December Runfessions

It’s the end of the year, which means that many of us are looking back over the past 12 months, taking stock of where we are, considering how far we’ve come (or not), and figuring out what we did right and what we’d like to do better in the new year. With all that sole-searching, it’s the perfect time to participate in the Runfessions link up hosted at Marcia’s Healthy Slice  until Marcia fixes her main site.

December RunfessionsI’m also joining the Friday Five link up hosted by Lacey and Miranda at Fairytales and Fitness. Did you participate in their fun holiday gift card exchange?

December Runfessions

Runfessions Looking Back On The Past 12 Months

I runfess that I was feeling pretty blah about running until Scooby came into my life.  We worked up slowly, but it didn’t take me long to figure out that this dog loves to run, and has more endurance than I do.

I runfess that he’s often the reason I get out of bed and out the door for a run these days. Our runs go more smoothly if we get them in before the squirrels are up. 😉

Runfessions Taking Stock Of Where I Am Now

I runfess that I am ending the year as I started it, in physical therapy. I am grateful that my plantar fasciitis has not made a come-back, but my nagging hip (?) pain that’s been building for months finally reached a point that demanded attention. Luckily both the orthopedist and my physical therapist believe it can be “fixed” with physical therapy, and neither think I need to stop running in the meantime.

I know all these exercises will make me a stronger runner.

I runfess that I had more faith in my physical therapist’s assessment–which she made after a thorough evaluation–than in the diagnosis the orthopedist gave me after a 2 minute exam. 🙁

Runfessions Looking Ahead To The New Year

I runfess that I don’t have any burning running goals for 2019, but I am looking forward to the Cherry Blossom 10 Mile Run in April because I know a bunch of you were accepted in the lottery and I can’t wait to meet you! (If you weren’t so lucky, or if you forgot to enter, you can still earn a charity entry by raising $500 by February 15. ) I also will be running the Richmond Half Marathon for the first time. I couldn’t resist when I realized it falls on my birthday this year (November 16). There’s plenty of time to sign up to join me for that one if you want to help me celebrate. 😉

With those two races already on my 2019 calendar, I runfess that my 2019 running goal may be to focus on having fun and planning more runs with friends.

Do you have any running regrets for 2018?

Make sure you mark your new calendars and join Deborah and me for the January Ultimate Coffee Date next weekend. We’ll open the (link-up) doors on Friday, and keep the coffee brewing all weekend.

I am so looking forward to Cherry Blossom and meeting you!!! Happy New Year!

  2. Marcia says:

I’m right there with you on the hip strength thing. I’m doing all of those exercises to hopefully build my side hip strength so I can keep my hips happy through marathon training. I’m bummed I won’t be at Cherry Blossom to see you!

Those PT-type exercises are so important to keep up with as you build your mileage, but often are the first thing I drop because they’re not very fun. -)

  3. I need to get on the hip-strength-building band wagon. I do some of the exercises mentioned, but not consistently. That’s gonna be one of my January goals (so, thanks!!). I am really looking forward to the Cherry Blossom 😉

  4. I runfess I actually stopped running with Bandit, which I found annoying, frankly, and he doesn’t really seem to miss it.

I wish Cherry Blossom were in the cards, but it’s not. 🙁

I don’t think there will be a lot of halfs for me this year, although you never know. I haven’t done VA so that is actually tempting (and I won’t be hosing Thanksgiving next year either). Something to think about anyway. Although I’ve had my eye on Kiawah so long . . .

. . . it’s also part of why I signed up for BDR Savannah, it’s a couple of days after my birthday.

I’d love to meet you in Richmond! Running with Scooby can be challenging, but also motivating.

      • Bandit was actually pretty good, but he was a little slow (after the initial OMG I’m running burst) and the last few times I picked him up to run he didn’t really seem to want to. Maybe it’s because he’s getting older too.

I’ll definitely take a look at Richmond, but I’m not sure what I want to do in VA — or what’s going on that far in advance!

  5. Chaitali says:

Richmond is a great race! I’m sure you’ll have fun with it. Fun seems like a great goal for next year 🙂

  6. kookyrunner says:

Sorry to hear that you’ve been having issues with your hip – I can totally relate. Thanks for posting all of those strengthening exercises. I already do most of them but there were 3 that I can add to my routine 🙂

Looks like you already have 2 great races on your calendar for 2019!

    • Coco says:

It’s amazing how many good exercises there are. I’m already adding others while I’m at PT, but these are my “homework.”

  7. I’ve heard great things about the Richmond Half Marathon and the Cherry Blossom 10 Mile Run! Here’s to a great year for you and for your hip to behave. You don’t have time for it to act silly.

  8. I may have to try some of those exercises. My hip is fine at the moment, but my chiro says it’s really the cause of all my calf and ankle issues… We definitely need to meet up in 2019 for a run and coffee.

  9. Darlene says:

Sorry about the hip issue. Hope it is short-lived.

I think I need a dog. I told my hubby that the other day so I have company on the run.

I regret not running 1000 miles just because.

I wish I had signed for Cherry Blossom .. some year.

  10. deborahbrooks14 says:

It’s really great that Scooby has given you new reasons to run. I hope that some of those fun friendly runs might include you slowing down and running with me sometime! Looking forward to our coffee date next weekend

  11. I’m so sorry about your hip issues. I hope PT does the trick for you.

I’m bummed that Cherry Blossom will not be in the plans this year. I’m really hoping we’ll get to meet up at some point. I’ve heard great things about Richmond…wonder if I could get there this year?

  12. Liz Dexter says:

I am sad I missed the Manchester Marathon in the spring but I know it was the right thing to do and I’ve had kudos ever since from running my unofficial marathon. Other than that, no regrets. I have two races next year and have a feeling my training partner for the ultra will be encouraging me to sign up for a trail half, eeps!

  13. Cari says:

Glad to hear you don’t think you’ll need surgery and that you don’t have to stop running. No regrets here – it was a really good year.
