Grateful Black Friday Runfessions

Happy Black Friday! It’s a special day when I share my grateful runfessions. Join me over at  Marcia’s Healthy Slice where we can all cleanse our souls soles and get a fresh start for December.

Grateful Black Friday Runfessions

I runfess that I am not grateful that my hamstring continues to nag, but I am grateful for the professionals willing to apply their skills to help me recover. I really like my PT—and her willingness to let me try to recover my way (with some running in the mix)—and my podiatrist who has agreed to see me about possibly using shockwave on my hamstring.

Speaking of my hamstring, I runfess I am almost at the point of throwing in the towel and benching myself. My PT suggested I consider taking a few weeks off to really let my hamstring calm down, and I know she’s not wrong. If the shockwave therapy doesn’t work out, I may hide my running shoes for a while. I runfess I am writing this after going for my Thanksgiving run, so I know that would be easier said than (not) done ….

I gratefully runfess, that I was really happy when I opened my Peloton app on Thanksgiving morning and saw this new outdoor run. Matty and Olivia have an ongoing big brother-big sister dynamic that they played up with friendly chatter. I really am grateful for all the Peloton instructors and appreciate the effort and creativity they put into keeping me motivated day in and day out. I’m also grateful Peloton offers so many modalities. If I do bench myself, I can still take cycling, strength, yoga, and stretching classes.

I runfess it took me a few weeks to realize my office gym was stocking the showers with Aveeno products. At first I thought someone had left theirs behind, and I runfess I still used a dollop of the body wash when my bottle was empty. When I saw the same products in a different shower, I realized they were stocking them. Between the amazing water pressure and big fluffy towels, I runfess I almost prefer showering there.

I runfess I have very little interest in Black Friday shopping. I just bought new running shoes, and with not running that much, I don’t think I’ll try to make the early bird 30% deals at my local running store. I also runfess I did recently stock up on the SkirtSports going-out-of-business sale, the Athleta early Black Friday sale (with birthday bonus points), and a Peloton apparel sale. I really need to shop for clothes for the office, but I runfess I find that much less fun.

I gratefully runfess that each of you motivates and inspires me more than you will ever know, and I am very thankful this fitness blogging thing brought us together. Whether I’ve met you in person or not, I count you as a friend.

Thanks to Kim for putting this collage together!

Do you have any grateful runfessions?

I think your office gym shower is nicer than my shower at home! I would want to shower there all the time.
Winter might be the time to take a short running break. The shockwave could work, but if not, it’s really not fun to continue to run with nagging pain (I know this very well.)
I’m also incredibly grateful for our community of bloggers! Someone was talking the other day about “how to deal with mean comments” but I don’t think I’ve EVER gotten a mean comment! Everyone is always so helpful and supportive. Definitely something to be thankful for!
I hope you had a great Thanksgiving.

As someone who had to take 5 weeks off of running to heal, it is not the end of the world when you can do cycling and strength. Definitely worth a shot to try the shock wave therapy.
I got some Peloton apparel for friends and one for me as well. Then, I bought more regular people clothes as I figured I have so much athletic wear. Very thankful for all of you in my running tribe as well. Happy Thanksgiving

That is a nice shower. I’ve never even checked out the one at the Y since I work from home on the days I go there.

I’m happy that you ran yesterday and sad that you may have to take time off. But hopefully it will heal things. Is your podiatrist a runner?

I’m grateful that I can run (even if it’s slower everyday) and for my running friends both in person ones and virtual ones.

Hope at some time our NYC work trips overlap.

I don’t think he’s a runner, but he understands running is important to me.

It would be great to cross paths with you in NYC or elsewhere!

  4. Marcia says:

That’s so nice they are outfitting the showers for you! Sorry the hamstring is still not 100% but yes, a support team you like is very valuable. Not too much on the BF shopping front here either…except a new pair of trail shoes…

  5. Are shockwave therapy treatments similar to dry needling? My PT did some dry needling on my “problem areas” last year and they seemed to make a difference (along with all the other PT work we did). My hammy has been feeling a bit grumpy lately…it doesn’t hurt at all when I’m running or cycling, but I can feel something going on if I twist my leg certain ways. So, I’m back to the Barre for awhile 😉

    • Coco says:

I think it’s different — definitely more painful in the moment. The idea is to traumatize the area at a controlled level to trigger your body (cells) to send healing factors to the area.

  6. Catrina says:

I know it’s the hardest thing to do but it might be a good idea to hide your running shoes for a bit.
You have so many great other options, you’ll manage to keep a great level of fitness during your bench time. How long would you take off for?

Fluffy towels and free shower stuff? That’s the best!!

    • Coco says:

How long is a hard question. At least two weeks, because I’ve done one before and it hasn’t been enough. Probably should do four. 🙁

  7. I am so sorry that you’re still grappling with your hamstring. Big hugs, I know this isn’t easy on you and hope that it can really heal up sooner.

I wasn’t even going to look at Athleta, but then there were the $69 Rainier tights. I bought one and one top and that was that. I did also buy a few more SS items — I’d been waiting, but the one thing I really wanted was going like hotcakes. We’ll see if I actually get it.

  8. Jenn says:

Love to you. I’m not grateful for your hamstring woes, either. We need you back with the running!

I didn’t care much for BF either. I got some new Adrenalines for $89.95, as well as a hockey jersey for my husband, but that’s about it.

  9. Cari says:

So I runfess I just reordered what I bought last week at Athleta because it’s cheaper. I feel bad, but also they do that to themselves so it’s not (all) my fault. My BF shopping has otherwise been minimal, although it did involve a trial of a new pair of sneaks since the Adrenaline went back. We will see.
    Boo on hammy.

    • Coco says:

I think your return/purchase is fine. Retailers set themselves up for that. Talbots had 40% off yesterday and a lot of people were there doing returns and re-buys.
