This Is What A PR Looks Like

There are so many things I love about the GW Parkway Classic–the race is well-organized, the course is lovely, and Port City sponsors their beer garden. 😉 For the past few years, they’ve also had FREE race photos from Swim Bike Run Photo–what’s not to love about that? Well, I’ve learned that just because a race photo is free doesn’t mean I will want it.

When I first saw my photos for the 2015 GW Parkway Classic, I didn’t like them. I decided that they weren’t even worth downloading and closed the browser window.

But then I realized that they capture what a PR looks like. I shared in my race recaps that I worked hard for my recent PRs, and these pictures reflect that effort.

Instead of wishing that I had more flattering race photos, I need to remember that it’s those tough moments that lead to these big smiles.

Happy Mother’s Day

Happy Mother's Day

I think my husband wanted to the flowers to match the vase. 😀

I’ve been feeling pretty down about my mothering recently. Partly because I fell into the Facebook comparison trap, partly because my kids really aren’t kids anymore, and partly because I know I am not the most warm, fuzzy, fun Mom. But I spent yesterday morning helping my daughter format her last big college assignment and I’m having brunch with my son today, so I’m feeling very good enough about the Mom that I am.  Continue reading

Essential Ingredients For A Good Day

You probably know the ingredients for your favorite recipe, but do you know the ingredients for a good day? Kris got me thinking about this when she shared some of the elements of her best days–days when she felt energized and contented.

Ingredients For My Ideal Day

I realized that if I could identify what makes a day a good day, I could be more intentional about making sure that I follow that recipe, and might even end up with more happiness in my life.  Continue reading

Sauteed Swiss Chard With Eggs

While I am pleased with my humble little herb plants, I am grateful that my Mom has a real green thumb and shares the bounty of her vegetable garden. Last weekend she brought me bunches of Swiss chard, which sent me hunting for a simple sauteed Swiss chard recipe. It made a good side dish for dinner, but it was even better when I made sauteed Swiss chard with eggs for breakfast.

I found this recipe for sauteed Swiss chard that met my requirement for being simple, and it also sounded like it would be flavorful. I used half the amount of olive oil, but that still seemed like a lot. I used the full amount of red pepper flakes, but that was too much for my tastes. If I make it again I will halve the amount of that too.

Fear Of Missing Out

If you’re a social media junkie like I am, you probably have heard of FOMO — the fear of missing out that comes from seeing how much fun others are having (or seem to be having) based on the pictures they are sharing on Facebook/Twitter/Instagram.

Fear Of Missing Out
I’ve also heard FOMO used in the context of fear of missing out on IMPORTANT! updates if you don’t check your social media accounts every second, but I’ve got too much going on in my own life to stay up-to-the-second up-to-date on what my friends are doing. 😉

Although I’ve learned that I am not totally immune to the Facebook comparison trap, I don’t get jealous when I see friends’ vacation pictures or the fantastic dinner or dessert they are enjoying–I enjoy living vicariously once in a while. But, there is one thing I hate to miss out on–sunrises.

At first it was my schedule that had me running at o’dark-thirty in the morning. But now I love starting my run before dawn, and being outside as the sky lightens.

Even a morning that starts out cloudy can put on a pretty show at sunrise.

Tidal Basin SunriseNow that it is getting lighter earlier,
I have to get up even earlier to catch the sunrise,
but it’s worth it.

Washington Monument Sunrise

I do sleep in every once in a while. Although the view out my bedroom window isn’t too shabby, I usually feel a twinge of disappointment that I’m not outside enjoying the sunrise in all its glory.

Sunrise At Home

Sunrises seem like a silly thing to fear missing, since there’s always going to be another one tomorrow, but I’m still keeping my alarm set for 5:00 am.
