August Runfessions

I missed out on July Runfessions because I was at Yellowstone, so I’ve got lots to runfess this month. It always feels good to bare my soles and take a deep cleansing breath before moving on to a new month. You can partake by linking up at Marcia’s Healthy Slice.

Runfessions
It’s also time for the Friday Five link up at Running On Happy and Fairytales and Fitness. And tomorrow Deborah and I will be hosting the September Ultimate Coffee Date –can you believe it?

August Runfessions

I runfess that I had a hard time finding my running mojo after our vacation. I got used to easing into the morning with coffee, breakfast, and hiking–in that order–and realized how much energy it takes to get up and out the door to get a run in before work.

Vacation Talk

Let me enjoy that Lake Yellowstone sunrise a bit longer ….

I runfess that I need to get my act together if I am going to do the Reston Perfect 10 at the end of September. I hoped thought we’d be out of town celebrating our anniversary, but it looks we’ll be doing something the next weekend instead. I haven’t run more than 8 miles since the Denver Colfax Half Marathon in May, and have only done a few 8-milers at that. I have been getting in regular short runs with Scooby, but those aren’t going to get me ready to run up all those hills without him pulling me along!

Scooby Miles
I runfess that my gym buddy continues to get under my skin. Lately she’s been staking a claim to the largest (accessible) shower and turning the water on while she’s working out!

Once I was sure she wasn’t in there
I went in and turned the water off!

I love having to step over and around her crap
–and all that is hers–to get ready.

I need to get over it, but I runfess, I haven’t figured out how to let it go.

Did you take a summer vacation?

How do cope with persistent rudeness?

  1. Wait, is your gym buddy your actual friend? Can you talk to her about it? I mean I guess if she sees your blog she will get the point. Now that I’m back at work, I shower at the gym from time to time. There’s not too many people in there. Definitely never saw a shower running without anyone in it! I would hate the wasting of the water.

    • Coco says:

Hah, no, she works somewhere else. We barely speak to each other. I call her my “buddy” because we usually are the only two people in the locker room in the mornings.

  2. Wendy says:

What’s with turning the water on before working out? Sorry, but that’s just so wasteful. Tough situation.

PS I have to runfess that I won’t be able to get together with you when you’re in Chicago–that’s our 30th anniversary weekend. Silly me, how could I forget that?

  3. Laurie says:

That whole staking out a shower thing gets under my skin too! You have nice showers in your gym, though. Way nicer than our rec center. One time, I put all of my stuff in the shower (shampoo, body wash, wash cloth, etc.), and decided that I had to pee. I went to the toilet (5 steps from the shower), peed, and by the time I came back, someone else was in the shower! Come ON! I had to reach in to get my stuff back so I could take a shower!

  4. pglooney says:

I have a hard time getting my mojo back after vacation.
That is incredibly rude of that person!

  5. Water is such a precious commodity where I am from so that last runfession really got to me! That’s so wasteful.

Every time I take a small break from running I also realise how much energy it actually takes to get running before work or even after a long day at work!

  6. Wow I can’t believe your “friend” does that w the shower that’s so rude! You always seem to be able to pull off those 10 milers without many long runs so my bet is on you! See you for coffee tomorrow

  7. Darlene says:

Every time I take more than a day off, it’s hard to get back into running.

You will do fine in your 10 miler.

I worked all summer but I did go away for 3 weekends and that helped.

  8. Marcia says:

Wow your “gym buddy” is a rude slob. You know I’d really struggle with that as well. Scooby is too cute and I love his new bowl. I’m in a mileage deficit too. I’m questioning my sanity for signing up for a marathon I know I’m not going to train well for. Thanks for linking!

    • Coco says:

You’ve got enough marathons under your belt to be able to pull it off. Plus you know cross-training helps more than some might think. At least that’s what I’m counting on.

  9. Organic Runner Mom says:

It can definitely be hard to find running mojo after a vacation. Mine has been missing for awhile but I’m getting it back! I can’t believe that woman. That certainly is very rude!

  10. Wow and I thought I had some winners at my gym! What’s with leaving the water running?!

I’m sure you’ll be fine for your 10 miler – maybe you can get Scooby a bib to help with the hills 😉

  11. Lesley says:

Is there a manager for the gym? I’d certainly say something about wasting all that water.

  12. kookyrunner says:

It’s always hard to get back into the swing of things after vacation so I know exactly what you mean about losing your running mojo.

You gym “buddy” would drive me nuts too! Turning on the water while working out it just so wasteful. All of that to ‘claim’ the shower? Craziness!

  13. That’s not just rude, that’s a terrible waste of water. Are the showers really that crowded?

I am pretty much almost never an early morning runner. I’m lucky that I don’t have to be! It’s tough! I’ve done it more this summer because of the dang heat.

    • Coco says:

There are only 3 showers, but there are usually only 1-3 of us in there at a time any way. She just wants to make sure she gets her favorite I guess.

  14. Wow your friend apparently thinks the dressing room (and shower) is HER domain. Has anyone reported her? I don’t go to a gym, so I don’t know the protocol….but that’s ridiculous with her claiming the shower & turning it on!

  15. WOW, I can’t believe she leaves the water running when she is not even in the locker room! That is SO wasteful and I think you should turn it off every single time!

When is your anniversary? Ours is also in September!

  16. Rachel says:

Oh wow. That shower bit would really make me mad. YIKES!!

  17. Cari says:

    Gorgeous sunrise!
I admit I take up more than my space at the gym, but the “Claiming” of the shower and wasting water is just too much. I don’t blame you

    • Coco says:

I think we all take up more space than we think we do, but she takes up ALL the space — strewing it all over one area while she is physically in another.

  18. angela@marathonsandmotivation.com says:

Wow! The shower thing is out of control!! I think I would mention it to the staff at the gym for sheerly just wasting water…not cool at all!!!

  19. So weird about the shower! What’s the purpose of leaving it on for so long before getting in there? I’m sure you will be able to do the 10 miler if you are used to doing 8!

  20. That sunrise looks SOOO gorgeous! I am sure it is hard to get back after seeing all that beautiful scenery too!
Wow, I would be really annoyed also if a person did that while I was trying to get ready!

I hope you have a great upcoming race! I bet you will crush it!

  21. runswithpugs says:

Who leaves the water running while working out? That’s so rude!

We do take a vacation in the summer, but it’s not necessarily a long or big one. There are a lot of cool day and weekend trips around here so we don’t always need to get away for a summer trip.

Persistent rudeness makes me very passive aggressive. I’ll be sweet as pie but with very veiled digs. I’ts probably not super mature but that’s how I roll.

    Good luck on your race!

    • Coco says:

I wish we were better about weekend getaways, but I usually want/need the downtime. Plus now that we have a dog again, it’s harder.

I tend to get passive aggressive too. There’s only so much I can take!

  22. Farrah says:

I used to be so good about working out before going to class when I was in college, but ever since grad school/med school/residency, I can’t bring myself to get up that early anymore, so I go afterward. x_x

I would be so annoyed if someone left a shower running before even starting the workout. That’s so so wasteful! :[
