Holiday, Rest Day, Snow Day — Oh My!

After writing about learning to stand on my head, this week’s workouts hardly seem worth writing about. But, my week did include a few adventures you may be interested in, including a day trip to Philly for work, an injury-induced rest day, and a snow day.

I appreciate the directional arrows on this Amtrak sign–
I’m always afraid of getting on the wrong train.

Please make plans to join the March Ultimate Coffee Date next weekend– Deborah and I will open the (link-up) doors on Friday (March 1), and keep the coffee brewing all weekend.

Holiday, Rest Day, Snow Day

Monday: The Holiday
The week started off with the President’s Day holiday. I sacrificed my day off to meet up with an Australian client who was in the U.S. for a few days for meetings in Philadelphia. Through the magic of the Amtrak Acela train, I could have breakfast at home, lunch in Philadelphia, and be back home for dinner. Thanks to Janelle for suggesting a nice place for lunch. Apparently many of the nice restaurants in Philly are only open for dinner.

I had hoped to get in a longish run before heading to the train station, but before we had gone a full block, Scooby spotted a cat he had to chase after, catching me off guard, and causing me to hurt my foot/ankle.  🙁  I limped home and headed to the basement for an upper body strength workout.

Tuesday: The Rest Day
My foot was not happy with all the walking I did on Monday (through the train station and  ~ 1/2 mile to/from the restaurant), so I took a full rest day.

Wednesday: The Snow Day
Wednesday we had an odd snow day, with snow starting at 6 am and ending mid-afternoon as temperatures reached the upper 30s. My office was closed, so I stayed inside and did another upper body strength workout and as many of my PT exercises as my foot would let me. While I did legitimately work at home, I made time for my favorite snow day activity: baking cookies.

Thursday: CycleBar
By Wednesday night I was going stir crazy. I knew my foot wasn’t ready for yoga–even the basic poses would require me to put weight on it–but I thought indoor cycling might be OK. I decided to let the fates decide–if there was still room in Francina’s class when I woke up on Thursday, I would go.  There was, and I did.

Plus, who could a playlist based on Madonna and Prince?

My foot was not at all bothered by seated riding, but didn’t like it when I stood up–you can see in the RPM graph where I tried. It felt great to get my heart rate up and get in a sweaty workout.

Friday: Orange Theory Fitness
After Thursday’s experience at indoor cycling, I probably was crazy to even try Orange Theory, but I talked myself into it knowing that at most 14 min of the workout would involve the treadmill.

It turned out to be a tornado workout–4 minutes at each station three times–so my foot only had to deal with running 4 minutes at a time. I’m not going to lie–it was uncomfortable, but I pushed through because there wasn’t any sharp pain. The ways I justify these things!

Saturday: 1 mile walk + 1 mile run + 1 mile walk
Since my foot didn’t hurt at all walking with an Ace ankle brace, I decided to try to go for a run after walking Scooby. That didn’t go very well, so I called it quits and did another strength workout. I also took Scooby for a second walk later in the day.

Sunday: Cyclebar
I was tempted to cancel my Cyclebar reservation for an outdoor ride, but I wasn’t sure the rain really would stop mid-morning, or that the bike path would be dry enough to ride safely, or that my foot could handle unclipping quickly if I had to, so I stuck to my original plan and rode inside.

I stayed seated most of the time, but my foot didn’t seem to mind the few times I joined in the standing rides. Hopefully it’s on the mend–I have my first 10 miler of 2019 on the calendar for next weekend!

And that’s a wrap!

I’m joining Holly and Wendy for the final Weekly Wrap (sniff!)

What’s your favorite snow day ritual?

  1. Oh, I hope your foot is all healed up by your race next weekend! It looks as though it’s on the mend (or sounds like it, whatever). That is the beauty of small dogs — they just aren’t dragging me anywhere. They’re actually pretty good most of the time, really, aside from barking/growling which is what they do at cats outside.

    • Coco says:

Yes, I told my husband this needs to be our last big dog. Scooby is gentle but loses his mind over squirrels – and cats apparently.

      • I know some little dogs can really pull, too. Do you use a harness where the leash attaches in front? I can’t remember. We do use one of those for Bandit — he’s not going to pull me anywhere, and he’s come a long way, but he does tend to pull — I think it has something to do with Lola, actually , we walk them on a double leash).

We like little dogs for a variety of reasons. 🙂

  2. Wendy says:

Ugh! When I was dealing with that neverending bout of PF, I did indoor cycling but no standing in the pedals. I just dialed up the resistance for that portion. I hope you’re back to form soon.

    • Coco says:

Yep, that’s why my RPMs dip so low — I was cranking up the resistance. Hopefully that will pay off whenever I do ride outside.

  3. Rabbit Food Runner says:

I love spending snow days in the kitchen. When I taught elementary school, that’s how I spent the handful of snow days we had. I hope your foot feels better soon!

  4. kookyrunner says:

I’ve never taken the Acela train (just the regular Amtrak train), but love that they have that as an option. IT’s nice to be able to get somewhere super quick!

It seems like your foot is on the mend! I hope that it continues to heal and feel better.

    • Coco says:

Knock on wood, my foot it feeling better today. I guess I’m spoiled and always take the Acela for work. It gets me to NYC in under 4 hours, which is fantastic. Philly was only an hour an a half — 1/2 the time of driving.

  5. Darlene says:

    Hope your ankle is ok.

    Injuries suck.

At least you were still active by biking.

  6. therightfits says:

It looks like you are a talented baker- great way to spend a snow day! I hope your injury is on the mend. Sounds like a frustrating one 🙁

  7. deborahbrooks14 says:

I really hope your ankle is ok! How frustrating! I would just lay off it completely until next weekend

  8. Ouch Ouch Ouch!!! That has to be frustrating! Bad Scooby LOL Your trip tp Philly sound fast and furious, but quite fun!

  9. Marcia says:

Oh wow sorry your foot is still bothering you. You did a great job of staying active and working around it though. I kind of love snow days, although we’ve had more than our share here this winter. Bring on spring!

  10. Sounds like you’re on the mend! You did great staying active despite your foot. Hopefully you’ll be in good form for your race!

  11. debolton says:

Oh no! Not an ankle injury! I hope you are back to full strength soon. I love going into Philly for good eats. Always something yummy to find!

  12. runswithpugs says:

Oh, your poor foot! Scooby knows that cats are tempting!

Where do you go from standing on your head??? That’s a huge accomplishment, but your workouts are always so impressive, that it’s great to read what you’re up to.

Take it easy with that foot and I hope it’s all healed up soon.

We don’t have snow days, here, so I remember getting up really early, watching the snow fall, and then my mom making me hot chocolate and cream of wheat back in the days when I lived in NJ. Now we just have hurricane days, which are a lot less fun. We have to board up the house, hope the power stays on and the roof stays put and sleep on air mattresses downstairs, living on non perishables. Not my favorite time of year.

  13. If it’s snowy out where I live, theres a good chance I’ll be hanging inside unless I have a lot of snow and then we like to go sledding. But I’m over snow now.

  14. Organic Runner Mom says:

Yummy cookies! So very sorry about the injury! Hopefully you recover quickly!

  15. We’ve had a lot of snow days this winter – 12 snow days for my kids’ school!!!! Hope you foot is feeling better soon!

  16. Liz Dexter says:

Oh your poor foot, what a nightmare. I know what you mean though – an urgggh pain, OK, an ARGH! NO! pain not so OK! Hope you continue to improve.

  17. Hopefully you have nothing major going on. It does sound like it’s getting better. I hope it continues in that direction!

  18. Cari says:

Glad your foot is responding quickly.
And yay Acela magic. 21st century time travel!
Snow days and baking are a wonderfully evil combo

  19. Renée says:

I’m so sorry you have a scooby related injury!! I really truly hope it’s better for your 10 miler. you did the right thing by taking it fairly easy / keeping an eye (feel) out for it.

I was in Philadelphia a couple of years ago for exactly one day so also really grateful for the signs they have there. I really wish I could spend more time there and get to DC at some point. So many places to go!!

    • Coco says:

Well, if you do ever get to DC, you have to let me know! It looks like I’ll be sitting this race out but I’m trying not to dwell on it.

  20. angela@marathonsandmotivation.com says:

I’m sorry to read about your foot, but glad to hear it seems to be improving!! Baking cookies on a snow day is my favorite too! 🙂

  21. Chaitali says:

That seems like good news that your foot felt ok during Sunday’s cycle bar class 🙂 Hopefully that holds up.

  22. I hope your foot will be healed completely so you can run again soon. Baking cookies used to be a favorite snow day activity, but I haven’t done that since our sons were in school… Hope you’re having a good week!

  23. Farrah says:

Baking cookies definitely sounds like a great snow day activity! I need to do that more (I have a bunch of flour I need to use up!). I hope your ankle is better now!! <3
