Doubling Up Workouts To Kick Off The New Year

I hope the first week of 2019 has been good to you! With a day off on Tuesday, some people still on vacation schedules, and general post-holiday-season discombobulation, I am struggling with remembering which day it is! I think I’m also confused because I adjusted my workout schedule around the holiday and even ended up doubling up workouts a few days.

Weekly Wrap

I’ll make up for those double workouts this week, since I have a business trip with flights that will prevent Wednesday and Friday workouts.

Happy New Year!

Before I get to my workout recap, I want to wish you a Happy New Year!

Our New Year’s Eve was nothing to write home blog about. I worked a long day, got home after 7 pm, and ate leftovers for dinner. I did take a rare afternoon coffee break at work, so I was ready to stay up until midnight, but we didn’t have any plans. We decided to watch Red Sparrow, which definitely held my attention.

It was 11:30 when we finished that, so we decided to start watching Killing Eve to keep the female spy/assassin vibe going. It was quite a different experience from watching The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, but we zoomed through season 2 of that show after Christmas.

Is there anything on Hulu we should be watching? I signed up to watch A Handmaid’s Tale, but I haven’t watched anything else and probably should stop paying $7.99/month for nothing!

Weekly Wrap

As I mentioned, my workout schedule was thrown off  this week by holiday schedules and accommodating my hip (?) issue. Last week my pain seemed to flare up after my Thursday yoga class, and I could barely walk on Friday. Luckily I had a physical therapy appointment and Heidi was able to work out the kinks so well that I woke up Saturday feeling 100% fine, but knowing that I wasn’t 100% healthy. Despite being wary this week, I ended up doubling up workouts a few days because I just couldn’t resist the good weather and Aimee’s debut at Orange Theory.

Monday: Strength workout, including physical therapy exercises

Tuesday (New Year’s Day):  5.5 Scooby Miles + 22 mile bike ride
Despite being up past 1:00 am on New Year’s Eve, I woke up before 6:00 am on New Year’s Day, and was wide awake. I had no choice but to run with Scooby!

The weather on New Year’s Day was perfect for a bike ride, so we did that too.

Wednesday: CycleBar (5:30 am) + Orange Theory (7:30 pm)
While Tuesday’s double workouts were intentional, I accidentally ended up doubling up my workouts on Wednesday too. I thought Aimee’s “friends and family” OTF class was on Thursday, and it was only after I’d gone to Cyclebar that I realized it was on Wednesday.

Second Studio Class of 2019
Aimee’s first class as an OTF coach at the new Lake Barcroft studio

Thursday: Strength workout, including physical therapy exercises
Usually I would think yoga would be a perfect way to follow-up two days of double workouts, but after my flare last week I was afraid to push my luck and opted to do an upper body strength workout and my physical therapy exercises.

Friday: Orange Theory Fitness back at my home studio with my favorite coach.

Orange Theory FitnessI use a 20 lb weight for French presses (holding it with both hands),
but only could eke out 8 reps when holding 10 lb weights in each hand-
-my right arm felt so much weaker!

We did a tough endurance workout with three sets of switches, spending 3:30+ at each station each time. For the treadmill, each time we ran 0.25 miles, walked for 45 seconds, and then ran for distance in the time remaining.  For the rower, each time we rowed 400M, 250M, and 100M, with 15 squat jacks in between. For the floor, each time we did 2-3 supersets of two upper body moves and then alternated two core moves for the time remaining. The upper body moves were different each time, but the core moves were the same. My arms experienced DOMS for days!

Saturday: 8.4 Scooby Miles
It was supposed to be a rainy day, but it was barely drizzling when I got up, so I was able to take Scooby out for a run–and only needed one layer.

Sunday: 27.89 mile bike ride
To get the most out of another unseasonably warm day, we tacked an out-and-back on part of the Custis Trail to our usual out-and-back on the Washington & Old Dominion trail. I forgot my water bottle in the car, but my husband was willing to share–and this water fountain had not been shut down for the winter!

I would never end a run at x.89 miles,
but it’s much harder to keep going to hit a round number on the bike.

And that’s a wrap!

How did you celebrate New Year’s Eve?

Do you watch any Hulu shows?

I also felt a bit off and not knowing what day it was this week. Back to work tomorrow should have my schedule “normal” again. Great week and happy new year!

  2. The second season of Mrs Maisel was amazing but I did not like the ending. I also ended up w a few double workout days this week so I am hoping I can keep that up on some of the days. Looks like your New Year’s is off to a running start 🙂

  3. Wendy says:

We did nothing for NYE either–in fact, I think Mike was passed out by 7! LoL!

    Score on that water fountain!

    • Coco says:

I’ve had years when I’ve crashed at 11, but not 7! I was surprised the fountain was working. I thought they shut them all off, but I guess they leave a few. It sure was warm enough.

  4. Liz Dexter says:

I managed to stay up until midnight on NYE by accident – we had a large turkey dinner which took a while to digest, then I was reading a really good book!

  5. kookyrunner says:

I totally felt the same way last week! I didn’t take any time off for the holidays, but I still was often asking myself “what day is it?” lol. Similar to you, I stayed home on NYE. I ordered pizza and salad and enjoyed watching the ball drop with my parents. I really like to keep it low key on that day.

  6. Cari says:

No clue what day it was — and coupled with a December vacation, this full week is going to be a challenge. Travel safe!
    Gorgeous Scooby sunrise
I hate the closed water fountains. Mom’s small town ones actually do better at that than NYC. Central Park especially should have some open near the year-round bathrooms

  7. therightfits says:

My NYE was low-key though I did make it until midnight. I was the first to go to bed at my sister’s and her kids are 15, 12, and 7! 🙂

I LOVED Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and zoomed through it. I also signed up for Hulu for the exact same reason but haven’t been using it much, with Netflix and Amazon Prime getting most of my treadmill time 🙂

  8. This was the first year, since I cannot remember when, that I didn’t make it to midnight. We’d gone to dinner with some friends and were back home around 9:30. I fell asleep on the couch, and the hubby woke me up around 12:30 to “officially” go to bed LOL

  9. You had a great first week despite the hip issues. I hope your PT exercises are helping.

Our NYE was pretty low-keyed – we had an epic family Risk game followed by Mario Party on the Switch. 🙂

I have not jumped on the Mrs. Maisel bandwagon yet, but from everything I’ve heard sounds like I need to.

  10. Renée says:

Grrr. My comment got eaten but it was basically this:
Wow! Lots of workouts and BIKING miles! Way to go!

If it makes you feel any better we had subway sandwiches for NYE dinner! We did go out though and have a few drinks, though I “had” to give hubs half my champagne since he drank all his before midnight…

I don’t know anything about the programs/shows you mentioned. We have Dutch Netflix (hulu not available here) and if it’s not on there I don’t know about it!

  11. Hope that hip stays feeling fine! I hate when yoga aggravates something — usually it’s my shoulder from too many vinyansas, but most of the time that doesn’t bother it.

Our NYE was quiet, although Mr. Judy grilled so no leftovers (I did the rest of the meals and some apps from Trader Joes).

We did a Hulu thing years ago & couldn’t find much, but I am interested in the Handmaid’s Tale and keep getting offers for trials. Someday maybe I’ll bite the bullet.

  12. Denise says:

It’s great that you’ve been on your bike, isn’t it cold? I struggle getting out in the cold to ride, even though I just bought a new rain/wind resistant jacket that I can’t wait to wear. ($50 at a going out of business sale!)

  13. Chaitali says:

I hope that you continue feeling 100% and the hip issue doesn’t come back! Good job with those double workouts last week 🙂

  14. Organic Runner Mom says:

Happy New year! I love those pink cycling shoes! So cute! I’ve seen Red Sparrow. What an intense movie!

  15. Darlene says:

Kudos on doubling up. I can’t even do one somedays.

We just have the basic cable and as a result, rarely watch TV.

Keep hoping that your hip is pain-free.

  16. Marc Pelerin says:

So nice that you get to log some miles with your dog. I get to do a bit of that as well and it’s super nice and enjoyable! Happy New Year!

  17. We just got hulu and so far we’ve watched Last Man Standing and that’s it. We’ve never had subscriptions like this so sometimes we forget it’s an option haha. Way to go on the two a days!

  18. Marcia says:

My in laws rave about Mrs. Maisel. We had a low key NYE watching Bird Box, which IMO was horrible. If I’d known it was a horror movie I suppose I’d have hated it less. So not my thing.

  19. HoHo Runs says:

We went for an early NYE dinner and were home by 8. For two weeks, I haven’t known what day it is. It’s great you’ve had mild weather and could get outside and enjoy your bike. I can never hit stop on a round bike mileage number either. I hope your hip is improving! Thanks for linking.

  20. runswithpugs says:

    Great week.

I was kind of unnerved by Red Sparrow. It was good but i didn’t like it as much as the book.

I watched Season 1 of The Handmaid’s Tale on Hulu, but that’s about it. I’m not big on TV and get easily distracted.

We celebrated NYE in our cul de sac with our neighbors, food, drink and small fireworks. It was low key and fun.

  21. Farrah says:

I’ve been such a lazy bum over the past couple weeks! ._. I still need to watch Red Sparrow, and yay for A Handmaid’s Tale! I recently discovered that my friend has Hulu so I’m hoping to peruse her account… 😛 I’ve heard good things about This is Us!

  22. Oh man, I hope you’re feeling better and that physical therapy takes care of the root cause of your pain.

We had to cancel two different New Year’s Eve plans (going to an open house and hosting another couple for dinner) because we were both sick. Happy New Year!
