Thankful Runfessions

This November has been a wild ride. I’m so grateful I’ve had running to help burn off the stress, and am always grateful for opportunity to cleanse my soul at the runfessional hosted at Marcia’s Healthy Slice.

Happy ThanksgivingThanks to Lacey and Miranda for the Fairytales and Fitness Friday Five link up.

Deborah and I will be hosting the December Ultimate Coffee Date next weekend. We’ll open the (link-up) doors Friday December 4th, and keep the coffee brewing.

Thankful Runfessions

I runfess that I have no interest in Black Friday shopping this year, so I’m going to keep celebrating Thanksgiving with my runfessions. This year has been so hard in so many ways, but I still have things to be thankful for–many of them running-related.

I thankfully runfess that I am in better health this Thanksgiving than last, thanks to the care of my endocrinologist and effective thyroid medication. Running really sucked last year before I was diagnosed and treated. I am so glad I didn’t have to face the challenges of 2020 without being able to enjoy running.

I have no idea what this Garmin data is based on, but I thankfully runfess that I feel like I am in the best running shape of my life. That may be easy to say with no races to test my performance, but with nearly daily 3 mile runs with Scooby, interval workouts on the treadmill, and long runs that can feel effortless after a rest day, I don’t really need more proof.

Garmin Status

Much better than my detraining in 2019

Speaking of Scooby, I thankfully runfess that he is the best running buddy I’ve ever had. He’s always up for a run, and even nudges me out the door with impatient grumbling if I’m wavering. I could do without so many random stops and squirrel sprints, but he never complains when I stop to take a picture or make him pose for a post-run selfie.

I thankfully runfess that the Peloton app has been another sanity-saver this year, even if it led me to adding a bike to my home exercise equipment.

Schwinn IC4 Bike

Yes, I keep my Tiems locked and loaded.

With the Peloton app, I’ve added core workouts to my daily routine and running-focused strength workouts to my weekly routine, and I’ve been inspired to stretch more regularly. I think all of these small changes have been adding up and paying off in my running, cycling, and general well-being.

Are there any Black Friday sales I should be tempted by?

  1. I’m not really thinking of Black Friday shopping either. I have too many Hawkeye sporting events to watch LOL

    • Coco says:

Hah, those are good priorities! I had to work some today, but just enough to keep e from buying too much for myself on-line. 😉

  2. Catrina says:

Yay on the Garmin verdict on your training status!!
No wonder, you have a great fitness routine with a perfect balance of strength, cardio and getting outdoors with Scooby. The guys at Peloton seem to know what they are doing!

    • Coco says:

Peloton isn’t for everyone, but it sure offers a lot to choose from. Scooby is becoming a spoiled brat and grumbling at me if I take too long getting ready for a run — at least I know he really enjoys it.

  3. Wendy says:

I think a lot of us are having a great year of fitness! Or, judging by my patients, not so much… I’ve had a great year of running and lifting. I hope to ride the wave into 2021. The blue wave, that is! 😛

    • Coco says:

I’ve spent most of the time I gained by not commuting on more exercising, but I’m not dealing with kids at home. LOL on the blue wave!

  4. Marcia says:

That’s awesome you’ve comeback to peak fitness so nicely since your thyroid issue last year. I’d say that’s true for a lot of us, but I see many many people I coach who’ve been completely thrown off their game in that respect this year. Thanks for linking!

    • Coco says:

I know I’m fortunate that I’ve been able to work at home, and my kids are grown so we’re not dealing with virtual school, so I’ve been able to stretch my morning workout time.

I’ve seen some great Black Friday deals online, but I don’t anticipate doing too much shopping this year.

I love that Scooby is such a great run partner. I’m sure it makes those Peloton runs more exciting too 🙂

    • Coco says:

I don’t like browsing-type shopping on line. I really like going to small shops to find cute gifts but I’m not sure I want to do that this year.

The raccoon we saw yesterday made that run VERY exciting. Do you know they chirp when they are excited?

  6. I did all of my shopping early really. I have checked out a few things but can’t really find them on sale. I would say I am in much better running shape now and I have completely changed my diet the past 2 months which has made a huge difference. Hope to continue to run pain free in 2021

  7. Darlene says:

I need a Scooby to get me outside in the morning.

I’ve been hiking and walking too much. My running fitness has died. At least speed wise. Since we are not racing (or real racing), it doesn’t really matter to me.

That bike is looking awfully appealing as winter looms.

  8. Birchwood Pie says:

I runfess that I am very tempted by the sale on Brooks Launch BUT I honestly don’t need another pair of shoes right now so I am going to pass. I don’t run with my dog, but both she and I have appreciated the bonus lunchtime walks that have come as a side effect of the pandemic.

    • Coco says:

I don’t need running shoes yet either, so I am ignoring the running store sales. We tried not to change Scooby’s schedule too much, but we do take him out mid-afternoon now.

  9. Michelle D. says:

I think it’s awesome that Scooby has become such a great running partner. You two have logged some great miles together this year.

I’m so glad you’re feeling better overall! The Peloton app has inspired me in so many ways too and I’m grateful to running pain free again!

    • Coco says:

I think what’s enticing about the app is those short classes — it’s like a gateway drug that lure me in for “one more” class.

  10. Laurie says:

You do have a lot to be thankful for! I am even more thankful for running this year too. What would we do without being able to get out and run off the crazies? So glad your running is going so well. Your Garmin backs up what you already know.

  11. Funny, in some ways I feel like I’m not in as great shape — well, really, I know i’m not. Not for lack of trying. Just too much stress for too long, I guess. I am definitely grateful for the Peloton app, too, even if I don’t use it anywhere near as much as you.

I just didn’t enjoy running with Bandit. Maybe if we hadn’t started when he was 8 . . .maybe if I could train up dog from a young age. Glad that you have such a great partner! Even more important these days.

I was at my mom today, but there are a few deals I’m still probably shopping probably — a training I’ve wanted to do for a long time is 40% off, although I think I have a little more time to sign up for that but it’s a good deal.

    • Coco says:

You’ve had a lot to deal with this year. I’ve basically taken my non-commuting time and divided it between sleeping more and exercising more. 😉

      • More sleep is an awesome thing. 🙂

It has been a rough year — on top of a previously rough year — but on the whole I’m pretty darn lucky. Sometimes I just have to remind myself of that!

  12. runswithpugs says:

I didn’t really pay much attention to BF sales. Nothing I wanted or needed was on sale and I don’t shop just to shop.

Scooby is truly the best! I would love to meet him <3 And I'm so glad you're in such good health.

  13. Found this really interesting, thanks for sharing!
