Holiday Baking And Hamstring Bellyaching

At least it’s not all about my hamstring, right? Believe me, I’m as tired of it as you are! So, how about some Christmas cookies?

Holiday Baking

I’ll start with the fun topic. As I mentioned at our December coffee date, I hosted the annual cookie-bake-a-thon I’ve done with my friends for decades. At one point we all worked together, but now it’s this tradition that has us toiling as a team for hours.

There were two others I forgot to get a picture of!

Each person makes a double batch of two recipes and someone volunteers to make cut-outs ahead of time for us all to decorate. There were only 4 of us this year, so we each ended up with well over a dozen of each kind. I stashed mine in the freezer until I have time to assemble gift assortments

Bellyaching

I continued to cut way back on my running, surrendering to what is, as Jess Sims often says. My hamstring really does seem to be improving, but it’s still not better. I found this article an interesting read, as my PT plan fits pretty well with what it says. It also reinforced her guidance that some activity with low-level pain/discomfort is OK.part of the recovery process. 🤔 Still, after 9 months of this, I really want to be pain-free.

I was able to see my podiatrist, and he wants me to get an MRI before he does shockwave treatment, to make sure there’s nothing else going on (like a tear). My ortho ordered an MRI, but I couldn’t get an appointment for 2 weeks. I spent 2 hours calling different imaging places, but couldn’t get in any sooner than the first place I called. 🤷‍♀️

Weekly Run Down

Monday: I’ve been drawn to Jess King’s classes lately. Her low impact sweat steady rides are low impact but not easy.

Tuesday: Corepower Yoga

Wednesday: It had been a while since I did Jess Sims’s Turksih get up workout, and I felt up for the challenge. It taxed my hamstring a bit, but didn’t seem to have any lasting repercussions. I chose Camilla’s walk + run for the playlist, and did even more walking than she called for—who am I?

Thursday: Now that I don’t have the office gym to myself ay 6 am, I’m doing my strength workout at home, and then going in to use the Peloton—at least I still have that to myself! I cherry-picked this upper body class out of Andy Speer’s split program. It was tough but do-able.

Friday: I was in a mellow mood when I chose Ally’s Norah Jones ride, but by the time I was done I wanted to kick up the energy level with Blink-182. I really love the variety of music on the Peloton platform.

Saturday: I didn’t have a lot of time to workout before I started baking, but I wanted to try another walk + run. Logan’s class had an easy program, with five 1:1 intervals and four 2:2 intervals. My hamstring was pretty OK and best of all didn’t bother me later in the day. I don’t want to get my hopes up again because it was a bit cranky yesterday.

A huge thank you to Deborah and Kim for hosting the Weekly Run Down link up.

I used to participate in several cookie swaps.

But no longer and the kids are grown. They do look so good.

Glad to hear your hamstring is better. I hope it continues to improve.

I feel lucky that the Y is almost empty (the machines) when I go early.

    • Coco says:

I don’t think I’ve ever done a traditional swap — I do this and then bake a few batches for my family closer to Christmas.

  2. Debbie says:

I was just thinking about your cookie baking day earlier this week. I used to host a friends’ cookie baking day, but they lost interest. 🙁

Ugh on the long wait for the MRI. In the meantime, it’s good that you’re able to do a wide variety of workouts.

  3. Wendy says:

I hope the MRI gives you an answer! I know you’re impatient to get started on the shockwave treatment. Just keep doing what you’re doing!

I’m going to attempt some baking today–starting with sugar cookies!

  4. Catrina says:

If I’d do a bake-a-thon, I’d be eating ALL the cookies during the process. If some would survive, I’d eat them ALL before I can give any away. It’s crazy how I love cookies. My favourites are the one in your top photo – the little man on the left with all the colourful sprinkles.
Good luck with your MRI in 2 weeks!

    • Coco says:

Since we are dividing them up, we are pretty good about not eating them, unless a few “break” or “accidentally” get smooshed. 😉

  5. Hope that MRI gives you some answers and you can get your shockwave done quickly. Being in pain for so long is not fun. Andy’s split training is going to be my next one

  6. As I’ve said before, your cooking baking day looks SO FUN! I’d love to organize something similar here. I’m really like all of Andy’s workouts. I think he’s so fun, and he works you hard in a short period of time!

  7. Melissa says:

Ooooh I love christmas cookies and holiday baking! I have started making some of the dough for our cookies but not done any baking yet. I’d love to do a cookie bakathon – so much fun!
nice job staying active even with your hamstring issues. hope you get some answers soon!

  8. I’ve never lived anywhere as an adult for decades. TX was the closest at 17 years, and we’re bumping up against that soon here. I can’t imagine!

I hope that you can finally get some peace with that hamstring. 🙁

  9. Jenny says:

Yum!!! Those cookies look so good. I had a mini-bake-athon of my own today- I made peppermint snowballs and molasses cookies. As my husband said, I’m just getting warmed up. There’s lots more to come.
Sigh- hamstrings are so tricky. I skimmed that article- it all sounds good. But it’s just frustrating how slowly these things heal. I hope you can do shockwave (eventually) as that might speed things up. Fingers crossed!

  10. Sorry the hamstring issue is still dragging on. That injury seems to be one that lasts for such a long time (I know, mine was there for years. ugh) Those cookies all look so delicious! I need to put ours in the freezer too, because we [me and my husband] have been eating them and we need to save them for the kids!!
