My husband and I were tag-teaming it last week with alternating business trips, so I didn’t have to cook dinner until Friday. Still, I went to the grocery store to pick up a few essentials that we couldn’t do without even for a few days.
Produce
- apples
- bananas
- oranges
- seasonal fruit (berries, melon, mangoes)
- salad mix
- tomatoes
Dry Goods
- coffee (Starbucks ground dark coffee)
- whole grain bread
- cereal (usually Cheerios, Frosted Mini Wheats, or Raisin Bran)
- pasta
- brown rice
- canned tomato sauce, crushed tomatoes, diced tomatoes and tomato paste
- canned tuna
- canned beans (black, kidney, chickpeas)
- whole grain crackers (usually Triscuits)
- tortilla chips
Dairy
- half & half
- 1% milk
- eggs (I am shamelessly hooked on those pre-cooked Eggland’s Best eggs!)
- thin-sliced Havarti cheese
- yogurt
Meat/Deli
- lean ground beef (usually ends up in tacos or pasta sauce)
- boneless chicken breasts (for stir-fry or fajitas)
- frozen shrimp
- deli ham (for sandwiches)
Frozen
- Frozen veggies (broccoli florets, stir-fry mix, spinach, edamame)
- Frozen entrees (Lean Cuisine, Amy’s)
- Frozen turkey meatballs
- Klondike No-Sugar Added Ice Cream Bars
Of course, if I’ve planned ahead and selected some dinner recipes to make, there will be more on my list, but these are the items I generally keep on hand and usually manage to cobble together for dinner.
[Tweet “Grocery Store Staples”]
Do you tend to buy the same grocery items every week?
What are your top three grocery store staples?
I do get the same staples every week, but always a few new things for new recipe creation and what not! But my definite must-get staples are almond milk, apples, greens, and potatoes!
I have never seen those precooked eggs! But then again, I don’t like hardboiled eggs, so they wouldn’t really appeal to me. My go to staples are Chobani greek yogurt, gluten free granola, fruit, veggies!
your staples look pretty darn similar to mine!
I do buy the same things over and over again too. Lots of yours are mine but in the warmer months I always have cilantro, limes, lemon, jalapenos and chipotle peppers. I can add those to anything. I make my own salsa very week.
I swear that I go to the store for my basics and leave spending $100 and then feel like I have to go back. Now that it’s summer and my family is actually having dinner together most night, I need to start planning more.
I love Honey Nut Cheerios! They’re my husband’s cereal but every once in a while I’ll find myself reaching for a bowl!
My essentials are almond milk, mushrooms and onions! I can whip up any meal if I have the last 2 on hand. Cheap & flavorful!
I love how you cropped your junk food selections out of the pic. You can’t fool me, woman! I ‘done told you this already.
I try to only do a big grocery shopping trip about every 3 weeks (just small pick-ups in between). I keep my pantry pretty well stocked (my twin always makes fun of me but I can always throw something together for dinner!!!) so it is just a matter of adding things to the list as we run low.
