Recovering Runfessions

On Wednesday I shared my thoughts on the confession my church is using during Lent, but now it’s time to share my February runfessions. Even though I’m still recovering from my fall, I’m ready to cleanse my soul soles at Marcia’s runfessional.

Also join me in the Fit Five Friday Link-Up with DarleneMichelle, Renée, Jenn, and Zenaida.

Deborah and I will be hosting the March Ultimate Coffee Date next weekend. We’ll open the (link-up) doors Friday March 5th, and keep the coffee brewing.

Recovering Runfessions

When I went to the orthopedist to get my hand checked (4 weeks after my fall), I wasn’t expecting to learn it was fractured. I made the appointment “just in case” because I didn’t want to risk ignoring a problem that needed medical attention to heal properly—there are so many small and important bones in your hand!  Yet, I runfess that in the two weeks since my appointment I have yet to do any of the physical therapy exercises the doctor gave me. If you think PT exercises for running injuries are tedious ….

I runfess that while I never chose a “real” race for the swag, that’s the only reason I’d sign up for a virtual race—like the Scooby Doo Virtual Run that seemed like it was made just for Scooby and me. I took that one step further by signing up for the (free) MRTT/SRTT 10th Anniversary Virtual Run just to have access to the ($16) tank top.

I’m sure I’ll run the race distance and log my run sometime in March, but I mostly want to support this organization that totally changed my running life when I discovered it a few years ago.

My last runfession is more of a PSA. Since I’ve been working out at home, I’ve gotten lazy about my water bottle hygiene. If I accidentally leave it in my “gym,” I’ll use it the next day without hesitation. If I don’t drink very much, I’ll stash it in the fridge for the next day.

I wonder what bacteria thrive on Nuun?

Well, all that came to an end a few weeks ago. I was washing out my water bottle after a workout, when I noticed a quarter-sized raft of black film floating inside. OMG, I had just used it! Luckily I didn’t get sick, but now my water bottle goes in the dishwasher after every.single.use.

Are you scrupulous about your home gym hygiene?

Oh yikes on the water bottle! I usually stick to water at home and with water I runfess I’m not as careful as I would be if I had Nuun in there. I can never get water bottles especially the nozzles to be as clean as I’d like them. Thanks for linking!

  2. Darlene S. Cardillo says:

Yikes. I don’t wash my bottle water. I runfess I drink so little I don’t have to fill it often.

I bet if you couldn’t run you do those PT exercises. Priority.

Of course you have to do a Scooby race. It’s why I ran a Bernie 5k.

  3. Laurie says:

Yikes!!! Thanks for the PSA. I am going to share it with my hubby. His water bottle hygiene is not always what it should be.

And you definitely need to run that Scooby race with Scooby!sounds like a match made in heaven. Please post a picture of the swag!

  4. Nope, I rarely wash my water bottle! Hey, we need some germs to keep us healthy. Although seriously, thankfully, mine hasn’t been that bad — even though I am forever forgetting it downstairs on the treadmill.

I have done those sorts of hand exercises for elbow tendinitis When it really hurts, you’ll do most anything right? It definitely worked in my case. You want that fracture to heal up well and be strong in that wrist, right? Just sayin’!

Obviously I have been known to sign up for a virtual that is either a cause that calls to me or swag I actually really like. Win-win for both!.

  5. I am scrupulous about gym hygiene I wipe down my bike after every use. I have always thought plastic water bottles were a breeding ground for bacteria. I runfess, I still use disposable water bottles for my workouts. Yup I am a hazzard to the environment! Hope you hand is feeling better!

  6. Suddenly I feel the need to clean my equipment AND my water bottles!!!

I hope you’ll be doing your PT for your hand from now on, young lady…

I love the tank for the virtual race. Always good to support organizations that mean so much to you too.

Yikes about the water bottle! I usually always finish my water so I end up rinsing it out before using it again. but it’s a good thing you were able to catch that now so that it doesn’t happen again!

  8. Jenny says:

Ha… maybe having everyone scold you here will motivate you to do those hand exercises! I agree… it does sound tedious.
Yep… water bottles can get really gross. REALLY gross.

  9. Ugh now I really feel the need to re-examine (and clean!) my water bottles!

Those PT exercises may be tedious – but they’re necessary, right? Gotta keep you on the healing path 😉

  10. Kim at Running on the Fly says:

Busted. I don’t clean my water bottle each time, but I do stash it in the fridge if there’s more than half remaining. It does get cleaned periodically, though. That’s a great runfession LOL…now I need to take a wipe to the bike & elliptical, they’re probably due for a good cleanse.

  11. Birchwood Pie says:

I runfess that I haven’t signed up for a virtual race for the swag YET but I joined two distance challenges for that reason. I am terrible on water bottle hygiene.

  12. Lisa says:

I am not great about cleaning my water bottle either! I do keep it in the fridge between workouts. I broke my finger a few years ago and remember getting exercises to do. They were pretty simple and I could do them throughout the day without any equipment.

  13. runswithpugs says:

Your poor hand! I can understand not wanting to do those workouts. They are sooooo boring.

I do wash out water bottles and cups fairly regularly. They just go right in the dishwasher.

  14. I use my water bottle a lot so I make sure to wash it often. I’ve also been remembering to wipe down the Peloton after each ride.

  15. Denise says:

I use stainless steel (hydro flask) water bottles which stay cleaner but I wash them every few days, unless I put a sports drink in them then I empty and wash the same day. I don’t use bottles with a straw or spout because I’m afraid of what’s in them and I’m too lazy to wash daily.
Of course you have to run that race!

  16. Janelle @ Run With No Regrets says:

How many of us have those diagrams from PT with exercises that we will rarely do? LOL I can so relate! And I’m glad you didn’t get sick from your water bottle! I’ve been trying to be mindful of that just since Baby E likes to walk around with my bottle and she’s been catching colds so easily.

  17. Cari says:

Water bottles skeeve me out and have since softball and soccer days. Also the taste of straws that never properly get clean after a flavored drink in them, whether sugared or not. I’m using my Zaki at home, but use way too many disposables on the run.
