bull Run Occoquan Trail.

Another Flight

When I was making plans to visit a client in San Jose I wanted to combine that trip with my trip to San Diego, but schedules did not align. So, a week after getting home from Florida, I was back at the airport for another cross-country flight.

Since I had an early flight home, I opted to stay near the airport and loved the view from the very aptly named Marriott Waterfront Airport hotel.

View from my room: the SFO tarmac across the water

I stopped at the hotel to drop off my suitcase before heading to my meeting, and was able to check-in early, which was nice. From there, it was a 45 min Uber to my client meeting. The meeting was very productive, but when it wrapped up after 2 hours I couldn’t help but do the math on how much time I spent in transit versus how much time I needed to be there. 🤔 From there, I took another 45 min Uber to our Palo Alto office where I met a few colleagues who joined me for dinner. I was back at my hotel by 7:30 local time. I tried to enjoy the view from the hotel lounge, but was so tired I went to bed at 8:30!

I had set one alarm for 4 am in case I wanted to hit up the hotel gym before heading to the airport. After crashing so early, I was ready to get up and did a sold strength workout (a 20 min full body class and a 10 min upper body class).

Another hotel missing 15 lbs weights!

I wasn’t sure of the TSA situation at SFO, so I took the 6 am shuttle ahead of my 8 am flight. The line was very short and I was at my gate by 6:30. I guess I could have slept later or done a longer workout, but you never know these days!

Another Hike

Back at home, the weather was back to “normal” for D.C. in July —hot and humid. Some storms came through Friday night that made Saturday a pretty good day for a hike. We went back to Fountainhead Regional Park, and did an out-and-back on the Bull Run Occoquan trail—covering about 8.25 miles in three hours.

It was a shady trail with lots of ups and downs and creek crossings.

I remembered to coat myself with Off! so I wasn’t eaten up by mosquitoes.

Because of the conditions after the rain, the trail was closed to mountain bikers, but we were amused by the warning signs.

It was a really pretty trail!

Weekly Run Down

The rest of my week I was mostly playing chicken with my hip—trying to figure out what I can do without irritating it too much, and avoiding back-to-back cycling days.

After over-doing it a bit with my July 4th workouts, I took it easier on Sunday.

Monday I took too long to get going and had to cut my workout time short—Jess Sims’ Flash 15 classes are perfect for days like that. Hannah’s 20 min beginner ride was not necessarily easy, but it was good.

Back home Thursday I ran gently for a few of the “running” intervals of Olivia’s walk + run class, but it didn’t take many for my hip to complain. 😕

Friday I took it easy with two barre classes and an extra 15 min treadmill walk.

Luckily my hip was not bothered by our hike.

I have a PT appointment on Tuesday—I’m interested to see what they say and what exercises they have me do.

A huge thank you to Deborah and Kim for hosting the Weekly Run Down link up.

Do you use bug spray when you spend time outside?

I’m exhausted just reading about your travels! Idk how you do it. I bet it feels good to be home!!

I just commented on bug spray on your reply to my post! On my bug infested trails, I use Ben’s Adventure Spray–there’s a sweat-proof version, and I swear by it! I only get bitten if I miss a spot or through my socks, which happened last week.

Nice job this week, even with everything going on! Hopefully next week is a little less eventful. I use bug spray but usually only remember to put it on at night. I get eaten alive by mosquitoes in the summer, especially at night. We went to an outdoor concert last night and you bet i brought bug spray!
