Two Years Later

Today marks two years from the day I think of as the start of the Covid-19 shutdown. It was March 13, 2020–Friday the thirteenth, by the way—when everything was shutting down and my office was preparing for us to all work from home for a few weeks.

Two Years Later

Two years later, and we finally are getting back to “normal,” although it doesn’t feel normal yet.

Two years later, and I walked into Starbucks without wearing a mask—but the baristas are still masked, so maybe I should be for their sake? (I am still wearing a mask at the grocery store and church.)

Two years later, and there is plenty of Purell, Clorox wipes and toilet paper to be found, but it all costs a lot more,

Two years later, and some people believe covid is “over,” but I have clients working on vaccines to protect against the next mutants that are sure to come along.

Two years later, and I worry that the desire to put it all behind us will lead us to forget the tragic loss of life and heroic efforts of our health care workers.

Two years later, and I know the politicization of emergency measures taken to limit the devastating impact of this deadly pandemic means that we will be screwed when the next public health threat comes along. Every court decision overturning a mask mandate leaves officials with fewer options—or no options—to cope with whatever comes along next.

Weekly Run Down

Two years later, and I haven’t been back to Cyclebar, Orangetheory, or CorePower Yoga. I’m done with Cyclebar, but hope to return to OTF and CPY someday—maybe soon? In the meantime I’m getting the most out of my Peloton app subscription and basement gym.

The big news in the worlds of Peloton this week was the departure of Chase Tucker. He was one of my first favorite strength and treadmill instructors. I already was doing a lot of his classes for a challenge in my Peloton Breakthrough Crew Facebook Group, but am doing more before the classes get purged (which they have promised will only happen gradually over time).

Monday: Core + 4.0 Scooby Miles + 20 min Glutes/Legs Strength
It was still really warm—in the 60s!—so I had to take Scooby out for a run!

I suffered a few drool bombs for this photo!

Tuesday: Core + Chest/Back + Arms + Yoga
I had a 7 am conference call, so I had to be super-efficient with my workout time. I took Scooby for a walk, but skipped cardio so I could get away without taking a shower. 😉

Peloton Workouts

Wednesday: Core + Full Body Strength + 30 min Ride
I had been looking forward for Leanne and Hannah’s 2-for-1 Women’s History Month ride, and it was a fun one. Now I need to find the 2-for-1 ride they did two years ago—right before the shutdown.

Peloton Workouts

I listened to Tunde’s new podcast while waling Scooby.

Thursday: 5.45 Scooby miles +  15 min Glutes/Leg Strength
When my alarm went off, I thought it was Saturday, and turned it off. When my husband’s alarm went off, I waded through that “what day is it” brain fog and realized it was Thursday! Since it was already almost 6, I took Scooby out right away, and squeezed in a short strength workout before hopping in the shower.

Friday: Core + Strength + 20 min Peloton Ride
I was going into the office so didn’t have as much workout as usual, but I still wanted to get in some cardio, so I opted for one of CDE’s 20 min rides.

Peloton workouts

Saturday:  Core + Barre + 8.25 Treadmill Miles
It was blustery and pouring rain when I woke up, so I did my long run on the treadmill, after warming up with a core class and barre class—working in three classes with Chase.

By the time I finished, it was snowing!

Sunday: 35 min Peloton workouts
Now that I’m going to church again, I don’t have much time for a Sunday morning workout . Today I dragged myself out of bed with that 6 am alarm that felt like 5, and did a few short Peloton workouts after taking Scooby out for a very brisk walk–it was 21F!

Peloton workouts

I think Peloton was confused over what time it was, because I did Jess’s class first at 6:36  DST, then Chase’s class at 6:56, then Matt’s class at 7:07!

A huge thank you to Deborah and Kim for hosting the Weekly Run Down link up.

How are you feeling two years later?

I can’t wrap my head about what has changed on two years. My wfh anniversary is this week. I’m still home. But I think we’ll go back soon.

Running. Alone or with a mask. To races with masks and staggered starts to almost normal.

I’m grateful that I could be safe and not give up too much of my life. But it’s not over yet. Or maybe it never will be.

  2. Kim at Running on the Fly says:

I spent most of Friday in a state of confusion, since I was home with Max. I kept thinking it was Saturday…and yesterday was my “Sunday.” So, now today, with a slight sleep-in (even with the time change), I’m still out of sorts, LOL. I have not done a lot of Chase’s classes, so I need to cherry-pick those. I like his stretching classes a lot!

    • Coco says:

I’ve done all his core classes (first as part of a challenge) — I like that he often includes back move like superman.

If you were in Florida, you would think the pandemic is over. I’m not saying that’s correct, but it’s the general feeling down here. I’ve stopped wearing a mask completely at work. I offer the wear it for every client, but NOT ONE PERSON in the last two weeks has wanted to wear masks. So… we’ll see what happens.
Sounds like the weather was crazy this week. But you got some great workouts in!

    • Coco says:

Florida handled covid a lot differently – that’s for sure. 😉 We’re not wearing masks at work, either. It doesn’t feel comfortable yet though.

  4. Wendy says:

Yep, 2 years ago, I was on my way home from Florida, cutting short my week with my parents because my son had that terrible snowboarding accident. And then all hell broke loose from Covid. I love your reflections. Yes, so much has changed, hasn’t it? I will say that for me personally, the pandemic gave me the gift of trail running. I was just starting to embrace trails, but it wasn’t until the lockdown that I found an escape in the woods. It was just what I needed!

And yes, I’m still wearing my mask at work and the stores. I kinda like not getting sick…

  5. therightfits says:

Like Wendy, I like not getting sick- I will always mask on planes, I had a habit of always getting a nasty cold after traveling, which I’m guessing was from airports/planes. I have started to leave it off occasionally and feel pressure to stop when in the office. We have a work party the week of Boston (the Wednesday before) and I have anxiety thinking about not masking and getting ANY sickness before a marathon. I guess that was always something I worried about, but now more than before…

I enjoyed your reflections back on the two years. I don’t know that I’ll go back to in-person fitness classes again as I have been really happy with Peloton, but I do miss a hot yoga class.

    Scooby drool bomb, ha!

You were very efficient with your workouts this week, nice job!

  6. Nope, don’t really think that COVID is done with us, but many think that they are done with COVID. I looked up the Spanish Flu Pandemic, how long it took to resolve, and kinda figured we’d be in the same boat. Although even with the vaccine it seems it’s going to take longer!

My BIL, the unvaccinated one who thinks the vaccines are going to kill us down the road, really goes on a bender if you suggest he wear a mask — for his own protection! Sign.

Anyway, I’m sorry work curtailed your workouts, but then again, maybe that’s really a good thing. You need a little downtime sometimes!

  7. I did that same SFR class today – I was reminded that I need to return it to my rotation. And, like you, I’m going to be loading up on Chase’s classes before they’re purged. He was definitely one of my early favorites.

It’s amazing to think it was 2 years ago today. It’s been a hell of a 2 yrs! I really appreciated your reflections. While I loved the OTF classes I’m still not sure that I’ll ever go back – I’ve come to really like the flexibility of working out at home.

    • Coco says:

I like my home workouts too, but I know I pushed myself harder at OTF. Plus I have an untouched call package they might still honor. 😉

  8. Marcia says:

I think that 3/13/20 is one of those dates we’ll all remember where we were and what we were up to when the world shut down. Thing 1 was planning to head home for spring break and we had her do an emergency “move out” of her dorm, just in case. That turned out to be a great decision as she did not return to school in person for quite some time. We let our gym membership end in 2020 and we’ve decided not to return.

  9. runswithpugs says:

OMG. Remember that? Just a few weeks. And things haven’t been normal since. Ugh.

I’m so proud of us for getting through as well as we have, but this will definitely be defining for us.

  10. deborahbrooks14 says:

2 years later so much has changed and so much has not changed. I do feel fortunate that our family weathered the storm pretty well and only had minor inconveniences. While it might not be over, I am over it. I will have to return to some of my Chase classes before they are gone! I used to like him early on

  11. Catrina says:

You are right, Coco. Another pandemic like this and it will be total chaos, thanks to a minority who seem themselves as “experts” and spread misinformation.

Here in South Africa, we are still all wearing masks. Even outdoors it is mandatory, although hardly anyone complies with that rule.
In Switzerland, masks are no longer required, except in public transportation and hospitals. Not surprisingly, numbers have surged since, but fortunately not the hospitalization numbers.

I am impressed with your Tuesday workout – all before 7am!!!

  12. kookyrunner says:

2 years later but I often feel like it’s been 5 years because so much happened in those 2 years. It’s crazy to think that 2 years ago I packed up some things from my office for a “2 week lockdown”. We really had no idea what was to come unfortunately.

I was sad to hear that Chase was leaving Peloton, but I did notice he was doing less classes and didn’t post much on social media either, so I had a feeling something might be up. I’m going to see if I have any of his classes bookmarked and will start doing those this week before they get purged.

  13. Wow, 2 years. It really has been crazy. My office has everyone back at work for the most part now, although we are allowed to work one day at home if we’d like to. I think it’s a nice break to WFH for one day a week.
