December Deadlines

Y’all, I don’t know what happened between my relaxing Thanksgiving weekend and this week, but work exploded. Sadly, this isn’t the first time I’ve had crushing December deadlines as clients realize there’s only a few weeks left to finish all those projects that should be done “sometime this year.” I know I’ll get through it, but bear with me.

December Deadlines

I don’t usually vent about work, but this week was vent-worthy.

Monday as I was frantically trying to finish a legal memo, the left lens of my glasses fell out. I joked that I was reading so hard, I broke my glasses. Not only that, but I was so determined to get it done before my next conference call, I just took off my glasses instead of taking a break to fix them.Bitmoji magnifying glass

Monday and Tuesday I came close to burning the midnight oil to meet a self-imposed deadline to finish another project in November. I sent four polished documents off to the client … and she wrote back thanking me and letting me know that she is leaving the company and someone else might take up the project in the New Year ….

Bitmoji work frustration

I wasn’t angry,
but I did feel like throwing my hands up in the air.

Friday I freaked out when I realized an all-day meeting on my calendar next Monday is in Chicago. After verifying that I was expected to be there in person, I frantically made flight and hotel reservations.

Bitmoji panic

Later that day I was calmly on track to finish another project in time to fix dinner—which I hadn’t done all week—when our power went out at 4:30. (Re-insert hands-in-the-air-Bitmoji). When it stayed off for a few minutes, I headed upstairs and chatted with my husband until it was late enough to go out for an early dinner. Scooby, on the other hand, had to dine by candlelight.

Ignore the overflowing recycling bin …

Luckily the power came back on not long after we got home.

Weekly Run Down

So, now you know why I have to workout in the morning. 🙂 My workout time is sacred and puts me in the right mindset to face the rest of my day.

Monday: Lower Body Strength + 30 min Ride
I started the week with a long stack of short workouts. I like starting the week with a solid line-up of lower body strength, and Hannah F always puts me in a good mood on the bike.

We had pleasant weather this week, so I couldn’t resist running longer than usual on my weekday runs

Posing in front of my neighbor’s lights almost felt like stealing.
They had a commercial company put them up!

Wednesday: Full Body Strength
After walking Scooby I pieced together various upper body and lower body strength workouts. Since I was heading into the office I didn’t have time for a ride.

Thursday: Core + 5.25 Scooby Miles

I’m not sure I like the higher resolution in this photo. 😉

Friday:  Corepower Yoga + 30 min Peloton Ride
When I saw I had accidentally let my Corepower Yoga subscription reactivate, I decided it was a sign. My body certainly needed yoga after all the hours I spent sitting at my computer this week. You might thing following up a 30 min yoga class with a 30 min AC/DC ride is an odd combination, but it was just what I needed to get ready for Friday.

If you like AC/DC at all, this was a super fun ride!.

Saturday: 6.65 Scooby Miles
After sleeping in until 6:45, I warmed up with a 10 min Peloton Barre class, and then took Scooby out. It was in the 40s, so opted for long sleeves and shorts.

Sunday: 25 min Strength + 3.6 Scooby Miles
I was hit by to-do list induced insomnia and AWAKE at 4:17. I stayed in bed until almost 5, but had done a stack of Peloton strength workouts and was 1/2 mile into my run when my 6:00 am alarm went off.

This tree was so pretty!

A huge thank you to Deborah and Kim for hosting the Weekly Run Down link up.

Join Deborah and me on Friday for the last Ultimate Coffee Date of 2022!

I’ve got an in-person meeting and dinner at my office in D.C. today, so I may not be able to respond to comments until tomorrow.

Are professional installed holiday lights a thing in your neighborhood?

  1. I hope work calms down for you. At least you are good about getting your runs and workouts done.

Ugh, work sounds insane and stressful! I love the joke about reading so hard you broke your glasses. Are you able to take some time off in January to make up for all this?
You had a solid week of running, And then all that strength thrown in there- great job. It would be easy to let it slide with the work situation, but you got it all done!

I am hoping to wrap things up in time to catch my breath between Christmas and New Year’s, when most of my clients are close.

One good thing about a dark o’clock exercise habit is that I have no interest at all in working at that hour!

  3. wow! You sure did have a crazy week! Now I understand why you have to get up so early to workout 🙂 Hope things calm down for you a bit over these next few weeks

  4. Well, my work week is nowhere close to being as stressful as yours, but I do have to get most of my workouts done in the o’dark hours to get to work on time. I get done quality workouts done after work, but the early a.m. hours give me the added bonus of adrenaline and endorphins:-) Safe travels to Chicago!

    • Coco says:

You get out the door way earlier than I do! I know my body would benefit if I did ^something^ in the late afternoon, but I just can’t.

  5. Wendy says:

I had an awful week at work–it’s been really challenging to work in healthcare these days–and I considered venting about it but for now, I’m channeling it into my runs. Thank goodness I can run again! And yes, I like those morning workouts for that reason as well. I hope you have a calmer week. I wish we could connect when you’re here!

    • Coco says:

I now you are on the front lines. There’s nothing like that kind of stress.

This trip is a mess. I get in Sunday @ 6 pm and leave Tuesday @ 7 am because I basically have meetings from 8-8 on Monday. Hopefully next trip will be less insane!

  6. It’s always such a satisfying feeling to get movement done early in the morning, isn’t it?

Sounds like a very rough week, Coco — especially having to plan an unforseen trip to Chicago! I hope you get to relax just a little soon.

  7. OMG what a work week you had! Thank goodness for those morning workouts right? I really hope things are calmer for you this week.

    • Coco says:

Some days the Peloton classes really are the most fun I have all day. I like my job a lot, but it doesn’t make me laugh much. 😉

  8. Catrina says:

Oh my goodness, that sounds awful, Coco!
On the plus, side those 4 documents for that client leaving the company – at least you can cross them off your to-do list. But still very frustrating.

Enjoy your time in Chicago! I hope you get at least a Starbucks break while you’re there.

  9. kookyrunner says:

Totally understand why you workout in the morning! Like you, I consider that time in the morning to be sacred. So sorry that work has been really, really hectic – I hope that things will slow down eventually so that you can enjoy the holidays at the end of the month.

  10. runswithpugs says:

So many hurdles and frustrations this week. Scooby seems entirely unbothered by his candlelight dinner. <3

Great workouts in spite of everything! I hope this week is more smooth.

  11. Jessie says:

That’s a lot to balance at work! Hopefully it all calms down soon. 40s are the best temps for running! Scooby seems a little confused by the candlelit dinner 🙂

  12. Cari says:

I feel you on year end even without our gala this year.
Scooby looks like he had a romantic dinner.
    Hang in there friend
