Talking About New Year’s Resolutions At The January Ultimate Coffee Date

Happy New Year! Deborah and I are so happy to see you at the first Ultimate Coffee Date of 2019. We hope one New Year’s resolution you keep is to comment on other coffee date posts. It’s your participation that makes it enjoyable and worthwhile. We will keep the link up open all weekend, so there’s plenty of time to enjoy our virtual get-together and catch up on what’s going on in each other’s lives.

coffee date new years resolutions

In keeping with the season, I’m sharing a few of my goals for the New Year–and seeking your advice on how to reach them.

Catching Up On Christmas

If we were having coffee, the first thing I would ask is if you received any fun fitness gifts. My favorite is the Orange Mud car seat cover/towel that Rachel reminded me of in one of her gift guides. I put it on my wish list and Santa delivered! It’s too late to save my car seats from the aftermath of my sweaty studio classes, but at least I can prevent further damage and be more hygienic!

While more fitness-inspired than fitness-related, I also love this bicycle key rack my mother-in-law got us — although I prefer how it looks without keys hanging off it. 😉

If we were having coffee, I would ask if you’ve had an issues with package delivery. Before Christmas I saw a video on Ring showing a delivery woman tossing a package into someone’s yard. It looked light–I hope it wasn’t fragile! On New Year’s Eve my husband found two boxes left in the middle of our front yard (which isn’t that big), and the next day I noticed this package in my neighbor’s ivy. I put it on their front step because I think they’d missed it–it was a bit soggy from being left out overnight.

Amazon Locker is looking better and better!

Old Goals And New Year’s Resolutions

If we were having coffee, I would tell you that I’m not great at setting goals or making new year’s resolutions, but I still like to carve out some time at this time of year to think about what I’d like to do differently.

When I look back at goals from years past, it is satisfying to see those I don’t need to focus on anymore. While I do need to lay off the Peppermint Bark until next Christmas, I don’t need to go on a diet. While work still causes me undue stress from time to time, I’m much better at letting good enough be good enough and keeping things in perspective. With 44 yoga classes last year, I don’t even have to put “do more yoga” on my goals list!

On the other hand, there are some goals I still need to focus on. Moving more at workGoing to bed earlier. Drinking more water. I’ve learned that if I am going to make progress with these goals, I need to figure out concrete steps I can take to reach them. Here’s what I’ve come up with so far:

  • I can set my Garmin “move” alarm and heed it (that’s the hard part).
  • I can go to bed at 10 pm instead of trying to watch one more TV show and falling asleep on the sofa before the second commercial break.
  • I can use my work “move” breaks to refill my water bottle and drink water with dinner.

If we were having coffee, I would ask if you have any other ideas for me?

  1. Liz Dexter says:

I have a vague resolution of “work less, read more”. I think read more will come from having marathon and ultra training as those involve early to bed and sitting and reading for an hour before settling down, plus reading before breakfast rather than working. We’ll see. Have a great 2019!

  2. Wendy says:

I’d love to spend less time on social media. And I need to cut back on my wine intake, if for no other reason but to stop the pounds that are starting to creep up!

    Happy New Year!

  3. Ugh, I need to get to bed earlier, too! I’m doing good with all the water LOL I’m just not tired at 10:00. Like you, I do not do resolutions, but I do try to set a few monthly goals…they’re much less overwhelming for me. That bike key holder is really neat!

  4. Marcia says:

You got some fun gifts! Since the holiday break I’ve fallen into the habit of staying up late then sleeping later than usual and I hate it. I love my early morning time.

  5. pglooney says:

I’m not big on resolutions but I did have trouble with packages. Mostly them not coming to my house but my neighbors instead.

  6. I’m kind of an antsy person so I never have issue with needing to force myself to take move breaks but I really like the idea of filling up your water then. Also, instead of just going to fill up the bottle and going straight back, add in a few loops around the offices or go climb a few flights of stairs, too. It’s a nice break from your desk, and you’ll likely clear your head and be more focused when you get back!

Santa brightb me the Noxgear tracer360 visibility vest! I love it!

    • Coco says:

I just lose track of time, and all of a sudden I haven’t moved for 2 hours! Taking the long way to get water is a good idea. Oh, I’ve been eyeing the Noxgear — looks great.

  7. Laurie says:

Your goals for 2019 are good ones – realistic, achievable, beneficial. I like them! I usually don’t set goals, but for some reason this year a word came to me that I want to focus on – balance. I want to think about balance in 2019. Happy New Year!

    • Coco says:

Balance is a good word to have as a focus. I definitely feel like my life has a better balance now than in year’s past — but maybe that’s just because of the recent holidays!

  8. It is so hard to go to bed earlier and you get up so darn early too! I always carry around water so that makes me drink more. If you drink more water, you will have to get up to go to the bathroom more so you will get more walking in at work 🙂

    • Coco says:

I carry water around on weekends. I should go back to using my Camelbak water bottle at work. I do drink more when I use it.

  9. That bicycle rack is adorable! We don’t exchange gifts, although I did buy some new fitness clothes — but less than in past years.

I like having goals, but those action steps are so important! I can often be found pacing around the house — I think the furkids have finally gotten used to that and no longer “dog” my steps.

    • Coco says:

LOL. Scooby follows me around from room to room, but usually lays down and watches me putter around.

      • Usually Bandit follows me around, but sometimes he’ll stay upstairs when I’m downstairs or visa versa. He can’t seem to figure out how to be a lap dog, which is kind of weird cause he’s not really all that big (about 16 lbs).

  10. Darlene says:

Happy New Year. My post will be up tomorrow.

I’m with you on the goals thing. I know what I have to do:

move at work not sit at my desk all day and even eat lunch at my desk.’

drink more water …actually just drink some water…really bad with this

go to bed earlier…now I stay up to knit and then I get in bed and read…too long. Regret it the next morning,

  11. Happy New Year! I’m not big on resolutions but I’m resolving to take some more time to smell the roses and to appreciate my active time and miles (after seeing people being sidelined with terrible illnesses/injuries), to call/see people more and to be patient with myself and others.

    • Coco says:

Can’t argue with those goals. I dealt with some injuries, but was able to run through them, so they weren’t too bad — and made me recommit to stretching.

  12. Cari says:

I have a different package situation — I have them sent to work sometimes because it’s easier than trying to connect with my super to get the package. and I feel bad having her have to babysit my mail, although she doesn’t mind. When I ordered my microwave I didn’t pay attention to the shipping and had it sent to work too. Oops. Luckily it wasn’t too heavy in an Uber
I take the “long way” around to our office kitchen to fill my water, and ac olleague and I made a routine a couple of years ago to always go for a walk at lunch even if we have our lunches. Sometimes it’s just 5m around the corner, but it’s a great mental break

    • Coco says:

I get my valuable packages delivered to work, but good reminder to consider the size I’d have to lug home. Years ago I had a lunch-walking buddy, but these days we tend to eat at our desks. 🙁

  13. I’m so with you on the need to go to bed earlier! I’ve got to learn to step away from the Daily Show 😉

Your bike key rack is so fun!

    Happy New Year Coco!

    • Coco says:

OMG, that’s so late — although I often wake up on the sofa while it’s on and then have to make myself go to bed instead of watching it.

  14. I set two goals for myself. I want to show more appreciation for others daily and I also want to step outside some boxes I have created for myself. I know that sounds deep, but it isn’t really. I just don’t want to limit myself!

  15. I think the only running related gear I got was a workout outfit. That is a cute key holder. I don’t make resolutions, that way I am not disappointed when I don’t reach them….ha

  16. I’m sure you’ve heard me complain about not getting enough sleep as well. It sounds like we both have the same problem – we love getting up early, but aren’t quite disciplined enough to get to bed as early as we should. I guess I should add that as something I can work on in 2019 as well.

    Thanks for the linkup!

    • Coco says:

Exactly! I want to stay up, get up early, and still get enough sleep. That’s even harder than having my cake and eating it too. 😉

  17. I don’t think we’ve ever had a problem with package delivery, though I often wonder if we’ve missed something we weren’t expecting. I also don’t technically make new year’s resolutions. I just generally try to work on making everything better!

  18. I have an Orange Mud towel and I love it! It’s really a great thing for us runners to have.
I’ve also got a goal to work on drinking more water this year. Going to bed earlier is always a good thing too. 🙂

  19. Elaine says:

I like to set a word intention for the year and I picked Growth for 2019.

  20. runswithpugs says:

I love setting goals, but not resolutions. I try to make them manageable but also just outside the comfort zone.

We had exactly zero issues with packages. I read so many horror stories on our neighborhood FB page, but at the end of the day, all of our mail and deliveries came on time and unscathed. Knock on wood.

I absolutely have to work on drinking water. Any water. It’s just so hard for me and I imagine I could make so many improvements if I was just slightly better hydrated.

  21. Farrah says:

Aww, that’s nice of you to bring it to their door! I think someone ran off with some of my packages over the holidays while I was working nights. :[

Best of luck to you on your goals! I reallyyyyy need to work on drinking more water, so I’m right there with ya!

  22. we don’t do gifts for the holidays at all so no weird package deliveries and nothing fitness-related (or other) received. you are a good neighbor though for sure – I wonder what delivery people are thinking ??? or do you think it’s others in the neigborhood having fun with packages?

while I don’t need help with drinking water, I would also like to move more at work and go to bed on time! I think what bothers me the most about going to bed on time is that I feel like I haven’t had a chance to do anything to “relax” – I come home, eat something quick, go to training, come home again, prep food for the next day, shower, go to bed. So that’s really where my struggle is. Perhaps it’s just a mindset I need to change?

do you drink coffee or tea at all at work? I have found that by replacing coffee with herbal tea I simply drink more water that way (caffeinated drinks don’t count towards water). I also try to drink quite a bit of water before i even go to work but I’m not sure how that would work for others (my commute is a 10 min bike ride so having to stop off at a restroom on the way to work is not an issue at all for me). I have a bottle of 750ml and I drink two of those per day, plus my herbal tea. Do you have a certain amount you want to drink during the day? how big is your bottle? what makes it so hard for you – is it that you don’t feel thirsty or you don’t like the way it tastes? What about adding a Nuun or a SiS tablet to your water to help get it down?

I definitely have goals for 2019 and habits i want to improve on – like taking the stairs for example, getting my steps in, getting out of bed on time to work out, etc. I feel very focused now (and Focus was my word last year) and this year I’m choosing to do what needs to be done to help me reach my goals. This year my word is CHOOSE.

    • Coco says:

I think the delivery people were just in a hurry — takes to long to walk all the way to the door with the package!

As for my water consumption, I just don’t drink anything at work once I’ve had my coffee because it’s inconvenient. 😉 My favorite is to get a carafe of sparkling water, but for that I have to go up two flights of stairs, which would help my “move more” goal too, but takes more time. I know it sounds ridiculous, but that’s my perception.

  23. Chrissy Carroll says:

That bicycle key rack is adorable! Do you know where she got it from? I want one, lol!

I didn’t set specific resolutions this year but I did choose a word of the year, which I did last year as well. This year my word is intentional!

    • Coco says:

I think the key rack was found at a gift shop in Asheville, NC — might be a bit far for you! Intentional is a very good word!

  24. Chelsea Stockdale says:

I love that bike key hanger! How cute!!

I love those goals to get you moving at work! When I was in the office I would always try to get up for a 10 minute walk in the morning and the afternoon just to get my blood flowing a little bit! It helped so much and I even grabbed a few girlfriends so we could chat during our walk!

    Have a great weekend!!
