Portland Oregon Getaway

When my daughter asked if I’d be interested in a girls’ getaway this summer, I might have surprised her with my resounding YES! She selected Portland, Oregon for hiking and vegan restaurants, and we both had a wonderful time.

The view of Columbia River Gorge from Lemmons Viewpoint.

Portland Oregon Getaway

Our big hike was the Multnomah-Wakeena Falls loop in the Colunbia River Gorge scenic area. It’s about 45 min out of the city, so we rented a car for the day and made the easy drive after grabbing bagel sandwiches at Ben and Esther’s. Like many park activities these days, we had to make reservations, but the entrance fee was only $2.

The loop is 4.9 miles according to the map, but my Garmin tracked 5.9 miles and 1500 ft of climbing.

The views were worth it!

We also hiked at the Hoyt Arboretum in Washington Park.

In two hours we barely made a dent in the 12 miles of trails.

Weekly Wrap

I used Marriott points for our hotel, and lucked out with the gym—which even had 2 Peloton bikes. With the time difference, getting up at 6 felt like sleeping in and left me plenty of time for a workout before my daughter wanted to get going. I kept my workouts light because I knew we’d be on our feet all day.

This screenshot shows my Friday, Saturday, and Sunday workouts. Olivia’s Barbie ride was perfection!

Monday: Airport Yoga
We left our hotel at 6 am for the journey home. Waiting at the gate, I was prodded by this suggestion from Southwest. 🙂

Tuesday: 10 min Core + 20 min LB Strength + 3.25 Tread Miles
Back home and slightly jet lagged, I let myself hit the snooze button a few times. After walking Scooby I did a strength + tread workout in my basement.

Wednesday: 10 min Core + 20 UB Strength + 30 min Peloton ride
Office gym day, with Sam’s Motley Crue ride as the highlight!

Thursday: 10 min Barre + 4.25 Miles
I was overdue for Scooby miles, and the weather was great!

Friday: 15 min Core + 20 min UB Strength + 20 min Ride + 10 min ALW
After walking Scooby, I did mix of Peloton workouts in my basement, riding my Schwinn IC4 for a bit of sweaty cardio.

Saturday: 5 min Core + 10 min LB + 6.3 Scooby Miles
The temperatures were still on the cool side (upper 60s), but the humidity was in full force—it was even foggy when I started out. I was drenched and Scooby was in full panting mode when we finished.

A huge thank you to Deborah and Kim for hosting the Weekly Run Down link up.

Have you seen Barbie? Did you think it was profound or just playful?

Love the idea of a girls getaway. I’m planing one to Tampa in Dec.

I bet it’s hard going back to work after that.

I loved Barbie. I found it funny but it definitely had a message.

  2. Your mommy/daughter trip looked fantastic! What a great getaway 😉 I’ve been trying to get all the Motley Crue workouts in, and missed the cycling workout with Sam, so I just added to my schedule for later…thanx for the info!!

  3. Deborah Brooks says:

Looks like you and your daughter had a really nice time. I have a trip w my mom and daughter together in a few weeks that I am really looking forward to. The Barbie ride was fun. I am trying to get back on track w workouts!

  4. Jenny says:

But wait! Did you do Warrior Pose in the airport? I’m going to give you extra bonus points if you did Warrior 3.
I have to laugh at the contrast between our two vacations- you had beautiful hikes and delicious vegan food in Portland, while I sweated to death and ate takeout in Waco. Oh, and your hotel (unlike mine in Alabama) actually DID have a gym!!! But, one similarity- we both got to spend time with our kids. And that’s the important thing!
I’m sure Scooby was thrilled with your return (as were my cats.)

Aww, how fun to have a girls’ weekend with your daughter! I’m looking forward to my sister weekend in October–we’re going to Banff! I’m having lunch with her tomorrow–we need to start planning.

  6. How sweet that your daughter asked YOU to come with her on a vacation! My mom & I never did that — occasionally we’d go out to lunch or dinner together when my Dad wasn’t there. So fun!

It looks like an amazing trip.

Yes, it was foggy here yesterday too, and man, today it heated up way quicker than I anticipated (but not running).

Oh how wonderful you got to go on a little getaway with your daughter! Portland is a great place to visit, or so I’ve heard… I am dying to go 😉

You still fit in a great roundup of workouts this week. I love how you can take the Peloton app on the go. I haven’t taken any Barbie Classes yet – would you recommend them?

  8. Catrina says:

What a beautiful place Portland is!
Those trails look amazing. Imagine you live there and need to train for a marathon… plenty of trails to choose from!
Is your daughter also into daily fitness like you are? Or does she think you’re crazy for getting up at 6am to do workouts?

  9. Susanne says:

What a lovely choice to do a girls hiking getaway in Oregon. It looks fantastic!
To be honest I knew nothing about this Barbie stuff until I started reading this week’s rundown posts. Is it a movie? A Peloton class? I know nothing, lol!
Nice work with your fitness activities this week.

    • Coco says:

LOL, first and foremost it is a movie, but it has a huge marketing budget so it has taken over the U.S. and there are Peloton classes with songs from the soundtrack. It’s made everything pink quite trendy here.

    What an adventure!

I would love to do a girls’ trip with my mom, but she doesn’t love leaving my stepdad, so….

That Barbie ride sounds fun. I bet it was great energy!

  11. Debbie says:

Awww, your girls trip with your daughter sounds fun! My husband and I are scheming to go back to New England this fall for some more gravel adventures on our bikes.

  12. Melissa says:

A girls trip sounds great! I hope I can do one when my daughter gets older – it would be a fun time. I did see Barbie, and thought it was a lot of fun, a lot of cheese, but also had an important (IMO) message. A barbie ride sounds like tons of fun! You always do such fun workouts with Peloton!

  13. Renée says:

LOVED seeing your pics from your Portland trip. Such a great city and area. I really loved living there and only really got into walking and hiking the last year I was there. I also went a few times with my mom as well and usually we got lost and ended up walking way more mile than we planned!

Amazing you got your peloton workouts in too and back of course getting those Scooby miles!
