A Cool Start To Summer Running

How long does our weather have to be crazy before crazy weather is normal? Earlier last week it was hot and humid–in the 90s. But on Friday–the day after the summer solstice– I got goosebumbs walking Scooby after dinner–it was in the 60s. I’m not complaining about cooler summer temperatures, but it’s hard to get accustomed to summer running when the temperature swings so wildly.

Weekly Wrap

This week I switched around my usual workout schedule to match changes in my favorite fitness instructors‘ schedules. Ann was out of town on Friday, so I took her CPY class on Tuesday instead. That means I missed Aimee’s Tuesday Cyclebar class, but I caught Francine’s class on Wednesday. I was going to take Brandon’s Orange Theory Class on Monday, but when he changed his schedule I got on the waiting list for his Friday class, and luckily got in.

Here’s my full recap for the Weekly Wrap link up hosted by Holly and Wendy.

Monday: 4. 3 Scooby Miles
After cycling Saturday and Sunday, I was ready for a run, and so was Scooby. He has plenty of energy for my full 4+ mile neighborhood loop.

Tuesday:  CPY2 at CorePower Yoga

This is the latest fitness class I take, ending at 7 while OTF ends at 6 and Cyclebar ends at 6:15. While I’m used to getting a later start at work on Fridays, it made me feel a bit out of sorts on a Tuesday. Maybe I could have cut short my post-shower, pre-work Starbucks time, but I think that would have made me feel even worse!

Wednesday:  Rhianna theme ride at Cyclebar

Thursday:  2.7 Scooby Miles + strength workout

summer running scooby miles

Friday: Orange Theory Fitness
The workouts this week had Dragon Boat theme with a focus on the rowing blocks, but Friday’s workout wasn’t too bad. Our longest row was 600M and we dropped 100M each time after that.

On the treadmill, I have to set the incline at 3% to get my heart rate up into the “orange” zone, but once it’s there I can drop down to 2% without my heart rate falling.

Saturday: 4.3 Scooby Miles + 4.2 solo miles
The Conte’s hill ride was rained out, but light drizzle was not enough to slow Scooby down. I took him out on my 4+ mile loop, and then did the loop again solo (in the other direction) .

Scooby runs faster in broad daylight–too fast, really. Our first mile split was 9:40, and the others were in the 8:30 range. I need to figure out how to train him to run at my pace.

Sunday:  40.45 mi bike ride
With summer weather coming back with a vengeance, we got an early start for our last ride before we do the 50 mile Farm To Fork Fondo ride next weekend–I think we’re ready!

Are you ready for summer weather?

Yes this weather is crazy. We had 90 degrees on Monday and then yesterday, I wanted to turn on our fireplace.

It looks like next weekend will be summer again. I love it for boating…racing not so much (and I have a 15k to run.)

  2. Liz Dexter says:

That’s interesting, I’ve never thought about dogs and people running at different paces when they try to run together!

  3. Scooby is quite the running dog!

Friday would have been a great day to run with Bandit but unfortunately there just wasn’t enough time. I don NOT have to worry about him running too fast for me, but he is about 10 after all. 🙂

  4. I was wondering if you all rode in the rain yesterday. I decided to do it since it was only misting and it was good practice. You do seem ready for the event next weekend. Can’t wait to hear about it. Have you done the Seagull century?

    • Coco says:

They cancelled Conte’s Friday night when the weather forecast was calling for storms. It might have been OK, but the roads were pretty wet. I know a few folks who liked Seagull, but I prefer hills to flat!

  5. Kim G says:

I heard that the weather was all over the place this week! I was in swampy NOLA where it was hot and humid every day, so very consistent, lol

Hooray for runs with Scooby! Seem like he loves running so far.

    • Coco says:

Yes, he really loves to trot along!

I guess consistent weather isn’t always a good thing, but it looks like you had fun!

  6. Very similar weather in Iowa. I was freezing on my walk Thursday morning, and that was with an extra layer. The weather has been so whacked in 2018 LOL

  7. Wendy says:

I’d agree with you that you are ready for Farm to Fork Fondo! Nice riding. I keep wanting to ride but we had all that rain last week and so nope, not happening. It’s been a wild weather ride this year!

  8. The weather is all over the place and I’m about ready to give up hoping to ever get acclimated! I am starting to think this is the new normal. It’s great that you’ve been able to get so many Scooby miles – goodness he’s fast!

  9. Scooby is such a cutie! How great that you have a dog you can run with!

  10. Teresa says:

Okay, so you need a personal assistant just to keep up with your fitness instructor’s schedules! Lol That Scooby is such a cutie …and very photogenic!

    • Coco says:

So true! I also need to remember to double-check for schedule changes in advance — if I really care that much. 😉

  11. Marcia says:

It seems like we have more crazy-weather years than not and this year is no exception. Dragon boat-themed rowing sounds very creative and fun!

    • Coco says:

I am impressed at the thought goes into the OTF theme weeks — even if some of the workouts feel cruel. 😉

  12. Yep, crazy weather here too! I took some time off after Grandma’s Marathon last weekend, but it’s time to get moving again. It’s supposed to get pretty hot here again today, so I’m heading out for a run soon, before it gets too bad.

  13. I couldn’t help but chuckle when I read “Scooby Miles” lol – I’m glad you guys are doing well together, he sure is fast!

Saturday’s chilly weather was so WEIRD – it felt nice but really threw me off. Figures we’ll be heading back up to the 90s later this week…

You’ve trained so hard for the Fondo – can’t wait to hear how it goes!

    • Coco says:

I’m really excited for the ride -and the food. It is supposed to be hot though, but hopefully cooler than here — which should be in the mid-90s.

  14. Lesley says:

I got home around 5:30 on Wednesday, which is about an hour late for me, since I had my chiropractor appointment. Since I normally eat dinner around 6, that day is always weird.

  15. Chaitali says:

I keep hearing that we had some extreme heat last week. I was in San Francisco and it was actually on the chilly side there.

  16. Scooby looks like a great running buddy! It’s already been summer down south. It’s way too hot!

  17. Renée says:

hey, what is a Rihanna Themed Ride? is that just spinning but with Rihanna songs? how does that work? I do RPM so I’m really used to doing a specific workout to specific songs, but I think that other types of spinning classes are different. (sorry for the dumb question – I’m really new to spinning/ RPM!)

I wonder if there are any dog running classes you and scooby could do to have him run more at your pace?

I had goosebumps too, coming home from training friday night – it was really chilly and we were on the bikes so by the time we went home (around 11pm!) we were nearly freezing!

It will be summer again this weekend for sure. This morning Summer hadn’t gotten the memo that it was supposed to be here, but by the time I left work, seems like the message was received loud and clear haha!

    • Coco says:

Yes, a theme ride is where most of the playlist is by selected artists. The instructors at Cyclebar have a lot of leeway with the choreography and music. Rhianna was a good one because she has such a variety of fat and slow songs to choose from.

Interesting idea on a dog running class. We probably should do basic obedience first.

  18. I am always ready for summer weather! I love summer

  19. Farrah says:

haha, I’m with you on the weather! It’s definitely been weird. Yay for Scooby miles, and hope you have fun at the Farm to Fork ride!! It definitely sounds like you’re ready!

  20. I love that Scooby gets in so many miles with you. Does he get Scooby snacks afterwards? I just had to ask..lol

  21. Laurie says:

Awww….loved seeing your Scooby pictures. I bet he will be a great running partner. Does the hot weather bother him?

    • Coco says:

He definitely seems to prefer running in the morning when it’s cooler — but so do I. We also need to be careful about hot pavement, although we run on (white) concrete sidewalks that are cooler than the black road or bike path.

  22. Jenn says:

Ha! We are ready for summer to go away! It’s absolutely oppressive outside and I can’t even handle it! My pace is miserably slow and these runs feel terrible. I know it will all work out come fall but I am over it!

  23. Cari says:

40 miles. WOW. I love your Scooby mile descriptions and I totally hear you on inability to acclimate

    • Coco says:

Scooby miles are fun but challenging – I have to pay attention to him and be on the lookout for squirrels, dogs, etc. that might get his attention!

  24. HoHo Runs says:

Scooby is becoming quite the runner! Good luck at your ride this weekend. I can’t wait to see the cycling jersey! They always seem to have such a great one. The weather…it’s almost intolerable. Triple digit indexes all week. Thanks for linking!

    • Coco says:

My husband checked out the jersey on-line and warned me that he wants the full kit! I guess that’s where my ambassador earnings will be going. 😉

  25. The weather has certainly been quite the roller coaster lately. I’m trying to take advantage of this nicer weather as much as I can and spend as much time outside as possible. Before we know it it’ll be super hot and humid again.

  26. Esther says:

Our summer weather has been all over the place! 100s and then dropping into the 70s.
Looks like you had a great week of workouts!
