Rainy Runfessions

This is usually my favorite time of year for running, but OMG the rain! And if it’s not raining, the humidity has been oppressive. In September! I think Mother Nature needs to join this month’s Runfessions over at  Marcia’s Healthy Slice.

She also could join the Friday Five link up at Running On Happy and Fairytales and Fitness. Should Deborah and I invite her to join the October Ultimate Coffee Date next weekend? Only if she promises to bring nice weather!

Rainy Runfessions

I runfess that the rainy weather has made it easier to choose running over cycling. I won’t ride in the rain, but I will run as long as it’s not pouring. That said, I did go for a ride on wet roads last Saturday–but I rode cautiously to avoid wiping out on slick pavement. All that caution was for naught when I took a nasty spill during my run on Sunday.

Chicago Road Rash

Ironically, I was blinded by the sun and tripped over a mound of debris.

I runfess that I stopped at Starbucks before I went to CVS for Bactine and Band-Aids, but I did wash off the blood first.

I runfess that I got so many great pictures from my two runs along the Chicago Lakefront Trail, I have to share more.

Here’s a few from Sunday, when I ran along the Riverwalk, around Navy Pier, and then north–where I ate some asphalt.

Here’s a few from Monday, when I ran south.

I wanted to run on Tuesday too, but I woke up to pouring rain.

I runfess that while I love to run in Chicago, my Garmin can’t cope with the tall buildings.

Chicago GarminHow do you track your mileage when your Garmin does this?

I runfess that while my new Brooks Ravena feel light and comfortable, I am tempted to return them because my pace has been off every time I run in them instead of my Mizunos. It’s got to be the shoes, right? It couldn’t be the lack of stretching, neglected foam rolling, or over-doing it, could it?

Have you had a rainy September?

Does your Garmin freak out on any of your routes?

I was re-reading my RnR Chicago race recap yesterday, and yep, I had weird splits from the tall buildings! I’m glad you enjoyed your time in Chicago. I hope next time you come we can connect!

  2. kookyrunner says:

Totally agree with you about the rain – it’s been so wet and windy here too. Even as I type this, it’s raining, lol! We had some bad flooding in my town earlier this week too.

We live at the top of a hill, but there are a lot of really deep puddles on the sidewalks where I walk Scooby — I have to remember to hop into the street or I’ll get wet.

  3. This weather is just ridiculous! I have lived here my whole life and I cannot remember anything like this. So over this rain and humidity. October has to be better right?!

  4. Debbie Woodruff says:

I’m sorry you fell. I hope it’s healing well. Rain sounds pretty good actually, since we still have triple digits here (already over 80 at 5:45 am). I love your photo player! Is it a plugin?

  5. Marcia says:

I’ve gotta say Chicago is a gorgeous place to run. Sorry about the asphalt for breakfast though. Thanks for linking!

  6. Virjinia says:

Oh no! I’m so sorry about falling. Hopefully it gets better quickly. This will be my first time running in Chicago and I’m excited for all the beautiful sights. I’m also going in knowing that my Garmin won’t be right so I’m wearing a pace band. I have Ravenas and they’re ok but I prefer my New Balance for longer runs.

  7. This rain is driving me crazy! So sorry about your fall – glad you weren’t seriously hurt.

  8. HoHo Runs says:

It’s the shoes! 😉 Oh the irony of complaining about rain and falling due to blinding sun… You sure we aren’t related?

  9. Darlene says:

    Love your pix. Keep sharing.

I fell once on the streets of NYC and had to stop at CVS to be able to continue my run.

I wear the same shoes – NIKE. I wonder if I could be faster with a different shoe…but change is hard!

  10. Rain is a tough deal breaker for me…I don’t mind running in it if I’m already running when the rain appears, but I don’t think I have ever willingly stepped out (and ran) if it was already raining. As for biking …no.can.do.

    • Coco says:

I used to be the same way, but if it’s not raining too hard, I don’t mind it — depending on my mood. Agree on biking though. It’s so much riskier and not worth it!

  11. I ran the Hot chocolate 15K in Chicago last year & my Garmin went totally crazy too. Guess there is not much we can do about it.

  12. angela@marathonsandmotivation.com says:

Ouch! That looks like a nasty bruise…sorry that happened. I hope the rain dies down and you can enjoy Fall running!!

  13. Hate that you had to eat pavement in order to get such beautiful pictures! But Chicago really is a pretty place to see while running. Hope it heals up quickly. I’m sure the Starbucks helped tremendously! Lol

  14. It has been super rainy here too! I am over all the wet weather.
I am sorry for your fall! That is no fun!
Great pics in Chicago! I do miss running in that city!

  15. Liz Dexter says:

Oh, your poor elbow – how’s it feeling now?

  16. Farrah says:

I definitely haven’t been a big fan of the rain, haha. Yay for indoor workouts!!

  17. This weather has been absolutely absurd. I think that the weather this coming week is supposed to be nicer…fingers crossed that the forecast is correct!
