Love My Speed Workouts!

Thursday I was tempted to run outside because the weather was so gorgeous, but I wanted to stick to my plan for a speed workout. It was too dark to run on the track, so I opted for my treadmill.

I punched in 45 minutes, spent 5 minutes walking, 5 minutes running at 5.7 mph, and 5 min running at 6.0 mph. That was my warm-up, and left me 30 min for speed intervals.

I did 5 cycles of 2 min at 6.7 mph/1 min at 5.7 mph, and then 5 cycles of 2 min at 7.0 mph/1 min at 5.7 mph. Then I walked for 5 min to cool down. The sweat was pouring off – love that!

I felt my ITB (both sides) during the faster intervals, but nothing that lingered.

I wrapped up with lots of stretching and some crunches on my fit ball.

Home Sweet Home

As much as I like the variety that a good hotel gym can offer, it is nice to be home.

I slid back in to my usual routine today: dog walk, elliptical (20 min forward/reverse intervals), free weights (30 min super sets routine).

The most remarkable thing was the dog walk. Sally (my 12 year old beagle) is declining again (lymphoma) so I cut our route in half. She kept up a good pace, but I didn’t want to wear her out.

I’m still feeling Monday’s weight workout, but i made it through today’s without skimping. Well, maybe that last set of bicep curls was a few reps short.

Venturing Out

When I went to bed last night, I had pretty much decided to play it safe/comfortable and hit the hotel gym instead of going for a run outside in a strange city. I was up until 11:30, though, and hit “snooze” until almost 6:00 am this morning.  When I got to the gym @ 6:15 (teeth brushed, gym clothes on) all of the treadmills were full, and from the look of the “elapsed time” readings, most people had just started. I debated for a few minutes and decided to handle my urgent work emails and then go out for a run. I went to Starbucks for some coffee (Anniversary Blend) and fuel (oatmeal), and then went back up to my hotel room.

I managed to get my urgent work done by 7:30, and was out on the sidewalk by 7:40. I decided to follow the route suggested by the hotel–about 5.5 miles, with 2 miles downhill to a park, 1+ miles around the park and, yup, 2 miles back up hill to the hotel.

I used the GPS App on my iPhone and noticed that I was at the park in just under 20 minutes. I got a bit “lost” going around the park because there were so many paths to choose from (I realized by the end of my park “loop” that there was a 1 mile loop path around some playing fields in the center of the park that the hotel map suggested), but I made it around and back out in about 15 minutes.

That’s the last time point I can report because the next time I looked at the GPS, it was at 0:00 with no recorded “tracks.” Grrr! What is it with me and technology these days?

I finished my run, keeping a steady pace up the hill, and ended up with a total time of about 60 min, judging from my 7:40 start time.

It was a decent route–not too dicey–but not very scenic. The park was nice, but the rest of the route was by office buildings or parking lots. The weather was great, though, and it was so nice to get some fresh are after 1.5 days of conference meeting rooms.

It’s really only this year that I’ve even considered going for an outdoor run when I’m staying at a hotel. It was Chicago that got me started–I had such a glorious 8 mile run by the lake in May. I’m not totally comfortable with it though, and will choose my towns–and my routes–carefully.

Cool Workout, Cold Shower

Business travel is always an adventure. My minimum requirements for a hotel are (i) high-speed internet and (2) a gym, but I’ve still been surprised on both counts–like when the only high-speed internet was in the lobby, or the hotel gym was being renovated so I had to go to a commercial gym down the street (at least it was open early).   This week I am at a Hyatt in Atlanta, so I had pretty high expectations on both counts.

I hit the gym a bit before 6:00 this morning and was impressed.  There were several areas with rows of machines, with space in between–so different from the Hampton Inn where the equipment was squeezed into a tiny room (but I did give that gym a good review, after all it was a Hampton Inn and it did have three high-quality Precor machines).

Today was my “elliptical + weights” day, so I can only vouch for the elliptical, and it was a nice LifeFitness machine with a built-in TV screen.

For weights, there was a section of machines, a bank of “plate” style free weights, and another area with lots of floor space and a rack with rubberized “dumbbell” style free weights. I chose to workout in the open area, and grabbed the 15 lb dumbbells.  When I was ready for 20 lb weights, I realized that there weren’t any in that set, so I went to the “plate” style weights, but they were really too cumbersome for me. I couldn’t hold the weights at my side without the big plates knocking in to me and found that I was straining my back/shoulders to hold them a bit further out to the side. (Can someone explain the benefits of the big plates? do they make you think you are lifting something heavier? is there a benefit from the awkward size/shape?) I put them back and stuck with 15’s (except for plie squats and French presses, where I could hold one of the plate style weights by one of its plates). I went through my routine and finished with some crunches on a fit ball that I am starting to feel already.

After my workout, I fed my Starbucks addiction with my iPhone addiction, by pulling up a map and searching for Starbucks. Of course, there was one 1/2 block away.  I got a grande Anniversary Blend and some oatmeal so I wouldn’t be at the mercy of the continental breakfast that was part of the conference program. (As it turns out, it was fruit, muffins, pastries and some egg sandwiches–I snagged some fruit on my way into the first session.)

So far, so good, but here comes the cold shower part.

When I checked in yesterday, I did notice that the bathroom wasn’t as nice as, say, a Westin, but it looked fine. When I went to take a shower this morning, and pulled the knob up to go from “bath” to “shower,” only half the water was diverted.  “Oh well,” I thought, “it’s not my water bill,” and the water pressure still seemed OK.

It took a while for the water to warm up, though, and I was having flashbacks to my horrible experience (years ago, but it still makes me cringe) when I had no hot water whatsoever in my room at a Westin–a discovery I made only after a long, sweaty run in the hotel gym, and shortly before my meeting started, so I had no choice but to take a frigid shower which brought on an instant cold–did I mention that it was February and I was in Chicago?

Anyway, today’s shower wasn’t that bad, but it was at best a luke-warm shower, although the water that was running into the tub seemed warmer. It’s as if most of the water that was going up to the shower was the cold water, while the warmer water went straight into the tub. Unlike my Westin experience, it wasn’t a hot water problem (the Westin gave me some story about a new hot water heater system that they were still working the bugs out of) because there was plenty of hot water in the sink.

During my morning break I mentioned the problem to the front desk, and there is a note in my bathroom that “my request has been completed.” If I were smart, I’d test it out tonight, but I probably will wait until after tomorrow’s sweaty run to find out.

Yoga ~ Third Time’s the Charm?

I woke up to pouring rain today, so I had to scrap my plans to take my dog out for a walk. But, I was AWAKE so I decided to do a yoga workout. I thought I should branch out from my one-and-only yoga workout (Beth Shaw’s Yoga Fit which I have on VHS) and see what I could find on On Demand.

There is a whole category of yoga programs on Comcast’s ExerciseTV, but many are an hour long (are you kidding me?), I found one that looked good–that is, it was a 30 min program. Well, my DVR crashed while trying to load the program. Not only did it not load the program but it *freaked out* and stopped working altogether. The TV screen was dark, and instead of showing the time or channel, the digital display on the DVR showed an ever-changing random number/letter combination. It wasn’t the numbers from LOST but it might as well have been.

I did not have time to call Comcast, but I noticed a yoga DVD on the shelf–I honestly don’t know where or when I got it. I decided to give it a try, unwrapped the cellophane, and popped it in the DVR. It has two programs, a 30 minute “fat burning” program and a “yoga for balance/energy program.” I wanted to try the 30 minute program because, well, it was 30 minutes, but I accidentally started the other program. I didn’t want to “start over” with the introductory warnings, so I stuck with it.

It turned out to be a program for TTOM–seriously?–mostly gentle stretching and relaxing. At least it was only 15 minutes long.

Later this afternoon I decided to give it another try, and this time was careful to select the 30 min program. It was very easy–still mostly gentle stretching–with a few challenging segments because my calves and hamstrings are so tight. I’m not sure I’ll do it again, but I’m glad I did it.

My friend Coothie recommends Rodney Yee, but if I buy a new yoga DVD, I’ll really be committing to doing yoga more often, and I’m not sure I’m ready for that!
