Catching Covid And Sleeping It Off

Well, I guess it should come as no surprise that my first business trip of 2023 led to my first positive covid test result. Catching covid was not on my list of things to do, but now I’m doing all I can to recover—including sleeping it off.

Catching Covid

I wasn’t even going to take a test until a friend who had tested positive shared that her symptoms were like mine—a scratchy throat that morphed into a cough that morphed into a sneezy/runny nose. I’ve taken home tests every time I’ve had a “cold” and they’ve always been negative, so I was surprised to see a positive result.

That positive line lit up immediately!

I guess the “expired” tests still work—we have a few more boxes of them.

After getting my results, I contacted my conference co-panelists, the people I had dinner with on Thursday, and the client I met with on Friday—when my first symptoms started. I did not contact United Airlines or Uber—I feel like those days are over.

Sleeping It Off

My main strategy for recovering was to get as much rest as possible. Even before I tested positive, I had turned off my alarm to recover from the red-eye I took home from California. Once I started feeling better I found myself sleeping until 6:30–probably when daylight started to peek through the blinds. That may have backfired because when I saw it was light and unseasonably warm outside, it was hard to resist taking Scooby out for a short run. Since I was taking it easy with my workouts, I was still able to start working (at home) at a reasonable time (8:30 or 9:00).

Weekly Run Down

I kept up my daily Peloton class streak, but I cut way back on my workout time. I ignored my “schedule” and chose classes I wanted to take—I always feel better with some movement. Since I was avoiding hard classes I chose Peloton rides based on music and hit my 350th Peloton ride with Camilla’s recent Pop Punk Ride.

Sunday: 1 mile walk with Scooby
This is probably the day I felt the worst. I slept until almost 8 am and then took Scooby out for a walk while my coffee brewed. I had passing thoughts of taking a yoga or stretch class later in the day, but never made it off the sofa.

Monday: 15 min pre-run warm up + 3.25  Scooby Miles
I slept until almost 7 am so it was full daylight when I got up. I was going to take Scooby for a walk, but saw how warm it was outside—upper 40s. That was too hard to resist. I stacked two Peloton pre-run warm-up classes for 15 min total and took Scooby out for an easy run. It was so late I skipped my usual loop through the neighborhood school—no need to dodge morning drop-off traffic.

Tuesday: 1 mile walk + Core + Bodyweight  Strength + 20 min Peloton Ride
By Tuesday I had tested positive and was still feeling like I had a bad cold. I chose body weight workouts and Sam Yo’s New Year’s Day ride for a bit of cardio. I took it easy, but it still felt harder than Monday’s run—riding always does.

Wednesday: Core + 3.25 Scooby Miles
Another sleep-in, another day tempted by unseasonably warm weather.

Thursday: 1 mile Walk + 20 min Bodyweight Strength + 20 min Peloton Ride
It was a pop punk Thursday with two classes with pop punk playlists. Callies is not one of my favorite instructors, but this was a good class.

Friday: Core +10 min SFR + 4.5 Scooby Miles
It was in the 50s when I woke up at 5:30 so I had to go for a run. I chose a slightly longer loop, but kept my pace easy.

Smiling in shorts!

Saturday: 1 mile walkCore + 45 min FB Strength + 20 min Peloton Ride
It’s hard not to be doing a long run on a Saturday morning, but I wouldn’t have run long anyway, so I took Jess Sims’s new 45 min strength class instead. It was relatively easy—or at least slow-paced—with a long 6 x 3 block of unilateral exercises to start things off. Even the 8 min EMOM at the end wasn’t frenetic. I almost skipped CDE’s ride, but as soon as I heard the first song (The Lovecats by The Cure) I was glad I didn’t.

So, here I am a week after catching covid. I don’t feel 100% yet, but I am getting there. I’d feel better if I hadn’t passed it on to my husband, but hopefully he’ll recover soon too.

A huge thank you to Deborah and Kim for hosting the Weekly Run Down link up.

Have you taken a red-eye flight?

Fatigue was the thing I dealt with the most when I had Covid last summer. I slept so much and so well! I’m glad you are on the mend. I didn’t have the energy to run, though!

  2. Bummer that you got covid on your trip. That’s just the world we live in right now I guess. Looks like your symptoms are not too bad and you have kept up your daily workouts. No, I would not ever book a red eye flight! We take overnight flights when we fly overseas but they are longer so we get some sleep. Feel better!

  3. Darlene S. Cardillo says:

Oh darn. Sorry to hear this. Hope you feel better soon. At least you were not sick while you were away.

My hubby got Covid but luckily somehow I didn’t catch.

  4. Jenny says:

Ah, of course you got Covid from your trip! It seems like everyone who travels now comes home with Covid. We’re pretty sure my husband got his from our trip to Tampa. Anyway, glad it wasn’t too bad- you still got in some good workouts! When I had Covid (a year ago) I tried to run and I couldn’t. I hope your husband feels better soon!

  5. I’m glad you’re rallying-back from Covid. It’s amazing you’ve avoided it this long! I know the temptation, though, to get outside when the weather is nice. It was mid-August for me, and that’s my favorite kind of weather. I took things easy, but there was no way I was staying inside 😉 I hope your husband continues to feel better.

  6. Debbie says:

It seems like it’s not a matter of if we get Covid, but when… I was glad that we got it later after it had mutated to a milder variant (I got it first and gave it to my husband as well). Happy to hear that you’re feeling progressively better!

  7. Teresa says:

Boo for Covid. I’ve only had it once, during the first wave, and haven’t had it again. I’ve had soooo much exposure. I still get paranoid if I start having a sore throat.

  8. Jenn says:

Ugh! I am so sorry! That is not the parting gift anyone wanted. I’m glad you are recovering and I hope your husband feels better soon, too!

  9. Well boo on Covid AND passing it on to your husband! Hopefully it will be just a memory soon. I was just wondering the other day when it would be time to get my Covid shot again. I don’t think anyone close to me has had it lately (and hopefully it stays that way!).

  10. Marcia says:

Ugh I’m so sorry Covid caught you. No fun at all. The fatigue is absolutely crushing. At least it was for me. Glad you’re feeling better! Hope your hubby isn’t too bad.

  11. Michelle says:

Such a bummer about Covid – I’m glad your symptoms are mild. I think it’s pretty amazing that you got in all the workouts you did. I hope both you and your husband are feeling better soon!

  12. Cari says:

I’m with you on the airlines not doing anything with the info. I took four flights in January and zero notifications, and it’s impossible that no one on the flights was +
I’m not even sure the iOS proximity trackers are even a thing anymore.
Glad you’re doing better, and yes it’s about doing what you want to – not what you *have* to

  13. Catrina says:

Finally Coco is sleeping!! I’m glad to hear that you got some rest, at least that’s one positive thing about testing positive, ha!
Did you take off from work? I hope so… but knowing you, you probably worked, am I right? 😉

  14. Susanne says:

So sorry to hear about you catching Covid. I hope you both feel better soon! I’m impressed you did so much activity during the week after all. But of course, dogs need to be walked!

  15. Oh no! I’m so sorry your husband got it too. You seem to be on the mend, though, so that’s good — you just never know how it will hit you, everyone has a different COVID it seems.

If I had COVID my husband would be walking Bandit. Although if I’m home, Bandit usually won’t walk with my husband without me.

Hopefully your VT Skit trip is still on? Fingers crossed for you both.

  16. Kim G says:

Ugh! Definitely not a gift you want to bring back from a business trip. I am glad that you are feeling better and that it was a milder case. Fingers crossed that your husband feels better soon too.

  17. Jessie says:

well, you avoided it for quite a long time! And it sounds like its been relatively mild right? I had the same reaction when I tested positive, it was such a shock after SOOO many tests that were negative!

Sending continued healing thoughts your way!
