May Miles, June Goals

What a difference a week makes. Last weekend was gloomy and chilly; this weekend was sunny and sweltering! The weather has crossed the line from spring into summer, making it a good time to look back on my May miles and look ahead to my June Goals.

May Miles, June Goals

I blew past my monthly running mileage goal (85 miles) and earned a strong suggestion from my physical therapist to take more days off from running. I think she felt like I was making her job harder, and she’s probably right.

I was surprised at how high my (outdoor) cycling mileage was, but there were five full weekends in May, and we did two rides over Memorial Day weekend. I expect June to be lower.

I think the most meaningful number in my Peloton stats is the minutes working out, but that doesn’t count the stretching and PT exercises I did on my own. I usually do 2-4 classes a day (10 min core, 30-45 min run/ride, 10-20 min strength), so that number adds up quickly. The miles and calories are meaningless, because the app only tracks my outdoor runs using my iPhone data and the calories are an estimate based on what little Peloton knows about me. πŸ˜‰

Despite all my running miles, my Achilles is getting better, and that makes me happy. To make the recovery stick, I need commit to more days off from running and keep up with my physical therapy exercises. So, my June goals include running no more than 5 days a week. I’m also committing to more yoga–at least once a week.

Weekly Wrap

My (undiagnosed) tennis elbow was the main limiting factor for my workouts this week. It’s getting better, but it’s still iffy.

I ran with Scooby Monday (4), Tuesday (5.1), Wednesday (5.1), Friday (3.5), and Saturday (6). Saturday’s run was hard. It was much warmer and more humid than I’ve been used to and my legs felt tired. I cut my loop short and took a few walk breaks, which I almost never do. I think if I had chosen a flatter, shadier route I would have been OK, but this run felt brutal.

Weekly running miles: 23.9

I continued to avoid upper body strength workouts, and even had to be cautious with the Arms + Light Weights workouts using 3 lb weights. I did a 30 min Corepower Yoga Hips + Hamstrings class after my “long” run on Saturday, and that felt really good.

I’m thrilled that Scooby made it into the Global Running Day collage!
Thanks so much to Kim for putting it together.

2021 Global Running Day collage Sunday was a hot one. We rode over to my Mom’s house (~10 miles), and after a short visit with her, took the long way home, and then stopped at our local brewery for a break before the last climb home.

I was just saying something similar to my mom about the weather – it seems like we went from one extreme to the other, lol.

It was fun running with you virtually on Global Running Day! πŸ™‚

So happy to hear that your Achilles is feeling better and that the PT exercises are paying off. Awesome job on your May stats from Peloton. I love that they send out that email every month. It’s a great way to see everything you’ve accomplished!

  2. wow you certainly did crush it this month! Sounds like your PT may have a point there. Looks like someone might be overdoing it? I use Garmin and Strava to track my mileage. I like the Peloton stats but I don’t do the runs. Looks like we will have a cooler week ahead!

  3. therightfits says:

Have you shared what PT exercises you’re doing? Mine was sore after my 20 yesterday, so I’m looking for some new things to do to help stay on top of it!

Interesting that your PT wants you to back off…

Love the bike ride to the local brewery! Sounds like a fun afternoon!

  4. Wendy says:

I like that new Sunday routine!! My oldest son got a bike and he lives in the city, so I’m going to bring my bike down there one of these days. We’ve got some plans for beers after our ride!

  5. Darlene says:

Glad to hear your elbow feels better.

My May was my lowest mileage in a long time but I skipped several long runs… I’m ok.

    Great ideas for biking.

    I’m in a biking slump.

  6. I definitely don’t track calories burned! it’s usually way off anyway. I no longer track food at all. But I do look at other data, as you know, and I find that helpful (not about weight, about making sure I’m recovering adequately.

Hopefully soon everything will feel better!

Shade is everything when it’s hot. The place I met my friend at today is very shady, and that’s why I chose it. Unfortunately there’s not a lot of shade in my neighborhood . . . and they’ve really thinned out the brush at the bike path.

Still the gnats haven’t really multiplied yet, and that makes me happy.

    • Coco says:

Once they take the Bradford pears out of my neighborhood, shade will be hard to find because so many of the trees are Bradfords. For a longer run, I need to drive to the bike path for shade.

      • Our subdivision was built around the late 70s. Many many trees have come down since we moved here. Shade can be so hard in summer! But it can make or break a run. Cloud cover too. Even if it’s not technically summer yet . . .

  7. Kim at Running on the Fly says:

We’re trying to figure out a biking routine for the summer…we had so much fun yesterday with our friends (even in the brutal heat and wind). The only real issue is Max…we need to make sure my parents or sister are available to check on him mid-day if we’re gone the entire day. Your Sunday routine looks nice to me! My Saturday run was a tough one as well.

  8. Lisa says:

Glad to hear your achilles is getting better! That Sunday routine sounds like a really fun day.

  9. jenny says:

Well, you’re running a lot and your achilles is getting better, so I’d say that’s a win!
I definitely think you’ve got a new Sunday routine there.

  10. Your new Sunday routine looks like a fun one to me!

Congrats on an awesome May! You crushed your runs and workouts! Good to hear that your Achilles is holding up well.

  11. Marcia says:

Glad your achilles is improving! A ride to your mom’s followed by a brewery visit sounds like a great new tradition to me!

  12. Hooray for getting better! Looking at those stats should make you feel good – so much upward movement from last month!

  13. runswithpugs says:

Great job! I usually just track running/waking miles. My big June goal is to run/walk/jog 1 mile a day for 30 days. I am very much on track!

  14. Oh yeah a ride to the brewery should be a Sunday routine. Great job in May! I had forgotten about the email from Peloton with each month’s data but I found it. I mainly track my running mileage.
