Logging The Most Miles In The Shortest Month

I’m not one to set monthly mileage goals, but if I did I would never expect to log the most miles in the shortest month. I’m still not sure how I ran more miles in February than I have since April. I guess my weekly 8 mile long runs, a few slightly longer weekday runs, and my long-ish run in Central Park added up and nudged me over that 70 mile mark.

Garmin Monthly Mileage DataMake plans to join the March Ultimate Coffee Date next weekend Deborah and I will open the (link-up) doors on Friday, and keep the coffee brewing all weekend.

Weekly Run Down

This week I was sort of back to my usual schedule, but on Monday I went running with a friend in town for a conference and on Wednesday I went running with my BRF from work, so those runs were a bit longer than my usual weekday runs with Scooby. I’m sure those few extra miles helped with my monthly total.

Monday: 5.4 miles
When Sary came to D.C. for this same conference a few years ago, I took her on a running tour of D.C. Because we started from my office this time we didn’t get to see the Iwo Jima memorial, but we saw the other highlights–the Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument, Jefferson Memorial, and Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial. Let me know if you come to town–I’d love to show you around!

Coco and SarySince she started doing dragon boating last year,
she enjoyed seeing the rowers out on the Potomac.

Tuesday: Cyclebar
I knew Aimee would lead a fun class on Mardis Gras, and I was right. The studio was decorated with masks and beads, and she even brought in a King Cake for post-ride refueling. 🙂

Wednesday: 5.75 miles
My BRF wants to make Wednesday morning runs a thing, and this was our second week in a row meeting up. To avoid a long light crossing 14th street we basically ran the same route I’d run with Sary on Monday, taking a slightly longer way back from the Tidal Basin.

It was too dark and foggy to get any good pictures of the monuments, but these gulls caught my attention when we got back to the Georgetown waterfront.

Thursday: Corepower yoga
Our peak pose was partridge–sort of like dancer’s pose in a side plank position. I don’t think I’ve ever tried it before, and was pleased when I could reach my foot behind me without falling over onto my face.

Friday: Orangetheory fitness Strength Workout
What’s worse than arriving at your 5:00 am OTF class only to find you’re still on the waiting list? Arriving at your 5:00 am OTF class and realizing you’re still wearing slip-on shoes!

selfie wearing slip on shoesI had put them on to carry my stuff out to my car,
and forgot to change into running shoes before leaving. 🙁

I checked in with the studio to let them know I couldn’t participate (they had pity on me and waived the late cancellation fee), and headed to my office gym for a strength workout. I’m glad I had that option for a “plan B”.

Saturday: 8.2 Scooby Miles
I’m not sure why I excepted 30F to feel warm, but the wind made it really cold instead! This gorgeous sunrise lured me into the Seminary Chapel Garden, which was aglow in the pink light.

makes the beauty of the space all the more poignant.

Sunday: Cyclebar
Cyclebar fit my schedule better than a bike ride, and Natalie led a fantastic class-the minutes flew by!

post-ride planking Now that Marcia’s plank challenge has ended,
I’m back to do plain-old-planks after my ride.

  1. Wow cannot believe there are enough crazy OTF people to have a waiting list at 5 am! Good for you all. I am glad to hear that you had such a stellar month of running. I am starting to see my mileage go up too and that makes me happy, Thanks for linkup up and see you for coffee this week

    • Coco says:

There’s a mix of people heading to work like me and moms getting it done before their kids get up. Looking forward to coffee!

  2. Your running tour of DC sounds so nice! I chuckled when I saw your post about the slip-on shoes at OTF because I almost did the same thing earlier this week but luckily had a pair of running shoes in my car 😉

  3. Wendy says:

Like you, I logged my most miles in a long time in February. Thank goodness for that extra day…

  4. Cari says:

I now have a Duane Reade sports bra in my desk from when I got to a Mile HIgh class without one. Socks too that I bought at the gym. Glad they waived your fee.
I don’t so much give running tours as show some my favorite running spots. Darlene and I usually run Central Park but twice she mentioned wanting to see places and I made it a destination-ish. Ish because we ran down to Battery Park but took the train to and walked back from the Little Red Lighthouse since neither of us wanted to run that day.
I keep saying I’m going to get to Iwo Jima — it’s not going to happen this trip either unless I do a shakeout run midday Friday. *grumble*
That seminary garden is a beautiful relic

  5. Darlene says:

I need a BRF to get me out the door in the am.

Kudos on a big running month.

I need to come run in DC. So many interesting places to see.

  6. Kim at Running on the Fly says:

I’d love a running tour of DC with you, even though I’ve see a lot of it via the Cherry Blossom and MCM 😉 I was just thinking last week…temps were just barely above freezing, but felt SOOOO much colder than they did in January LOL It’s like my mindset is programmed on Spring now, so any semblance of Winter is not acceptable.

  7. Catrina says:

I would definitely run with you if I was visiting your city! Does BRF stand for Best Running Friend?
I have worn the wrong shoes as well for my gym class! I have also managed to forget my towel, my hairbands, my contact lenses and my socks.

    • Coco says:

Yes, that’s what I meant by BRF. 😉 I have a lot of extra things in my office in case I forget something I need ^after^ my workout, but I don’t keep extra gear in my car!

  8. Oh I would love to be taken on a DC tour by you! My husband was in DC for a couple of nights in Summer of 2017 and went for a short run. He took a photo with the Washington Monument in the background. (Hope that’s the right name – the very tall narrow/thin structure).

    • Coco says:

Yes, that is the Washington Monument! There are so many great sights all runnably close together — it would be a great family trip. 😉

  9. Marcia says:

I’d love to take you up on a DC running tour! That scenery never gets old! I feel your pain on the shoes. I’ve done that at the gym and it sucks to not be able to workout. Ugh. You know you can always keep the fancy plank variations in your rotation…just saying…
I still need to open my prize closet so stay tuned.

  10. Chaitali says:

I expected Saturday to be warmer than it was too. That wind was tough! Great job on getting all those miles in February 🙂

  11. Hannah says:

I have forgotten to pack a sports bra before…I know some people would workout/run anyway, but I cannot. I also forget my Garmin about once every couple weeks, but at least that’s not essential.

  12. runswithpugs says:

I love that you offer running tours! So fun!

I once showed up to a group run with two left shoes. Whoops. Now I check and double check.

  13. runswithpugs says:

I love that you offer running tours! I would totally take you up on that.

I once showed up to a group run with two left shoes. Whoops. I check and double check my gear, now!

  14. Renée says:

looks like we need to organise a DC running tour for several of us..

I laughed at your slip on shoes 😀 I’ve totally gone to the gym wearing biking clothes when I was meant to go to bodypump… (wearing flip flops and only having biking shoes with me).

well done on your mega mileage for Feb espcially for all the work stress you had!

  15. Laetitia says:

yeah on a high mileage month!! I’m still laughing at the slip on shoes. I’m sure it wasn’t funny at the time though but now you can laugh at it 😉

  16. kookyrunner says:

Nice mileage last month! I think that it’s totally normal to forget something, especially for a 5am class. I’m glad that the studio waived the fee for you 🙂

    • Coco says:

My mistake was putting no the wrong shoes in the first place. When I put them on I told myself I would have to remember to change before I left, but then I didn’t ….

  17. Birchwood Pie says:

Yes the 8 milers will definitely pile up and leave you with a high mileage month;-) There’s something about winter that makes me want to work out a little more than other times of the year.

  18. Oh wow, a full 5am class? Kudos for you for getting to it, even if you didn’t get to go! Too early for me 🙂 Great job on the monthly miles and all of the workouts this week! I had a really high number of miles this month, which surprised me… 188! I had to check my math twice. But then again, I’m only running so the miles add up fast with marathon training.

  19. That’s great that you got in so many miles in February! I think when I used to take fitness classes after work there were times I forgot a sports bra or socks. Its so frustrating when that happens!
