The June Ultimate Coffee Date

If we were having coffee, I might bemoan that Starbucks is not bringing back the self-serve half-and-half pitchers. While I appreciate that the app lets you order various levels of  half-and-half, often that precision gets lots in translation.

I hate to be a difficult customer, but if my Americano looks more like melted coffee ice cream than milk chocolate, I’m going to ask for it to be remade—if the line isn’t too long. When I’m paying nearly $5 (including tax + tip) for what may be my only coffee of the day, it needs to be how I like it.

If we were having coffee, I would ask if you knew Heinz made packets of honey?

Whenever I see these at my office, I do a double-take, thinking they are off-color mustard packets ….

If we were having coffee, I would ask if you shop at a farmer’s market. I will make weekend plans around getting to a farmer’s market for strawberries or apples, but I have a hard time paying so much more for vegetables—unless it’s for a special occasion. I know inflation has hit food prices, but my jaw dropped when I saw corn being sold for $1 an ear last weekend. At least it’s still 20 cents an ear at Giant.

I saw a few people filling their carts—
maybe they will resell them at a farmer’s market next weekend …

If we were having coffee, I would ask if you saw my Eastern Shore Farm to Fork Fondo recap? One thing I didn’t mention is that somewhere around mile 50 I got stung on my neck by a wasp. 🙁 I screamed and swatted it off but didn’t stop riding, thinking a rest stop was just ahead. It wasn’t, but the stinging sensation faded to a dull itch. It’s the second time I’ve gotten stung while riding. The first was on the Reston Metric Century a few years ago, when a bee actually got into my helmet.

What would you tell me over coffee?

So weird you can’t do you own half and half anymore at Starbucks. what happened to this company?? I barely recognise it anymore!

So our “farmers market” is just the market here in NL. And veggies are cheaper generally at the market than at the store. but really depends. Obviously things in season are better to buy and cheaper. And to be honest I don’t do the shopping much, and we now do the meal grocery delivery every other week which is all organic and is quite the deal for 4 meals/2 people. But you get only what you need for the meal nothing more.

I have never gotten stung but I had welts a couple of years ago from the hairy caterpillar we seem to have too much of each year. Their hair gets picked up by the wind and it causes welts and itchiness. I had a pretty long windy bike ride that day and my arms were just covered.

  2. Marcia says:

Oh yikes on the sting. I was stung on the ankle by a hornet while running once. Upon further investigation there was a huge nest on a low-hanging tree branch that I ran right under without seeing. I don’t blame you one bit for wanting your coffee just right!

  3. Michelle says:

The sticker shock on produce prices is real! I am looking forward to the farmers’ markets opening here in a couple more weeks.

Those honey packets do look like mustard lol And, I definitely don’t blame you for being particular about your coffee, especially at Starbucks’ prices. I miss the self-serve pitchers too.

  4. I would rather pay slightly more for good corn than settle for bland corn. I need to make a better effort to get to the farmer’s market for the better produce. Seems like you have lots of issues w Starbucks-have you thought about investing in your own coffee maker for your office so you can have everything exactly the way you like it :)?

  5. Jenny says:

Yes, if you’re paying that much for coffee, it should be exactly the way you like it! I’m the most boring person at Starbucks ever- I always get a grande earl grey tea and I don’t put anything in it. No milk, no honey- just the tea.
Ouch- it’s been a long time since I’ve been stung by a wasp, but it HURTS. I got bitten by something when I did my trail race- I didn’t feel it at the time but later on it swelled up alarmingly, and took a long time to heal. I’m wondering if it was a spider, just judging by how it looked.

  6. Darlene S Cardillo says:

I agree about Starbucks esp since I prefer HnH to milk.

Ouch on the wasp sting! You are tough to ride with that pain. Although what choice do you have?

  7. Ouch!!! I got stung once, around the 5-mile mark of a half marathon. Thankfully, no adverse effects other than a nagging pain at the site (near my ankle). I later found out several other runners also got stung near the same spot on the race course…those angry wasps did not appreciate all the action, LOL.

  8. I shop at the Farmer’s Market and I am happy to pay more for in season / local produce. I always get so much pleasure out of it. Our big market is Saturday and it’s so crowded so we’ve running to the Weds AM market to beat the crowds, too.

Yikes on getting stung. I haven’t been stung since I was a kid, but I am not a fan!

  9. Cari says:

There’s a green market one block away and I was so excited when they started taking Square since I never have cash.I’ll buy sugar snaps there and sometimes apples.
I saw the honey only recently. Weird.
My one week foray into Starbucks was weird. I think Dunkin has the same issues re: splash, but there I drink mine black.
First time I was stung was cycling. Note to self, don’t blow bubbles. It got caught in my gum

  10. I’ve gotten stung getting the mail. 🙂 Thank God I haven’t been stung on the run because for me it really hurts for days!

I don’t use honey in my tea, but I do use honey for some things and I get individual packets for travel or when I go to my mom. I’ve tried wee containers of honey & it doesn’t end well.

We had a CSA through the Foodbank, but alas, they’re not doing it anymore.

  11. Oh no, that sounds scary getting stung on a ride!
I was just telling my husband the other day that I was shocked to see corn was $1 an ear. I don’t buy it anyway cus I’m not a fan of corn. Also, I did not know that Heinz made honey! Have a good weekend and thanks for the link up!

  12. Jenn says:

    Wasps are such jerks!

Our farmer’s markets don’t have the best fruits and veg – we do go to the actual farm stands some times. However, with the amount we consume right now, Costco is really our best bet (and it’s closest out of all of them).

The only thing I ever order at Starbucks is their cold foam drinks, so I never have to add cream or sugar.

  13. Farrah says:

I’ve been meaning to add more fresh fruit in my life and really want to go to farmer’s markets on the regular to support, but it does also hurt my soul too when I see the prices. (Maybe when I’m done paying off my loans though..)

Sorry to hear about being stung! :[ I’ve been accidentally stung before while whitewater rafting (a bee landed on my leg shortly before we went over one of the rapids and panicked, haha ._.).

  14. I am also annoyed about the half-and-half pitcher. I am also particular about my coffee and want to get it just like I want it.
