Ready To Hibernate

I know temperatures in the teens won’t earn me much sympathy this week, but I lost all motivation to bundle up and go outside. I was much happier curling up with Scooby in front of the fireplace ….

ready to hibernate

Speaking of Scooby, I even skimped on his walks this week. I draw the line at the upper teens. I think my husband took him out when it was a bit colder than that, but both of us opted out the morning it was 9°F.

Ready To Hibernate

Since I didn’t even want to drive to my studio classes, I did more at-home workouts this week. I am still focusing on my physical therapy exercises, but I intersperse them with upper body moves to make it a full-body workout.

I do this routine as super sets in about 50 minutes

I’m actually feeling almost ready to graduate from physical therapy. The only exercise I still struggle with is a simple one–what I call the lateral half-squat step down. This is a really basic move, but you can see how poor my form is on my weak side.

We’ll see what my physical therapist says at my next appointment.

Weekly Wrap

The big news of the week is that I took a full rest day. I know I should do that every week, but I really am hooked on starting my day with a workout. Still, I am getting better at listening to my body, and this week it was saying tired.

Monday: Orange Theory Fitness
You can see from my first block of heart rate data that we did progressively shorter rowing intervals interspersed with a medicine ball exercise. The treadmill workout got progressively harder with incline intervals at 4% then 6%.

Tuesday : CPY2 at CorePower Yoga
Our peak pose was chin stand, and I definitely needed the blocks for my shoulders. Ann said I almost had it, but it sure didn’t feel that way. And yes, my chin was a bit sore the next day!

Wednesday: Strength Workout
Somewhere in the greater-D.C. area there was enough snow for the Federal government to call for a 3-hour delay, but not in my neighborhood.

Just a smidge of snow!

Thursday: Rest Day

Friday: Strength Workout
We did get snow on Friday, but not enough to cancel work. It was the perfect day to have some Run Fast Cook Fast Eat Slow chicken soup for lunch.

Saturday:  Orange Theory Fitness
Between the frigid forecast and frosty sidewalks, I opted for a rare weekend Orange Theory Fitness class. The temperature reading in my car confirmed I made the right decision.

We did row-run-row switches, so I got more splat points than usual from getting my heart rate up on the treadmill during my “rowing” block. We also did a countless number of squats–squats, squat jacks and, squats with the TRX straps.

Sunday: 22.5 mile bike ride
The sunshine and temperatures into the 40s lured me onto my bike. The weather turned out to be great, but the trail conditions were dicey–and icy.

I probably could make it, but wasn’t going to enjoy trying.

The first 6 miles of our route were pretty clear, the next 3 had more snowy patches, and when it looked like there’d be more snow than pavement for a while, we turned around. I wasn’t enjoying traversing the snowy patches on my road bike, and I had nothing to prove.

And that’s a wrap!

I’m joining Holly and Wendy for the Weekly Wrap-you should too!

  1. Wendy says:

Sammy Jo had me doing those lateral step down thingies and it was a struggle! I told her I’d do them at home…

Glad you’re enjoying that cookbook! I may have to buy it for myself!

  2. kookyrunner says:

I did a lot more home based workouts as well. I was very thanking to have a good amount of workout equipment at home.

I’m glad that you took a full rest day! I try to take a rest day every week – it helps me to recharge.

  3. I don’t think I would have braved the bike w the icy conditions I am a wimp with that for sure. Looks like a much warmer week for us!

  4. Good for you taking a complete rest day! I ended up taking an extra one this week, just due to sickness 🙂 It’s hard to step back and take it “easy” but the recovery is worth it. I have heard Orange Theory is an awesome fitness class!

  5. Like you, I thrive on daily (early morning) workouts. I like getting up early (and that’s when my body naturally wake ups LOL). I think as long as some of the workouts aren’t as intense (or as long) as others, they’re fine if your body isn’t rebelling.

  6. Graduating from PT is a huge thing!! Woohoo!

  7. Marcia says:

I didn’t make it to the gym a single time during the vortex. I didn’t even wanna leave my car out in the parking lot. You are brave to go cycling in those conditions!

  8. Liz Dexter says:

Hooray for rest days! And well done for turning back on that snow – yikes! The rest of the UK has had quite a lot of snow and we’ve had almost nothing here in the middle, very odd!

  9. Darlene says:

    Congrats on finishing PT.

Hope it accomplished what you needed.

Hooray for a rest day. Is this your first? lol

You are always so active even when you can’t run.

    • Coco says:

LOL, I rarely take rest days unless I have to get to the airport early. but my strength days are pretty light on my legs.

      • Darlene says:

I usually rest 3 days a week. My goal is play tennis on one and do yoga or the gym on the other days. But it rarely happens. Running is my priority, obviously.

  10. Yep I chose to do a lot of workouts at home as well this week.

Great that you’re wrapping up PT – That step down move drives me crazy because it seems like it should be so easy but it’s not – my form still needs work.

You were brave to go cycling in those conditions!

  11. Chaitali says:

We had similar thoughts to yours on our Sunday route too. The warmer temps were nice but the snow on the trail was still going to make things difficult and we decided to look for an easier option instead of trudging through the snow 🙂

  12. Organic Runner Mom says:

Eeek! That did look icy for biking! I too wanted to hibernate last week so did a lot of crossfit. I am still curious about Orange Theory. Sadly we do not have one here so I will probably never get to try it 🙁

    • Coco says:

Crossfit intimidates me! We have OTF studios popping up all over the place here — but we have a huge population to draw from.

  13. The weather is forcing so many of us to work out in our homes. I think we all have a bit of cabin fever. Good for you getting out there – though that bike trail looks a little scary!

  14. oh goodness, yes! Bring on that spring weather! Our winter hasn’t even been too bad but I’m so sick of snow and cold!

  15. Jen says:

I would love to try Orange Theory! We don’t have one where I live.

  16. therightfits says:

Chin stand, wow! That’s one I haven’t had before in a corepower class!

Corepower is a really great option here in Minneapolis as there are a ton of studios, but man, the teachers really vary…I hope you have good teachers there!

  17. I say good move for turning back on the bike. No point risking a fall on that very scary looking path!

  18. Janelle @ Run With No Regrets says:

It’s always good to be able to do some workouts at home when the weather is rough! I’m envious that you went out on your bike…you’re much braver than I am!

Once again I’m stalking your PT exercises! I do a few stretches here and there but your routine looks great. I def need more single-leg balance!

    • Coco says:

Oh, no bravery involved – I did not think the path was going to be snowy!

Since running is basically alternating single-leg balancing, I guess doing them standing helps recruit and strengthen the right muscles.

  19. runswithpugs says:

I just want some sun again! The dreariness makes me want to hibernate! The weather has absolutely warmed up (shorts weather again!) so I think it’s time for spring.

I have a friend who stays in PT even after she “graduated” because she claims it has been keeping her incredibly healthy for running. I think people are usually happy to get out of it, but she sticks around!

I can’t believe you were able to ride your bike on that slushy pavement! Rockstar!

  20. I think the dogs went 4 days without any walking last week. On sat I thought it would warm up enough for a walk, but when I opened the door in the afternoon to 22 feels like 10, nope.

The bad news about the nice couple of days we did get was it wasn’t enough to melt all the snow, so things were really wet — and now that it’s cold again it’s somewhat icy. 🙁

Rest days really are important, especially as we get older! At some point if you don’t rest your body will definitely let you know about it, so good job doing it!

  21. We got about three inches of snow out here on Tuesday. I can understand not wanting to take Scooby out when it was so cold. Brrrr……
