On The Road Again

Last weekend I barely had time to unpack, do laundry, and pack my bags again for the two trips I took last week. Being on the road again was exhausting but worth it. I got to have dinner with Cari, run in Central Park and along the Chicago lakefront, and see colleagues I’ve only met on Zoom.

Even better: my post-travel at-home Covid test was negative.

On The Road Again

Back in the before times I seemed to end up with one hectic stretch of travel every year. It usually was in the fall, but I’m hoping this was it for 2022. The week before last, I flew to San Diego on Monday, San Fransisco on Wednesday, and home on Friday. I took the train to NYC on Sunday afternoon, came home on Monday night, and flew to Chicago Tuesday morning—arriving just in time to give my presentation at noon. By the time I got home on Thursday evening, I was tired!

If you saw my runfessions post, you already saw my favorite runrise photos.

Wednesday morning along the Chicago Riverwalk

What I didn’t talk about was the temperature difference. Monday I was comfortable in long sleeves and shorts, but for Wednesday’s run I had to squeeze my winter running gear into my carry-on—including the vest, fuzzy headband and gloves I’d put away for the season.

My struggle with hotel gym weights continued. Thursday morning I had the hotel gym to myself, but the lightest weights there were 15 lbs, so I made it a lower body strength day.

Weekly Run Down

Don’t let all this running fool you, my foot is still not better. It is getting better, but it still bothers off-and-on me when I run and sometimes just walking around. Like plantar faciitis, it’s also really stiff first thing in the morning. I’ve cut back on taking my anti-inflammatory but still wear my foot brace once in a while—sometimes it seems to help but sometimes it feels uncomfortable.

Monday: 6+ mile run in NYC
I wore my Garmin for this run, but the GPS data has me ping-ponging across 5th Avenue until I got to Central Park. I was running for just over an hour and didn’t get stopped at too many lights, so I know I ran at least 6 miles.

Tuesday: Core + Upper Body Strength
I didn’t have a lot of time to workout before my 6:45 am Uber to the airport, but I squeezed in 30 min of Peloton strength workouts after walking Scooby.

Wednesday: Core + 6+ mile run in Chicago
I did a core workout in the hotel gym before heading out for a run. Again, my Garmin couldn’t cope with the tall buildings, but I ran for a bit over an hour—along the Riverwalk, then along the lakefront, around the planetarium, and back.

Chicago Lakefront Run

Thursday: Core + Lower Body Strength
This was my one hotel gym workout of the week. I warmed up walking on the tread, and then did a lower body strength workout while I still had the room to myself. After that, I opted for bodyweight strength and core workouts to round things out.

Peloton workoutsFriday: Core + Upper Body Strength + 20 min Peloton Ride
I was back home Friday, but since my foot was grumpy I took Scooby for a walk instead of a run. Kendall’s latest Arms & Light Weights class is getting a lot of buzz as a tough one, and it was.Peloton workouts

Saturday:  5.3 Scooby Miles + Core
I was going to take Scooby out for a short run, but the weather was so nice I opted for a longer loop. My foot was a bit whiny, so I didn’t stretch it out to 6 miles when I could have.

It was so bright when we headed out at 6:45,
I grabbed a hat to keep the sun out of my eyes.

Sunday: core + 4.3 Treadmill Miles + Upper Body Strength
I intended to do Jess Sims’s Saturday 60 Bootcamp workout from yesterday to hear more about her Boston experience, but I chickened out and opted for Selena’s 30 min upper body bootcamp. Ironically, when I was done I wanted to do “a bit more” and chose a 20 min Jess Sims treadmill class I’d had bookmarked for a while. After the warm-up it was all “listening games”—adding incline or speed each time a certain word or phrase comes up in the song. 🥵

Deborah and I will be hosting the May Ultimate Coffee Date next weekend. We’ll open the (link-up) doors Friday, May 6th!

A huge thank you to Deborah and Kim for hosting the Weekly Run Down link up.

Are you setting goals for May? My goal is for my foot to get better!

Sounds like a whirlwind week! Just reading about your travel and presentations exhausts me lol! Sorry our weather wasn’t nicer but what can you do? Props to you for packing your winter gear. Hope your foot behaves!

That sounds exciting- you got to run in NYC and Chicago! Your foot kind of sounds like mine (even though I know we’re talking about two different issues.) You’re running, but it still kind of hurts sometimes, especially when you wake up in the morning. It must be maddening that this was caused by a fluky accident, whereas I can’t help feeling that mine is my own stupid fault.
How is that Rebecca Kennedy glutes and legs class? I might do more of hers now that I did her core class.
You did a great job of fitting in workouts this week! Hope you have a little downtime coming up.

Avenue GPS is a mess. It’s like a human game of ping pong. At least you didn’t water ski the reservoir!
Glad you got in some great sunrises and always fun to get to see you

    • Coco says:

I was pushing my luck (and my schedule) going up to the reservoir, and then I added the extra bit by exiting at Columbus Circle so I had to book it back down 5th Ave, but the lights cooperated.

I hope to be back again this summer.

I find it so inspiring that you manage to squeeze in all the workouts despite a crazy schedule. I’ll never complain again about getting up “early” (which is 6am…)

Do your colleagues know that you get in a good cardio before early flights and meetings? I wonder how they react – admiring? call you crazy? or maybe they’re also health conscious?

    • Coco says:

Ah, 6 am is my weekend alarm. Most of my colleagues know I’m a crack of dawn runner. It gives me an excuse to skip the “after party” at the bar, since I can’t handle the after-effects of that anymore.

My watch is always a little zooey in NYC and Chicago bc of the buildings too. Sounds like you packed a lot of fitness into a busy week

    • Coco says:

I wonder how people who live there cope with inaccurate Garmin data? Guess we need to ask Erica and Cari!

  7. kookyrunner says:

Just reading all of your travel this past week made me tired! You do such an excellent job of finding ways to fit in fitness while traveling.

I also have to make up yesterday’s Saturday 60, but I heard it was awesome!

  8. Wendy says:

That sunrise photo you got of the riverwalk just reminds me of why I love my city. I’m sure you are exhausted! It has to be a huge adjustment after WFH for the past 2 years. Maybe Zoom isn’t so bad? :p

    • Coco says:

I had to pick up my pace to get to that spot in time to get that shot! The pink faded pretty quickly after that. 😉

  9. I’m grateful I just drive back & forth to my mom’s! It isn’t easy, but it’s easier.

Glad to hear that the foot seems to be improving, sad it’s not there yet. Seems like it’s always something.

I have trouble figuring out what to wear in one week even just being home, LOL!

  10. Kim at Running on the Fly says:

That’s some major traveling! I love those sunrise photos 😉 It’s great that you know your pace (pretty accurately!) for those 60ish minute runs. I know mine, as well, which is why I seldom wear my Garmin during the week, but I am usually on familiar routes LOL. I hope your foot starts to consistently feel better.

    • Coco says:

Thanks. If I were more patient and gave it more time off, it might reward me, but it’s hard to miss spring running weather.

  11. therightfits says:

Oh, I’ll have to check out Kendall’s class! I’ve been on the Tunde challenge forever, so haven’t ventured out much for arms & light weights.

Sorry the foot is still annoying, but wow, you got in some great runs among all that travel. way to go! And yay for post-travel negative covid tests 🙂

  12. Darlene says:

I sometimes miss traveling because you get to un in different places….. but the packing. So hard to be prepared to all weather and all activities.

I think I have to go to NYC in June…

Glad to hear your foot is improving. I wonder if feet are ever totally pain-free?
