Hiding From The Heat Wave

This week was all about hiding from the heat wave. How hot was it in D.C.? Pacer’s Twilighter 5K was canceled, even though it’s “only” a 5K and had an 8:30 pm start. It stayed so hot Friday and Saturdays night, I didn’t take Scooby for an after-dinner walk.Β  Even when I let him out in the back yard he looked miserable–it was still in the 90s at 9 pm!.

Hiding From The Heat Wave

It’s hot, ya’ll.

Hiding From The Heat Wave

The week started warm, and just got warmer. I did manage one outdoor run on Tuesday, and actually caught a breeze along the Potomac River. After walking Scooby Thursday morning I couldn’t stand the thought of hot yoga, so I decided to do a strength workout in my office gym. That turned out to be a costly decision, because I left my AirPods on a towel, and then scooped it up and tossed it into the laundry bin without realizing what I’d done–until two days later. πŸ™

$15 cheaper, but out of stock until July 24

After discovering they were gone and remembering what I’d done, my first thought was to run right out and get a new set, but when I saw a lower price on Amazon, I spent a few hours convincing myself that saving $15 was worth waiting a week to replace them.Β  It’s amazing how quickly a product can become such an essential part of my daily routine.

I also spent a lot of time debating what would have been my first 10K trail race.

Thanks to everyone who weighed in. I think Judy‘s comment sealed my decision not to sign up. Even if it wasn’t miserable, it wasn’t likely to be fun. The event wasn’t canceled, but they did offer a rolling start starting at 5:30 am (i.e., just show up and run). If I had already signed up or trained for it, I probably would have done it, but I couldn’t convince myself to sign up when so many other events were being canceled.

Since I didn’t go for a bike ride on Saturday, I was able to go to the farmer’s market, or as I think of it, the farmer$ market. I like to support local farmers, but I can’t bring myself to pay $10 for a watermelon or $3.49/lb for peaches and tomatoes–especially when “local” peaches are 69Β’/lb at the grocery store.

sunflowerI did splurge on a $9 bouquet of flowers–
they will make me smile all week.

Weekly Run Down

Here’s the run down of the workouts I managed to do while hiding from the heat wave. Thanks to Deborah and Kim for the link up –join in for motivation and encouragement!

Monday: Strength workout at home.

Tuesday: 5 mile Tidal Basin run
Since I only did one outdoor workout this weekend, I’ll share two pictures of my run around the Tidal Basin.

Tidal Basin
The photos look like they were taken hours apart,
but it was really only about 5 minutes.

Tidal Basin

Wednesday: Cyclebar + post-ride planking
I’m trying to make a habit out spending 5-10 minutes after class to do some stretching and planking.

Post Cycle Bar Planking

Thursday: Strength workout at my office gym
My calves have been feeling really tight, so I spent some time on this torturous foam roller.

Friday: Orange Theory Fitness
I can’t even remember the treadmill workout, but I remember I was dying when Brandon urged us on with this reminder:

Orange Theory Fitness

Saturday: Orange Theory Fitness
Even before two of the three Conte’s rides were canceled, I had signed up for Orange Theory Fitness, knowing I did not want to ride in suffocating conditions.

OTF

While I don’t take his classes often, I really like John’s coaching style, although I’m not sure I agree burpees count as a “recovery” exercise.

Sunday: Cyclebar
When I was still debating the trail race, I signed up for a Sunday morning Cyclebar class because they fill up fast. Even under the air conditioning I was dripping buckets.

cyclebarEven Prisma can’t hide my overheated red face!

Did you buy anything on Amazon Prime Day(s)?

  1. I have to actually keep an eye on the damn dogs to make sure they don’t stay out too long in the heat. Dumb dogs! And get out early to walk them — it never cools down enough at night to walk them.

There will be another trail race! Hopefully a much cooler one! There was a 5 mile one I initially wanted to do today, but that was just way back when when I was eyeing things, before I knew what the weather would be. Glad I had other things to do today. πŸ™‚

Still a nice week of workouts!

    • Coco says:

Thanks. It was really my weekend workouts impacted the most. Scooby does a few laps in the yard and then comes panting to the door, ready to surrender!

      • Seriously, my dogs will lay out there when it’s brutally hot for far too long if I let them, then come in & lay like dead things. I have to keep an eye on them. They’re too old for that s#*t!

  2. Steena says:

That’s really cool that they offered the rolling start option to racers! The heat was challenging for all. Our heat was random, it was unbearable, and then it dropped 30 degrees and actually felt cold.

    • Coco says:

Since the whole route was in a park, I guess they could do that (no road closure logistics). I would love a 30 degree drop. Maybe by Tuesday we’ll be back in the 80s.

  3. deborahbrooks14 says:

Smart choice not to do a race this weekend. It really is dangerous to be out in that heat for long. So glad I missed the worst 2 days!

  4. Kim at Running on the Fly says:

It’s crazy how many races/outdoor events got cancelled this weekend. The extreme temps were just nutzo. I could even feel sweat instantly running down my back within a few steps outside with Max in the backyard. I think all your Prisma pics are great! I go through phases with Prisma… I haven’t been there much lately. I think they’ve been changing some of their filters (?). Anyways, another solid week for you!!

  5. This was not a good weekend for racing – glad you took a pass on that trail race. No point in suffering through it.

And I agree, burpees are not a recovery exercise!

  6. kookyrunner says:

You made the right decision to not race this weekend. I am so glad that this heatwave is over – that was pretty brutal.

Those OTF classes sounded hard! And I agree with you, burpees are not part of recovery lol

  7. Organic Runner Mom says:

Good job getting in the stretching and planking. I still need to get better at that. We had insane heat here in NH too. The name of the game this weekend was swimming and staying cool. Bummer about your air pods. I am debating getting a pair as I have never had them before and they sound great!

  8. Darlene says:

Ha Ha. I bought myself flowers too. They make me smile.

It was hot here too but no races were cancelled. I guess better safe than sorry. Today and tomorrow we have rain. then back to normal summer temps.

  9. RenΓ©e says:

oh bummer about the air pods πŸ™ I lost the only pair of headphones that actually stayed in my ears a couple years ago and never replaced them. I thought I would get new ones and then I was bombarded with everyone and their Trekz that I decided to be stubborn and try to find something else that not *everyone* else has… and now I still have none and kind of need them for my long runs! I think I may stop being stubborn soon.

I’m not even sure amazon prime here had a day so I’d have to answer your question as “no” πŸ™‚

you got a solid week in, even with it being the sun surface temperature – well done!

  10. Chaitali says:

Um yeah… burpees definitely don’t say recovery to me! There was an 8k in Rockville that was cancelled Saturday evening too. I think they made the right choice. It was just so oppressive out there with the heat and humidity. I think you made the right choice on that trail race.

  11. Wendy says:

It was so weird that RnR Chicago canceled the 5k on Saturday, but the race I ran pressed on–all 3 distances were a go! I think everyone knows the risks of running in the heat (at least I hope so!) and I just wonder what was behind that cancelation.

Seems like everyone has those air pods!

  12. Laetitia says:

Smart to take most of your workouts indoor this week (and to skip that trail race!). It *was* disgusting here…

  13. RnR Chicago cancelled the 5k on Saturday. I thought it was weird since I didn’t think it was that hot in the morning. It did get pretty bad later on in the day. I have the same airpods and love them too.

On Amazon Prime Days I bought an Echo Dot for my classroom. Now they’re buy two for $50 so I might get two more to give as a gift.

  14. runswithpugs says:

I didn’t buy anything during Prime days. I had my eye on a few things, but nothing really spoke to em.

I can’t believe they were canceling events! I guess we are just so used to the high temperatures. In all my years of running, the only time an event has actually been canceled was due to a hurricane (and even then, it was just postponed a week), not for the heat itself. I think you made a good choice though.

I hope things cool down and Scooby is able to get some miles soon!

    • Coco says:

There definitely is a different tolerance for the heat. We also had really high humidity/dew point, so it just felt hard to breathe. A woman died from heat exhaustion hiking the Billy Goat trail on Saturday afternoon so it was no joke. πŸ™

  15. Melissa says:

Despite my best efforts, we did do some shopping on prime day. I picked up some kids books, meat thermometers, and another echo dot. Hope you are able to beat the heat this week!

  16. Cari says:

How was I not following your FB page? Remedied now.
I agree with you/Judy and that was more or less the calculus I did for the treadmill long run vs already miserable as hell an hour before sunrise

  17. angela@marathonsandmotivation.com says:

Oh, I hear you! It was over 90 degrees 2 days in a row here, so I did my workouts inside in the AC πŸ™‚

  18. Marcia says:

I got the Prime Day Air Pods as well.! Can’t wait to try them out. It was blazing hot in Chicago too but so much cooler when I returned from Atlanta. Feels fabulous!

  19. therightfits says:

Wow- it was REALLY hot there! EEks! Poor Scooby! Sorry to hear about the air pods!
