Wrapping Up July

I’m wrapping up July in a bit of a funk. Between the slow progress of my Achilles and the fast-spreading delta variant of coronavirus-19, I’m having a hard time being optimistic for my November races. For now I’m taking things one day at time and trying hard to be patient.

Please make plans to join us for coffee next weekend!
We’ll have the link-up open from Friday through Saturday.

Wrapping Up July

OK, 20 miles running is better than zero miles running, but those 20 miles were logged 2 at a time at an easy pace with walk breaks and lots of Scooby stops. Those runs were better than nothing, but not the head-clearing, endorphin-releasing runs I am craving.

At least there was cycling, including two Conte’s Hill Rides and two longer rides. The weekdays rides are on my Schwinn IC4 — usually 20-30 min Peloton classes

Looking ahead to August, I made an appointment with an orthopedist to make sure nothing else is going on with my ankle. I doubt it, but there’s no harm in confirming. In the meantime, I’m going to keep stretching my calves and doing my PT exercises.

Catching our breath at the top of the “golf course” hill.

I’m also going to keep riding to be ready for those Lancaster, PA hills! In addition to the Conte’s Hill Ride, I’ve been including at least one hill-themed Peloton class in my weekly rotation. It’s all paying off, because while I’m out of breath at the top of the golf course hill, there’s no question I’m going to get up it! 😉

I’m so dedicated to my training that when rain interfered with my Sunday cycling plans, I went all in with a 60 min climb ride and a 30 min “fun” ride.

I knew if anyone could get me through a 60 min ride, it would be CDE.

Weekly Run Down

I took it easy at the beginning of the week, recovering from last weekend’s back-to-back bike rides. I also tried to be more purposeful with my strength workouts to let my legs recover between hard days—although looking back at my Tues-Wed-Thursday line-up I may need to try harder!

Monday: Upper body
Tuesday: 2 Scooby Miles + Lower body
Wednesday: 2 Scooby Miles + Indoor cycling + PT
Thursday: Full body
Friday: 2 Scooby Miles + Upper body
Saturday: Conte’s Hill Ride
Sunday: 32.5 Indoor Cycling Miles

  1. It’s good to hear that you’re running even if it’s run/walk to start. We’ve gotta make our comebacks however we can and I’ve learned the hard way that the slower and more methodical, the better.

  2. Echoing Deb’s words above…slow and steady wins the race (so to speak). But, you’ve recovered from previous injuries, so I’m preaching to your choir LOL I’m glad to hear your rally-back is underway and going smooth so far 😉

  3. Lisa says:

Glad you are able to do some running, even though its not as much as you’d like. Not a bad idea to get it checked out by an orthopedist. This week has really made me nervous hearing all the news about the Delta variant and what this fall will be like.

  4. jenny says:

Yeah, any running is better than no running, but I also miss those nice long, exhausting runs. We’ll get back there!
And yes- it’s discouraging about Covid. Everything seemed so hopeful for a while and now we’re back to mask-wearing all the time. UGH!

    • Coco says:

I’m back to minimizing public content too, although that doesn’t mean much since they extended our work from home status anyway.

  5. I am sorry you are mourning the lack of running. 🙁 The Orthopedist visit can’t hurt. I hope it’s at least good news!

  6. any running is always better than no running. I am glad that you finally made an appt w the ortho -can’t hurt! kind of a good month to run less it was pretty brutal w the humidity

  7. So sorry about your long lasting injury. At least you have some scooby runs. Better than none.

It’s so discouraging that people will not get vaccinated

  8. Great job on your running! 20 miles is better than nothing. I’ve never done a 60 minute ride. I don’t think I can manage that long. But you never know, maybe one of these days.

  9. therightfits says:

Scooby stops! My runs with Ruth definitely include lots of Ruth stops, but its not as catchy 🙂

I’m nervous about the Delta variant. I just don’t get why people just won’t get vaccinated…and now we’re going back the other direction.

  10. Renée says:

Such a bummer about your achiles!! I also hope nothing else is wrong but it’s best to just double check and rule everything else out. I am really glad you still have the bike and strength to fall back on! I do hope you will still get to do your races in November though. We had a super spike here in NL and I think our numbers are lower now because people went on holiday (don’t know if you’ve seen the numbers in Spain by the way… but a lot of Dutch people are there…). I fully expect a spike again in September. Which is why I haven’t signed up for anything (though I am still considering the Bridge to Bridge). All I know is, it better not be true and ruin parkrun for us again.

    Hang in there Coco x

    You’re a badass for doing a 60 minute climb ride, that’s awesome!

I can relate to being in a bit of a funk last week. The delta variant is making me extremely nervous. I honestly don’t go anywhere except the supermarket and OTF, but because there’ no longer a mask mandate here, I worry a lot about OTF (even though I still wear my mask for classes).

  12. Marcia says:

I’m sad about the delta variant and that masks seem to be making a comeback in many areas, our county and schools included. Many of the athletes I am coaching for fall races are scrambling/deferring their plans. You are wise to get your ankle checked out. Better safe than sorry. August is one of my least favorite months for a variety of reasons.

  13. I’m glad you’re going to see an ortho – hopefully it’s nothing serious, but better to play it safe. The whole delta variant scenario is starting to rattle me a little and, like you, I wonder about my November half.
