April showers usually bring May flowers, but in this corner of the blogosphere we have Marcia’s postponed April Runfessions link up bringing us into the May Ultimate Coffee Date. You also won’t want to miss the Friday Five link up at Fairytales and Fitness.

May Ultimate Coffee Date

If we were having coffee, I would tell you that I am not loving the shirt for the GW Parkway Classic. It’s not horrible, but the color and logo make me think of a diving flag, not a scenic race along the Potomac River from Mt. Vernon to Old Town. I’m not in love with the medal either. I think they took “simple design” too far on both of them!

Celebrating the 35th running of the Parkway Classic

If we were having coffee, I would admit that the new Starbucks rewards program has me redeeming my points on pastries instead of saving them for coffee drinks.

Starbucks Rewards Program

Their double chocolate brownie is my all-time favorite brownie, and the iced lemon pound cake is so good. Good thing it takes me a while to earn those 50 stars.

If we were having coffee, I would tell you I was very disappointed to learn that although my city encourages us to include glass in our curbside recycling, it has been separating it from other recyclables and sending it to a landfill. I feel so betrayed! Now the city says if we take glass to a recycling center it will be used to make gravel that will be used locally. It’s a pain in the ass, but I’ll probably do it for items that are easy to clean.

If we were having coffee, I would ask if you’ve made any summer vacation plans?

I want to go to the beach, but my husband wants to rent a house so we can bring Scooby. That makes things more complicated–and means we can’t wait much longer to nail down dates and find and reserve a place.

Glass to the landfill? That just seems wrong to me–I always thought glass was one of the more easily recycled items!

    Thanks for coffee!

  2. Kim at Running on the Fly says:

Our town’s recycling is slowly phasing out, and that has myself (and a LOT of the residents) annoyed. For several months (maybe the past year?), we’ve had to separate out the glass ourselves and take it to a specific place (instead of leaving it curbside in the bin). Yeah, total pain in the buttocks!!!!

    • Coco says:

That’s what we have to do know if we want our glass recycled, but that’s not what they say in the recycling guide (above)!

  3. Marcia says:

Wait no glass?? That disturbs me. I mean come on! Diving shirt you crack me up! Did you see the Paris Marathon medal? Speaking of simple design. Taking Scooby sounds fun but I agree with you it complicates things. When we got Ozzy we were hoping for a dog small enough to travel easily. Let’s just say he is not that dog. Haha!

  4. kookyrunner says:

I agree with you on the race shirt! I love the color and the design is nice and simple. That’s a race shirt I would actually wear.

Hmm, that’s a bummer about the recycling. I need to actually look to see what my city does. Today they are implementing a plastic bag ban which I’m so thrilled about! It will now forces people to use reusable bags.

  5. Recycling is such a tricky thing. You definitely want to do the right thing. Typically we don’t have to much garbage, but lots of recycling (just as bad, no doubt).

We haven’t really traveled with Bandit, except once, which was actually really a nightmare. We’ve traveled with Lola many times. What my husband doesn’t get is that it’s not really a vacation for me if we take the dogs (even if it’s sort of comforting) — cause seriously, he just doesn’t help much.

This week he’s been on dog feeding (until today) and dog walking (still) duty, but I still actually have to remind him to do it and half the time he’s just lost in what he wants to do & makes the poor dogs wait forever. So when we go on vacation — yeah, most of it falls to me.

  7. Cari says:

    Recycling regulations are so confusing!
I’d managed to stay out of Starbucks for a while until this week so I’d forgotten about the rewards changes. I used mine on soy and that just made me miss the days when soy was free for gold members.
Thanks for the reminder that I really need to do the GW Parkway run one year

  8. Laurie says:

Our trash pick up occurs at about 3:00 a.m. We carefully rinse all allowable items and place them in the recycle bin, separate from the trash receptacle. Imagine my surprise when, one week when I was awake and watching while the trash men picked up our trash, everything was dumped in the same place!

It’s so disappointing when I don’t like a race shirt. That one would go in the donate pile for sure.

  9. I’d really hate to know what happens to our recycling here in Chicago.

I kind of like the simple race shirt! The one from my recent NJ half is really nice but kind of a funny green. It’s very light material and will be good for summer!

I use my Starbucks points for breakfast sandwiches!

  10. I just saw a news story on how the recycling regulations are getting so complicated that a lot of places are just doing away with it all together. So disappointing!

My husband and I talked about renting a house at the beach too and he wants to bring our dog. I think it will be fun if I can pull off finding a place – and that’s such a big if! Good luck with your plans!

    • Coco says:

I’m finding we’ll have to get a much bigger house than we would need for the two – er, three – of us.

  11. Renée says:

it DOES look like a diving flag! and as soon as you said that I thought of Van Halen’s album Diver Down. I’ll have to give that a listen to now! ha!

my LEAST favorite race shirtS – plural – the first year I did RnR Liverpool and the first year I did RnR Dublin. The quality was AWFUL and the design almost as bad. They were extremely ill-fitting and not breathable at all. I got rid of both of them. Thankfully we started getting the Brooks shirts over here in Europe the next year.

We do have summer plans 🙂 I actually talk about all our plans on the coffee date post 🙂 I do think your husband is right though – why not get a place at the beach? that would solve the issue, no?

    • Coco says:

an ill-fitting shirt is the worst – they go right into the “maybe I’ll get a t-shirt quilt made someday” pile. 🙂

  12. I guess the GW Parkway Classic Race people took ‘classic’ to heart. I agree, very basic on both. We head to Puerto Vallarta in three weeks. I can’t wait.

  13. I do try to recycle but I am never sure if I am doing it quite right but I try. I am annoyed about the whole straw situation bc I don’t think the paper ones work well. Yes we do have big vacation plans coming up!

    • Coco says:

I don’t mind the paper straws, but I only use them for water. I can see how they would be a struggle with smoothies. Glad your plans are working out!

  14. Janelle @ Run With No Regrets says:

I have a few race shirts that I really don’t like but can’t seem to give away. Some of the Rock ‘n Roll designs are a dud, but I don’t think your Parkway Classic shirt is too bad!

We’re spending a couple of weeks in Europe in August, I’m so excited!

    • Coco says:

I think I am coming to like the shirt objectively, just not as representative of this race. A European vacation sounds great!

  15. Farrah says:

Super sad…I was 2 points away from making it to Gold for Starbucks Rewards via strategic use of the star bonuses and then it all reset before I had a chance to buy something for 2 bucks to secure it, hahaha.

Sorry to hear about the recycling thing! I’m glad they’ll at least recycle it though! I’ve heard of a lot of places that have just given up. :[

    • Coco says:

Oh, I didn’t realize they did away with (or reset?) Gold Star program. I’ve had that for years. 😉

  16. runswithpugs says:

That is awful about the landfill! Come on!

I don’t use Sbux rewards at all, but DD’s program is a great one for me!

Our vacation plans are mostly set! Our big trip is a New England “road trip”. We’ll fly into Maine and then rent a car to explore Acadia National Park, Boston, Cape Cod and the coastal highway.

We are also doing a staycation to celebrate my mom’s 60th birthday, and then I get a couple of staycations in Orlando to celebrate another year with Best Damn Race and then my friend’s 40th birthday. Yay!

  17. coffeemakerly says:

Coco, I also don’t like the shirt color. If it would white or navy blue, It would be great. But the medal looks unique. I’ve preferred it’s design. I don’t have any camping plan for the coming weekend. But glad to know you plan. Very cool sharing. ♥
