Haunted Halloween Runs

Happy All Hallow’s Eve eve! I’ve always loved Halloween. I had some amazing homemade costumes as a kid, and have fond memories of trick-or-treating and Halloween parties. When my kids were of prime trick-or-treating age we lived in a neighborhood that went all out for the holiday. People carved pumpkins, decorated their yards, and on October 31 everyone was out, going door to door or handing out candy.

This year, I’ve been enjoying the Halloween decorations on my neighborhood runs. I think this one wins the prize for being the creepiest.

Haunted Halloween Runs

Some houses in my neighborhood seem to decorate for Halloween as much as they do for Christmas. Even on my dark’o’clock runs, I am treated to spooky sights.

This is one of my favorites. The cat eyes open and close—it’s watching you Scooby!

This one spooked me, but then I laughed when I noticed the skeleton in the goal.

There are witches everywhere.

But some look more wicked than others.

I think that’s a victim on the ground in front of her.

The scariest thing that happened to me this week was seeing this when I tried to wake up my phone Saturday morning.

Actually, it took a few tries of plugging it in and pushing all the buttons before that message popped up. Luckily I did have a computer I could use to look up the website and plug my phone into—does everyone still have a compute at home? Once I did that, it started charging. I used my iPad to do some Peloton core classes and a pre-run warm-up to give it time to charge up enough to last through my run. Phew.

Looking at the battery history, it looks like I didn’t plug it in properly last night, and it just died a slow death. Still, it bothers me that plugging it in to the charges wasn’t enough to fire it up again. Oh, Apple!

Weekly Wrap

The hardest workout I did this week was this interval workout from the Matt Wilpers program. In their lingo “tempo” pace is what others refer to as “threshold pace” (and vice versa), so that 5 minute block was tough.

On the fun side, I’ve been taking classes from Peloton’s “Halloween” collection.

I don’t usually take Kendall’s classes, but loves the scary movie soundtrack theme of this one.

I chose Matty’s 2019 Halloween Run for the playlist and took it outside, but he’s dressed up as the muppet Animal.

He did a class Saturday dressed up as a goblin—I will have to take it on my tread on Monday to get the full freaky experience.

Sunday I did Leanne Hainsbey’s new Disney Villains Ride—the playlist was a fabulous as her costume!

And I couldn’t miss Tunde’s infamous Ice Queen class—it’s an arms and light weights class that will definitely leave you wishing for some ice to douse the burn!

I also took Susie Chan’s new Halloween run, and she mentioned bobbing for apples. I remember it as a common game at Halloween parties, but I can’t imagine ever having that game again. People sticking their faces in the same tub of water, trying to get their mouths around the same apples—now that’s scary!

A huge thank you to Deborah and Kim for hosting the Weekly Run Down link up.

Deborah and I will be hosting the November Ultimate Coffee Date Friday November 4th. We hope you’ll join us.

Did you even bob for apples?

  1. I’ve done that Tunde class (probably a few times, LOL), but need to find it back for the holiday in our midst. I’m gonna cue up a couple more of the rides, as well, for later today or tonight. I probably will not be dressing in costume (unless a sweaty “indoor cyclist” counts).

Our neighborhood is interesting for Halloween- about 50% of the people decorate their houses and go all out, and the other 50% do nothing, keep their houses dark and don’t give out any candy. So if you don’t put up any outdoor decorations, the kids won’t even knock on your door. I don’t go crazy, but I put orange and purple lights in the bushes and hang up some ghosts- just so people know we DO have candy.
Those Peloton classes look fun- it’s nice to see Matty is kooky as ever. And I never even thought about it but yes- bobbing for apples is GROSS! Why did I never realize that till now? Yes, it’s hard to imagine that being done much nowadays.

It sounds like you have some good decorations. We have cauldrons of skeleton bones and such, but no lights. Maybe that would lure kids up our hill to our house …

  3. We used to decorate our house all out for Halloween when the kids were here. I kind of miss it! Those tempo workouts are tough! I am looking forward to getting back to them this week

Our neighborhood goes out all for Halloween too!! All the houses are decorated and people drive from nearby just to see and trick or treat. It’s a little crazy but I love it!

I love when a neighborhood goes all in like yours does! So fun for the kids. I’ve done a few of the Halloween Pelo workouts as well but somehow I missed Susie Chan’s run. I adore her, probably because she remind me of when I lived in England. They didn’t have Halloween there back then though!

  5. My neighbors have some great decorations… I drive by but haven’t run there in a while.

I do like Halloween. My mom used to make my costumes and I used go to themed parties when I was younger.

I volunteered today so I did have the chance to dress up.

  6. Our neighborhood is AMAZING for Halloween! A few blocks away go all out and people line up to see the house decorations and get candy. It’s nice to be close to the madness but not have it on my street!

We used to go all out for Halloween too – our neighborhood was so much fun when my boys were little. Now, most of the “kids” are in college or winding down high school.

I haven’t done any of the Peloton Halloween workouts yet – I’ll have to check out Susie’s run.

I would agree with you that people are going overboard with Halloween decorations! I always used to put out spiders and pumpkins but it’s really out of control! Of course, being empty nesters, I have no decorations, lol

Your phone issues reminded me that we need to find a new cellular provider–we had Sprint but since TMobile took over, our service is terrible. Ugh

  9. Whew, I’m glad your phone bounced back once you charged it.

I’m pretty meh about Halloween. I love decorating for fall, but only have a couple of things that are specifically for Halloween.

See you Friday at our coffee date!

Wait – if your iPhone runs out of battery, plugging it into a regular charger won’t fire it up?! That’s good to know.
Fortunately, we have our laptops at home (we work from home all the time), so at least I will know now what to do.

Halloween is a non-event in Cape Town – which is perfect for me. 🙂

  12. Jessie says:

Oh, those Halloween classes look so fun! I need to catch up. I Love all the decorations in your neighborhood!

  13. Kim G says:

Peloton really has some great Halloween content this year, and previous years as well. You already know I love anything to do with Matty and Halloween, lol.

Your neighborhood really goes all out for Halloween. My neighborhood is pretty lame so not a lot of decorations. How does Scooby react to the decorations?

  14. Jenn says:

    So fun.

My spooky season was very limited to my husband’s health. Our Halloween was super low key and I’m sad about it. I guess it’s on to the winter holidays!
