On-The-Go Breakfast Sandwiches

I usually eat one of my favorite breakfasts at home, but sometimes I need to get something on the go.

There is a Starbucks® by my office (does that go without saying?) and my favorite breakfasts there are the Perfect Oatmeal (I usually stir in 1/2 the nuts and the raisins) and the reduced-fat turkey bacon with egg white and white cheddar cheese English muffin sandwich (seriously, that name is longer than my custom latte order–decaf, tall, skinny, one-pump cinnamon dolce latte).

Even though there is a Panera® near our house, I don’t usually eat there because I think of their food as being high-calorie and carb-heavy. On a recent visit I saw a sign with information about their new Power Breakfast Sandwich.

It has a whole egg, white cheddar cheese and ham on whole grain bread. The nutrition information was surprisingly good and it was really delicious!

The calories and fiber content of the sandwiches are comparable.  I always thought the Starbucks® sandwich was high in sodium, and am surprised to see that the Panera® sandwich is even higher. (Ugh.) The Panera® sandwich has more protein and fewer carbs, but I don’t worry about those numbers very much.

As much as I love the Starbucks® sandwich, I must admit that the made-to-order taste of the Panera® sandwich makes it extra-yummy as compared to the made-to-microwave Starbucks® sandwich. On the other hand, sometimes you just want bacon!

Have you tried these breakfast sandwiches?

What is your go-to drink order at Starbucks®?

The Panera stats don't add up, which always makes me leary (I calculate 375 cals). Probably higher in sodium because of the Ham vs the Turkey bacon. I admit that I drive by a billboard of this on my way to work and it always looks delicious. Glad to know it tasted good…

Have you tried these versus any of the frozen ones (more "made to microwave")? De-Lites or even the Vitalicious new breakfast sandwiches? Just curious 🙂

    I agree with Carrie, I <3 breakfast too 🙂

Check out my Breakfast Bonanza post. 😀 The Jimmy Dean D-Lites are pretty good. The other Vitamuffin sandwich from the box of two is gathering ice crystals in the freezer.

Are they comparable in price? I like Panera, but always find them so pricey. And I’m not really a big coffee person, so I never visit Starbucks.
We have an Einstein Bagels that I go to on Saturdays after my long workout, I order an egg wrap that’s supposed to come with turkey sausage, but I ask them to put regular deli turkey on it instead of the sausage.
I’m willing to bed the Panera one was more filling. Yum, breakfast sandwiches are the best!

  3. I plan my long runs to end at a Starbucks. While I do like that sandwich, I also like the one that’s on the artisan bread and I love the feta/spinach wrap. I love a yummy sandwich and cup of coffee after my long run. My coffee of choice is usually a skinny vanilla or skinny caramel. Although sometimes I just get drip coffee and fat-free milk. I love coffee hot hot, so I think the latte doesn’t stay hot enough for long enough. Thanks for comparing with Panera, there’s a Panera next to my gym, but I try to avoid it because I do think it’s more pricey and it’s just a bad habit to start. I justify Starbucks on my long run cuz it’s like 3 times a month max. I <3 breakfast, can you tell? Thanks for posting!

My drink is Skinny Cinnamon Dolce Latte LOVE IT! I never eat anything from there though too high in calories and do not want to start a new foodie problem.

Sheri, that's my favorite latte too, but I like it with only "one pump" of the syrup. The Starbucks oatmeal and sandwiches aren't bad for meals. The new "petite" treats are under 200 cals. They are not the most nutrition snacks but sometimes a girl needs fix of chocolate!

My trainer (also an RD) likes Panera's recently revamped and revised menu with nutrition counts….have not been there in a while…saw their soups and sandwiches at Target! Whole Foods has a new "line" of pre-packaged entrees with nutrition info – have not tried any yet, but seem to be many good options (but kind of pricey).
