Good News, Bad News

Last week was a bit of a roller coaster with good news and bad news, but it all worked out well in the end.Vaccination Day Bitmoji

Good News, Bad News

First, the good news.

Good news:  After all my whining, I got the notification I’ve been waiting for — I could make an appointment for a covid-19 vaccination! My bad habit of checking my email first thing in the morning paid off. I saw that email from the City of Alexandria Health Department, immediately logged into another site to look for appointments, and snagged an appointment for later the same day! My second appointment is scheduled for the first week of May, so I should be as fully protected as possible by Memorial Day–Woohoo!

Bad news: The worst news of the week actually happened last Sunday. My Mom fell and broke her shoulder. After spending 6 hours in the ER, she was discharged with a cheap sling and orders to call an orthopedist in the morning.

Good news: The practice the hospital referred her to didn’t have appointments for weeks (!), but she was able to get an appointment at the practice I went to for my fractured hand.  The orthopedist gave her the best news of the week–she does not need surgery! She’s supposed to let it start healing and then start physical therapy.

Bad news: In the meantime, she can’t use her right arm much at all.

Good news: She’s staying with us while she recovers–working from home makes it easy to be “on call”–and we’ve got plenty of room and wi-fi bandwidth. 🙂

Weekly Wrap

The warm weather this week made it really hard to take it easy on my Achilles–I really wanted to run! In more good news, it does seem to be getting better. The calf raises, stretching and foam rolling are paying off.

Monday: Core + 4.85  Scooby Miles

Scooby Looking Up at squirrels

Oooh–a squirrel!

Tuesday: Core +  30 min Ride + 20 min FB Strength
This “Greatest Showman” ride is very popular, and now I know why. It’s such a fun soundtrack.

Pelton Workouts

Wednesday: Core + 5.66 Scooby Miles + 10 min Arms (light weights)
I didn’t mean to run this long, but the weather was great and it just felt so good to be outside running.

Thursday: Core + 3.25 Scooby Miles + 20 min Strength for Runners
I was worried about running 3 days in a row, but my Achilles felt good and the weather was just perfect–in the mid 50s!Scooby SelfieFriday: Core + 25 min Strength + 20 min Ride
My motivation for indoor cycling is low, but after I had done three short strength workouts there was no denying I still had time for a short ride. CDE’s 80’s rides always have a great playlist, and she pushes me hard enough to get legitimately sweaty in 20 minutes.

Peloton Workouts

Saturday:  Core + 6.5 Scooby Miles
Since I no longer have any spring race plans, I can do the sensible thing and keep my long runs short while my Achilles improves. It was in the mid-50s but so humid (enough to be misty) I actually welcomed the cool breezes when they came along. Too soon, Mother Nature, too soon!

Scooby selfieI loved this pink dogwood!

Sunday: 3.3 Scooby Miles + 30 min Strength for Runners + 24 mile Ride
It was in the low 60s and so humid when we headed out at 6:30. I hope we get more spring weather before we roll into summer!

Scooby selfie with flagAfter breakfast and my weekly trip to the grocery store, we headed out for what felt like a steamy ride. Really, it was lovely, but I absolutely needed that ice in my bottle.

A rollercoaster week for sure! Sorry again about your mom. Yes to being vaccinated! I still cannot believe I scored one and I’m glad you did as well. I will not be returning to the gym though. There’s really no need now that I have a nice spin bike. I suppose the pool would be the only lure.

    • Coco says:

Yay on getting vaccinated! I have some credits sitting on my Cyclebar account, so I am going to see if I like the classes enough to keep going for a bit.

  2. Cari says:

I love your & Scooby’s MOnday facial expressions.
So glad your mom & your achilles are on the mend. Space & wifi, who knew those would become priorities in tandem. I love my apartment and my neighborhood, but there are times I’d seriously consider moving for an extra closet.
Yay for vaccines. I originally hoped to be fully vaccinated for fall but it’s so nice that there might be a normal-ish summer.
I don’t know if I’ll go back to the gym. Would be nice to have more weights to work with for Peloton classes, but is that enough of a reason?

    • Coco says:

Scooby was cracking me up! I am very excited about being vaccinated and be able to go out to eat, and sit outside and people watch!

  3. Darlene S. Cardillo says:

    Yay for the vaccine.

Hope your Achilles behaves. And your mom heals quickly.

  4. That’s kind of what happened to me, I whine like nobody’s business & the next thing I knew vaccine 1 was done.

Glad your mom is recuperating well at your house!

It was very humid here today. Not terribly hot, but this is the first really humid day we’ve had.

My vaccine seems to have reactivated my Achilles (slightly). But everyone is different so hopefully that won’t be the case for you (and may be manufacturer dependent).

  5. Lisa says:

So sorry about your mom! Glad she doesn’t need surgery and can stay with you. Yay for getting the vaccine! The warmer weather definitely makes it tempting to run more.

  6. I don’t see myself ever going back to a studio class. I am loving all things Peloton as you know. The weather this week had me running a few extra miles as well. I have to take advantage before the steamy summer rolls in. Glad you mom is doing ok sounds like she has a great nurse

    • Coco says:

Once I have to go back to the office, I’ll have the commuting incentive again — assuming my office gym locker room opens too ….

  7. Birchwood Pie says:

YES!!! So happy that you got your V card!!! It amazing how the tide has turned. I’m glad that you can have your mom with you and I hope that she will heal up quick.

  8. Wendy says:

Awww, your poor mom! She’s lucky to have you to take care of her. I hope she heals quickly. Nice week of running for you. And glad to hear you got your first shot!

  9. So glad you got your vaccine. I’m still over here trying to patiently wait my turn. On the good side, my husband has an appointment for Friday!

It’s great news that your mom doesn’t need surgery! I hope she heals quickly!

    • Coco says:

Thinks are ramping up quickly here. I hope your turn comes soon!

Thanks for the well wishes. She is making progress.

  10. jenny says:

Ugh, your poor mom!!! I’m glad she’s with you while she’s healing up. And, yay! You got your shot! It sounds like you didn’t have any weird after-effects, so that’s good.
I’m glad your achilles is feeling good- I hope you have a great week of running!

  11. therightfits says:

Sorry to hear about your mom’s fall, but glad she doesn’t need surgery! That’s crazy how booked some practices are…I tried to get into a dermatologist last month and couldn’t get an appointment until May!

I’m glad the self rehab is working on the achilles. Mine is ‘saying hello’ lately with my increased mileage, so definitely using the Theragun a lot on the calves.

    • Coco says:

Ugh on the dermatologist. By then you hope it’s nothing to be worried about!

I’ve been thinking of your Achillies rehab. The PT said it usually responds well to load, so I’m doing a few exercises for it.

  12. I’ve been thinking of your mom; it’s great that she has an awesome on-call attendant 😉 We got word late last week that our employer was hosting an on-site vaccination clinic for employees and their families. Yay! That’s the good news…the bad news is it’s two days before my half marathon LOL Glad to hear the Achilles is feeling better!!!

    • Coco says:

Thanks for the good thoughts! I know everyone is different, but my arm was barely sore the day of my vaccine (Pfizer) and it certainly would not have impacted my running. I’d be more concerned about the second dose, but probably would make the vaccination my priority — any side effects would just make for a more interesting race recap. 😉

  13. That is great about the vaccine! How is your mom doing?

  14. run.laugh.eat pie says:

I was so sorry to hear about your mom’s fall :(. glad you are able to accommodate and take care of her while she is recovering!!

Good news on the vaccination though. and as you know my turn is no where on the horizon so far… I would love studios to open and the curfew to be lifted so I could at least go to the indoor rowing class. I am missing other classes too but just keeping to my home workouts for now.

  15. runswithpugs says:

Oh, I’m so sorry about your mom! Not needing surgery is a great thing, and I hope she heals quickly.

We will be fully vaccinated next week and I can’t wait!

I don’t love anything indoors right now, so studio classes are a ways off. 🙁

  16. Hooray for the vaccines making their way around! Sorry about your mom, but so great you can help her out. I’m sure it will be nice to have her close by for awhile!
