Cautiously Optimistic

Despite a stressful work week complicated by a sore throat and cough with a few first world problems thrown in, my theme for this week is cautiously optimistic.  I am in good shape with regard to that looming work deadline, my voice is almost back to normal, and my plantar fascia does not hurt at all!

Cautiously Optimistic
It’s the thought that my plantar fasciitis might really be healed that has me cautiously optimistic. I can’t help but be happy when my foot doesn’t ache, but I am wary of doing too much too soon–or slacking off from my PT exercises too soon.

Cautiously Optimistic Weekly Wrap

Between recovering from the Reston Ten Miler (did you see my recap?), fighting off that virus, and working extra long hours, I took it easy with my workouts this week. As much as I wanted to go to my fitness classes, I knew my body needed the extra 45 min of sleep I could give it if I worked out at home.

I also think I opted for more strength workouts because I knew they would not aggravate my PF. Now that I seem to be able to run pain-free, I’m almost afraid to push my luck.

Monday: Strength workout at home, focusing on my PT exercises

I did push-ups off the steps to make them more interesting.

Tuesday: 4.5 mile run + PT
I put my recovery to the test and added an extra hill to the end of my neighborhood loop, knowing I could get any extra kinks worked out in my PT appointment.

Oh, 6 am sunrise, how I will miss you this week!

Wednesday: PT exercises at home

I did the easy stretches and exercises in my bedroom.

Thursday: Another strength workout at home.

Friday: Treadmill workout + PT stretches
I did an OTF-inspired workout with both speed and incline intervals.

I’m using the timer on my phone
to make sure I hold my stretches for 45 sec.

Saturday: 26 mile Computrainer ride of the Reston Tri course.
A local bike shop, Pro Bike FC, invited members of the multisport subgroup of my Moms Run This Town group to do a Computrainer ride of a local tri course.

Do you recognize Deborah?

Four of us rode side-by-side on our bikes as we tackled the 2000 ft elevation change automated by the Computrainers. It was a lot of fun doing it together–we chatted and encouraged each other–but it would have been hard to stick it out on my own.

The technology was really cool but the course was really hard!

Sunday: 6 mile run
I really wanted to get a run in this weekend, so I got out for a rare mid-day run after going to church and the grocery store. The weather was gorgeous but my legs were tired from Saturday’s ride.

This flower is ready to spring forward.

I’m linking up with Holly and Wendy for the Weekly Wrap

I’m also participating in the Cherry Blossom Training Link Up that Heather is hosting.

Have you done a simulated ride on a smart trainer?

    Do I see daffodils?

    Hope you are feeling better?

Still you had a solid week of training.

    • Coco says:

Yes, our weather had been so crazy, the flower are out even though it’s near freezing at night. I seem to be 80% better. πŸ™‚

  2. Hope you keep feeling better! I’m also sad about the dark mornings again!

  3. Wendy says:

That computrainer is no joke! I’ve done that in the past and it was way harder than any spin class. Which tells me that it is super effective. Will you go back?

    Have a great week!

  4. Oh I hope you’re feeling better. How nice to see daffodils – I’m so ready for spring to finally come!

  5. Dale Gardner says:

    Sounds like a great week!

  6. Sounds like a fun ride for being indoors, yet challenging. Spring can not get here quick enough. I am so happy to get out of this cold weather for a racecation this weekend.

  7. So glad that your PF is feeling better! I still worry mine will come back one day. Great to see you at the class we need to do it again

  8. I’m gonna miss those 6:00 pre-sunrise mornings, too! I guess in another four weeks (??), some of the light will be starting to return. I’m glad to hear the foot is feeling better!! I do push-ups on the stairway occasionally…it’s way easier to “kiss the floor” πŸ˜‰

  9. Kimberly G says:

That Computrainer class sounds like it was hard, but also a really great workout! It’s always nice to take classes with friends that will encourage you along the way πŸ™‚
So sorry that you had a rough week between work and not feeling well πŸ™ I think that you handled all your workouts like a champ despite those two things!

  10. Marcia says:

How fun to do that ride with a group! Did you have music? Sounds like a stressful week. You were wise to ease up on workouts when you weren’t feeling 100%. Wow flowers! Ours are just barely, barely sticking above the soil at this point. It was a dark morning. πŸ™

  11. Glad the PF pain has gone away and that the PT exercises have helped! I may need to follow your routine soon…my left foot isn’t happy with me!

I will head over to check out your Reston 10 Miler recap!

  12. Hope you feel better! I take it down when I”m not feeling great either. The computrainer seems neat – I’ve never ridden one, but thats some definite elevation!

  13. Chaitali says:

Glad to hear that you’re feeling better! That is good news about the PF. The weather Sunday really was beautiful, I’m glad you were able to take advantage of it πŸ™‚

  14. Lesley says:

I love daffodils. Tulips and daffodils are always spring flowers, and it’s great to see them. I do miss the blue bonnets from Texas because that was always my sure sign of spring.

  15. Shathiso says:

Looks like spring is finally headed your way! Glad the PF drama seems to be settling down but I understand why you want to be a bit careful. Love that you did all those strength workouts! A good week all round x

  16. That’s great news that your foot feels better!

I’m so jelly of that daffodil. It’ll be a while before we see any bulbs. OTOH, we won’t swelter as much in the summer. Hopefully!

  17. Sometimes when you’re pressed for time and working long hours, sleep is so crucial. It’s great you didn’t just sit but you’ve done excellent strength workouts, Coco. Excellent week! πŸ™‚

  18. HoHo Runs says:

The Computrainer ride sounds like fun! I would probably whine until I got a less challenging course though. πŸ˜‰ That’s great news about your PF. I know what you mean about being afraid to push your luck. After numerous injuries over the past couple of years, I struggle with feeling good and wanting to run but being afraid to do so. I don’t want to run in the dark before work. Why do we have to change the time? Thanks for linking.

  19. If I did a simulated ride, I would want it to pass by a barbecue joint. I’d want that to happen during an especially trying time, so that the aroma from the kitchen could keep me going!

Inspired by your post … it’s moving me to buy that fitbit at work if it’s still there on the clearance rack!

  20. Toni says:

Glad your PF is better. Keep on doing the rehab while starting to run and hopefully you will be fine. PF can be a real pain in the butt. Looks like SPring is headed your way!

  21. Jenn says:

Oh, I”m so glad you’re feeling better and that the PF is giving you a break. PF is truly awful and I don’t envy your struggle with it at all.

I’ve never done a simulated ride on a smart bike. I think it would be so fun and far more motivating than just a regular ride.

  22. Teresa says:

While I don’t like the dark mornings the time change brings, I do love, love, love the longer daylight hours …so I’m good with DST!

So glad to hear you PF is finally quiet …don’t blame you one bit for being cautious though. That is one injury that will literally stop a runner in their tracks!

I think I’d love to try one of those computrainer rides ..sounds hard as heck but fun! Did you all finish the course at the same time or riding at different speeds? Did the computer control your speed or just record it? I’m intrigued.

  23. I’ve never tried a simulated ride on a trainer! Most of the time I just zone out to something on Netflix when I’m riding solo at home or the gym, but the downside to that is I know I don’t push myself as much

  24. Looks like you had a great week of workouts! I’ve not tried a class like that and we don’t have spinning classes in this small town area. I would love to try it!

  25. Kudos to you for listening to your body and giving it the extra rest that you clearly needed. It’s so hard to balance the strong desire to workout with the need to take things easy in order to get over an illness. I too was there last week and wound up only working out on two days because of how much my body screamed at me in desperate need of the rest. Working out will be there for us when we’re feelig 100% again.
