May Runfessions

It’s the last Friday of the month and the start of Memorial Day Weekend–the perfect time to gather at Marcia’s runfessional and cleanse our souls soles before we kick off summer. I’ve been running close to home, but my May runfessions are all over the place.

Also join me in the Fit Five Friday Link-Up with DarleneMichelle, Renée, Jenn, and Zenaida.

Deborah and I will be hosting the June Ultimate Coffee Date next weekend. We’ll open the (link-up) doors Friday June 4th, and keep the coffee brewing.

May Runfessions

I’m going to get this one out of the way, so the squeamish can scroll by quickly. 😉

water fountain with cicadas

I runfess, I turned on the fountain and took a drink
while trying to avert my eyes from the dying cicadas.

I runfess I felt bad about starting physical therapy on my Achilles when I was overdue for a pedicure, but between increasing vaccination rates and summer-like temperatures, it took weeks to get a pedicure appointment! When the day came I was hesitant to sacrifice the most-excellent taping job by my physical therapist, but I was getting the pedicure was for her sake too!

As it turns out, the taping job was so good it survived the process!

I runfess that even though I whine about being bored with my neighborhood running routes, I find myself choosing the same Peloton outdoor runs week after week. This one is perfect for the 5 mile route where I tackle one short and one long hill, and I find myself comparing where I am when the different songs come on from one run to another. Maybe growing up on VHS exercise videos gave me a high tolerance for repeat workouts.

Peloton Interval RunI may feel like I’m in a rut with my workouts, but my Garmin tells me that they are paying off. I try to take these things with a grain of salt, but I runfess it made me feel good to see this status–too bad I don’t have a race scheduled until November!

Garmin DataMuch better than the “detraining” status I saw
before my Grave’s disease was diagnosed.

Do you have favorite workouts you don’t mind repeating?

Wow, VO2 max of 52! Yeah, I’d say your training is paying off. Love when my Garmin talks sweetly to me, lol.

Your pedicure looks great! I hope your PT appreciated it!

  2. Marcia says:

Woo! Nice job “peaking”! Who wouldn’t love to see that? On the other hand, cicadas in the drinking fountain are a big fat, gross NO. Ugh! That’s awesome the tape job withstood the rigors of a pedi!

    • Coco says:

The problem is my conditioning can only go down from here — I’ll have to keep that in mind when the next status isn’t so encouraging.

  3. Darlene says:

Love the pedicure. Reminds me to get that manicure.

My running routes are getting boring. Constantly looking for new ones.

I had a tape job for my calf once that lasted weeks. I was so happy.

  4. Janelle @ Run With No Regrets says:

Oh the cicadas! I couldn’t do it….nope! We still don’t have any public water fountains open around here. It has to have been over a year since I had a pedicure….I may have gotten one the day before giving birth to baby E? Lol! I need to see what I can do!

    • Coco says:

This water fountain is at a school, but I ^think^ the ones on the bike path are working now too.

I think it’s time to treat yourself to a pedicure!

  5. You know how I feel about the cicadas! This week was bad. I am glad that you finally got some PT for your Achilles. I want you on my Ragnar team! Pedicures are a must for runners. I have to find that training status feature on my Garmin I’d say you are in fantastic shape

  6. jenny says:

You are brave, but I also would have taken a drink from that water fountain. Water is water, and it’s hot out!
As a massage therapist, I always have people who come in and apologize for their feet, and I’m like,”Don’t worry about it- I’m a runner!” Ha ha.

  7. I’ve been doing my pedicures (and manicures) at home f.o.r.e.v.e.r but would LOVE someone else to take the reigns LOL I’m not fearful of any Covid stuff (anymore), but I just don’t have the available time when the peeps are available. All the cicadas are creeping me out! I went for a walk in the rain, recently, and avoiding all the worms on the sidewalks was bad enough…glad I didn’t have to worry about them flying into my face.

    • Coco says:

I just don’t have the patience to do a mani or pedi correctly myself. Somehow I don’t mind relaxing while someone else does it.

  8. Denise says:

I need a mani-pedi so bad. I actually just did my toes myself.
Great job on the training status!

  9. kookyrunner says:

I haven’t gotten a pedicure since the pandemic hit so I am LONG overdue for one, lol. Maybe I’ll treat myself to one next month.

I think it’s great that you’ve found an outdoor run class that works so well with your route. I feel the same way about one of Matt Wliper’s pre-run stretches. It’s only 5 minutes but super effective and I take it often.

Oh that first photo made me squirm! When are the cicadas due to leave your area?

  10. Laurie says:

I have been trying to find the cicadas and can’t. I saw them 17 years ago and thought they were so cool! N ow, they are nowhere to be found.

I like variety in my workouts, but Bill would do the same route over and over if it was up to him. Different strokes… 🙂

    • Coco says:

The climate must not be right for them in your area this cycle.

I generally do like variety, but these outdoor running classes are more like playlists, and I do have my favorites.

  11. Lisa says:

I still haven’t gotten a pedicure since getting vaccinated, but I hope to soon! Its been kind of nice saving money on stuff like that. Ugh the cicadas are so gross!!

  12. OMG that first photo! I would not have been able to stand there much less take a drink!

I am so overdue for a pedicure, it’s not even funny! I’ve done the at-home version, but it’s just not the same!

  13. Catrina says:

I envy your for your Garmin status! Mine right now says 48 and “Overreaching”.

I know how you feel about the taping of the Achilles. My doctor sent me a video so I could do it myself. Then I managed to convince my husband to do it for me every few days. He became a taping expert! 😉

  14. run.laugh.eat pie says:

    nice V02 max!!!

I runfess that at my last massage I told my therapist to not bother removing my socks or doing my feet as they were in super bad shape! It’s so funny because PT’s and massage therapists have seen it all (trust me – I’ve had to do some gnarly feet in my short part-time career in massage) and I bet your feet weren’t as bad as you felt they were.

I do repeat workouts all the time! But I’m also from the VHS age :). I like to do what I like, what makes me feel good and also let’s me compare. So if I do bodypump 110 5 times and each time I can add more weight or complete the tricep dips or push through the clean and presses like a beast, then I am happy!

I wonder what my garmin says about me… I’m going to have a look.

  15. I don’t like repeating Peloton workouts generally, but now that it’s warmer I haven’t really used it. So I runfess I’m still paying for it & not using it. Shhhh!

I don’t get pedicures & I don’t pain my toenails, either (or my fingernails anymore). I never have. I don’t quite get the obsession most people have with that.

Luckily my Garmin doesn’t tell me if I’m being productive or not. I runfess I don’t think I’d like what it has to tell me!

  16. I like your pedicure! Once this school year is done I am going to treat myself to a pedicure. I would not have drank water from that fountain. Kudos to you! The fountains along the lakefront are closed.

  17. Jenn says:

Yay for a pedicure! I haven’t had one in about two years. Not mad about it, just crazy how that goes.

When do the cicadas leave???? So part of nature, so gross.

I run the same routes a lot. I’m a creature of habit in some ways.

    • Coco says:

I run the same routes all.the.time these days. I have my 2 mile loop, my 3+ mile loop, and my 4-5 mile loop (depending on if I add any cul-de-sacs). I did add a new 5 mile loop but it’s really my 3 mile loop with an out-and-back added.

  18. Cari says:

Water is necessary, but if there was a stick I’d have tried to evict the cicadas before drinking. I used to be super squeamish about the idea of who else touched a fountain (even pre covid), but running in summer knocked that out of me. Pretty pedi and LOL on the vhs workouts. Matty talking about his sweat always makes me think of “Sweating to the Oldies” even though neither he nor his music are.
