Wrapping Up April

How can we already be wrapping up April? More specifically, how can April be over already when we’ve hardly had any spring weather? Don’t get me wrong, we had a few nice days, but we also had a number of dreary, rainy, windy and down right cold days. I’d really like some spring before it’s summer–but they’re already calling for temperatures in the 80s this week.

Wrapping Up April

My April Garmin stats don’t tell the whole story. Those 72 running miles include two 10 mile races, and those 107 miles on my bike included two Conte’s Hill Rides. It’s been a busy month!

Weekly Wrap

Monday: Strength Training
My legs felt pretty good after the GW Parkway Classic , but my PF reared it’s ugly head again, so I took it easy with a light strength training workout at home, focusing on my PT exercises and a few upper body moves.

After I wrote up my race recap I found out I finished 7th in my age group!

Tuesday: CycleBar

Wednesday: Orange Theory Fitness
I don’t usually like classes with a lot of changes, but this one was fun. We rotated four times, spending 4 min/3 min/4 min/ 3 min at each station.

Thursday: 4.25 mil run
It finally is light early enough to fit in a #runrise run before work. The views along the Reflecting Pool never disappoints!

Can you see the flag to the right of the Capitol?

Friday:  Core Power Yoga + Physical Therapy

Saturday: Conte’s Hill Ride

I know I’m getting stronger because I noticed the long descents
instead of just focusing on the hard climbs.

Sunday: 12 mile run
I knew this run was going to be hard, but the wind made it even harder, and the hills on the way home nearly did me in. My mile splits ranged from 9:06 (mile 7) to 10:10 (miles 1 and 9) so that average pace doesn’t tell the whole story–or even seem to belong to the story of this run.

Love the sight and scent of these lilacs along the W&OD trail.

The next event on my calendar is the Denver Colfax Half Marathon May 20. I plan to do one more 12 miler next weekend, cut back to 8 miles the week before, and keep my expectations low for this half marathon in the mile high city. The course itself is pretty flat, but I know from my experience at the Urban 10 Miler last year that the altitude will have an impact.

I’m linking up with Holly and Wendy for the Weekly Wrap.

Mark you calendars to join us for the Ultimate Coffee Date link up next weekend!

What numbers in your week don’t tell the whole story?

I’m so sorry to hear that PF is back. That is a malady like no other!!! I am planning on running a half (shhhh!) the same day as you. That’s why I was so upset about my flare. Hopefully I’ll be back on track again. You too!

That reflecting pool picture is gorgeous. I’m really going to try to come to DC next spring for Cherry Blossom!

  2. I always get so tired just reading about all your activity — plus you have a demanding job!

Sounds like you have a solid plan for the half. Denver is a great city so I’ll bet you really enjoy it!

  3. Sara says:

Sorry to hear that your PF is back. You got a lot of great workouts in this week though! I’m really excited that that we have so much daylight! It was light until about 8:30 last night…I need that extra little bit to help with my motivation at the end of the day.

  4. Lesley says:

It took me a good six months to adjust to the altitude, and even then I still get out of breath at times. Good luck these last couple of weeks.

  5. Clarinda says:

April went by so fast, didn’t it?! Fastest month of the year! I’m trying a local CycleBar on Saturday. They’re doing a free Cycle De Mayo on 5/5. I’m excited and nervous.

  6. Kim G says:

Sorry to hear about your PF flare up πŸ™ I know it had been at bay for a while. Hopefully the flare up is very temporary!

Kudos to you for sticking it out in less than ideal weather conditions for yesterday’s run. The wind can be SO brutal!

    • Coco says:

It’s been flaring up after my races, but going away by the time I get in to see my PT, so hopefully it’s still getting better.

  7. Gosh, your DC pics are always so beautiful! I’d probably be daily runner if I lived there because I’d want to see all the sights all the time. I think your 10-mile race (and 7th place AG) is awesome!!!

  8. HoHo Runs says:

Nice mileage this month in both the running and cycling categories. I love the color block cycling jersey! Where do you shop for them? The reflecting pool photo is stunning and you are so lucky to get to see that often. I am also concerned with the altitude for my next race! Hopefully, my downhill course will counteract any negative effects. Hope your PF has calmed down now. Thanks for linking.

    • Coco says:

I think downhill will make up for the elevation, and know you’ll do great.

My husband is my bike mechanic and personal shopper — he’s an on-line shopping pro. πŸ˜‰

  9. Seeing progress on the bike is fabulous! I find it’s easier to improve on the bike vs running. Hope we can get out there together soon

  10. You have the best views! APRIL went by so quick but I’m kind of glad. I think we skipped Spring here too and went straight to summer. Would have been nice to have spring but bring on the summer heat, I don’t mind!

  11. RenΓ©e says:

nice numbers! sorry t hear your PF flared up though πŸ™

that photo with the reflection pool is amazing by the way!

my numbers that don’t tell the whole story are of my regular commute biking. I biked 50KM that I recorded but I didn’t record going to and from work. Probably it’s more like 66 – 70.

  12. Darlene says:

Great month of activity. Too bad about the PF. I hope it stays away for awhile.

That sunrise pic is amazing. It makes me want to go to DC.

  13. Marcia says:

Seriously it feels like we should just be starting April not MAY. We haven’t had a ton of rain here but it’s been wintery cold mostly. Sorry about the PF. My 12 year old is showing signs of it. πŸ™

  14. Chaitali says:

Good point about the altitude, I always forget about that when looking at an elevation chart. It sounds like you’ve got a good plan to be ready for the race though! I was surprised by the chill and wind on Sunday. I definitely was not appropriately dressed for my run.

  15. Cari says:

Whoa, that’s a gorgeous #runrise! I was trying to get a sunset shot while in town for Cherry Blossoms, but the Friday clouded over early and I had to get to Union Station ahead of sunset on Sunday. The skyline in DC is just magic.

    Congratulations on 7th!

I feel you on spring. We’re hitting 80, then in the 60s next week so I feel like we have a partial chance at spring

  16. Angela says:

Impressive! And miles are miles – they count even more because you were in an event! Hope you PF clears up soon!

  17. Great week of workouts and month.
Bummer about your PF. Injuries can be frustrating!

  18. De Bolton says:

I am curious about Orange Theory classes looks interesting and who wouldn’t want to run rise with that view? I really hope that your PF re misses soon.

  19. You had a great month! So sorry the damn PF is back – such a frustrating injury. Good luck with the next couple of weeks getting ready for Denver!

  20. Jenn says:

Great week! I love that you can run by the Reflecting Pool so often. How lucky!

Oh, I always have wind or humidity or something like that messing up my pace. It’s crazy how the elements can take their toll.

I really want to try OTF. I just wish one was closer to me. πŸ™

  21. Sorry to hear about the PF flare up, ugh! I have dealt with that too so I feel your pain. Hope you are feeling better soon!!

  22. Esther says:

Great job on your April miles!
PF is no joke! So frustrating when it flares up.
Hope your last training runs go well as well as the Denver half!
Shockingly, one of my best half marathon times was the Rock n Roll Denver half a few years back.
    Cheers to May!

  23. Farrah says:

This year is seriously going by fast (and spring seriously needs to actually get here :'( ).

It looks like you got a great week of workouts in! I should maybe start including mine into a post somewhere to keep myself accountable!

See you for this month’s Ultimate Coffee Date! <3!

  24. Nice job! All that cycling seems to be paying off and the hills are getting “easier”!

Hope your PF is feeling better…I really need to dedicate some time to work on my situation….
