Can you believe it’s already time for the first Runfessions of 2021? After the January I’ve had, I definitely need this opportunity to cleanse my soul soles at Marcia’s runfessional.
Also join me in the Fit Five Friday Link-Up with Darlene, Michelle, Renée, Jenn, and Zenaida.
Deborah and I will be hosting the February Ultimate Coffee Date next weekend. We’ll open the (link-up) doors Friday February 5th, and keep the coffee brewing.
Fractured Runfessions
I’ve shared the story of my fractured rib, but I still need to runfess what I did.
I was one mile into my run, tripped after crossing a street (I think I was looking for oncoming traffic instead of at the curb in front of me), and did a spectacular face plant onto the side walk. I fell so hard I got hole in my right mitten, a hole in the left knee of my leggings, and felt so jarred I wondered if should call an Uber. But I wanted to see the Washington Monument at sunrise so badly, I decided to at least try to walk the 1/2 block further. Once I got moving, I felt like I could run, so I did.
But I didn’t stop at this amazing view.
I kept going to the Washington Monument
—another mile each way–
so I could enjoy this view as well.
In church, confession involves being repentant, which means not only being sorry for what you did, but also “turning away” from sin and committing to doing better. I hope runfessions doesn’t have the same requirements, because I’m not sure I could honestly say I wouldn’t do the same thing again. 🙂
I did take a few days off from running, but I runfess it was less than a week before I was testing out the treadmill. Thankfully, running doesn’t seem to bother my fractured rib, although I’m sticking to the treadmill to avoid another fall.
From before the fall.
While I miss my Scooby miles, I runfess I haven’t been too sad about not being able to run outside in our sub-freezing temperatures. I runfess I’m actually enjoying the chance to take more Peloton treadmill classes.
On the other hand, I runfess I am somewhat bummed that I am already behind on my 2021 mileage goal. In an attempt to not push myself too hard, I’ve been alternating treadmill running with indoor cycling and keeping my treadmill runs to 30 minutes. I know I shouldn’t even think about my mileage until I feel 100% better, but it’s hard to let go of those numbers.
My goal is to average at least 85 miles/month.

Have you pushed through injuries you shouldn’t have?
I would have kept running too! That’s what we do, right? I hope you give yourself grace–you can’t accumulate miles while you’re healing. <3
Indeed, that is what we do! I’m trying to cut myself the slack I’d cut someone else.
Love that DC pic. Sorry about your fall!
I have continued running after a fall…too many times to remember! I even finished a race that I had broken my foot. The things we runners do.
Your mileage will pick up when you are fully healed.
You are certainly taking advantage of Peleton.
Oh, I think you beat me, since it was your FOOT! SMH.
Lol
I probably would have kept going too – that shot of the Washington Monument is stunning!
I let go of my January mileage goal too in the name of healing my hip. I have no doubt you’ll make up for it after you heal.
It’s definitely worth it to be healthy for spring running!
i have made the mistake of pushing through injuries that I know I should not have. I vow to never do that again. It has not gone well for me. I would just stop looking at those numbers until you feel better. It’s not like you have anything to train for!
True!
I don’t set mileage goals for that very reason. This 6-month IL Criss Cross Challenge is testing my mindset, but it’s running & walking inclusive (and I’m also including half of my elliptical miles as well)…so it’s keeping me active without any excess running required. But, I can understand what you’re feeling. My two rib issues were located in spots that made deep breathing difficult, so I had no choice but to take things easy while they healed.
Yeah, I’m lucky it doesn’t bother me. And while super deep breaths hurt at first, they no longer do, so I am on the med.
Oh my goodness!!! After falling and fracturing your rib, you continued your run?!?! You are amazing! It seems like you haven’t missed a beat, going right back to your training after a few days off. Maybe your Scooby runs will suffer? I think it might be ouch-y if he pulled on his leash.
I did give up Scooby miles — too much risk of another fall, even though he hasn’t made me fall yet. I’m even careful walking him.
I know exactly how you feel about missing a monthly mileage target! Luckily, you have 11 months to make up for it.
I had to cut a run short today because we were caught in freezing rain and were drenched. And now I’m obsessing how I can make up the missed miles.
Hah, I knew you’d get me. You’re right, 11 months is a long time to make it up — even if I’m off for most of Feb too.
Oh man, that sounds like a nasty fall! I don’t blame you for sticking to the treadmill for now to play it safe. Also, it’s so cold outside anyway so running indoors sounds like a much better option!
Definitely on days like today – 20s with a gale warning!
I have pushed through injuries and regretted it… but the thing with a fractured rib is that generally you can still run. My friend Marco did the same after crashing his bike and still ran again a few days later. Runners are nuts ;-). but honestly, please don’t worry about your mileage. You’ll make it up!
Yes, we are! 🙂
Its great that you can still run, but smart to not push it! I know its hard, but try not to worry about your mileage right now. We still have 11 more months of the year!
I keep reminding myself that — and that my goal is arbitrary. It’s still hard.
Many years ago I did push through an injury I shouldn’t have, but that was through ignorance. i really paid the price with painful running for many months (although I could run).
I have a friend that fell on a run & broke a rib. And yes, she continued on with her run. Luckily that’s not a decision I’ve had to make!
Poor Scooby. We’ve only been able to walk Bandit on & off because of the barely there temps. He’s all antsy!
When it’s really cold, Scooby can play in our back yard, because the ground is too frozen to get muddy — so he’s lucky that way when it’s in the 20s. 😉
When it’s really cold, Bandit just does his business, LOL — he has no desire to stay out there in these temps!
Oh goodness, I had no idea you had cracked a rib. I’m glad you are still able to get around!
Me too!
I’ll absolve you for continuing on that run- I would have done the same thing. And I doubt the outcome would have been any different if you had stopped immediately. Glad you’re still able to get some treadmill miles in while it heals!
Well, that’s true. The damage was done, and i didn’t make it worse.
Those are great photos! Just gorgeous. I would have also kept going too. I was hoping to get 1,200 miles this year which is 100 per month and I also am behind. I have 11 months to make it up. I am sure I will once the streets and sidewalks are clear.
I ran that much last year, but cut my goal back to leave room for more cycling days. But, I didn’t run much last Jan-Mar and still ended up with a high total.
You did great last year!
Again I’m so sorry about the face plant. It sounds really painful. I won’t go so far as to say the pics are worth it but they are gorgeous.
Ugh. Those views, though!
I’m glad your rib isn’t giving you too much trouble. I confess/runfess that reading about the experience made me somewhat queasy. Bad memories!
I hear you about keeping up the miles despite being injured! I’ve got 2 injuries right now as well, however I’ve decided to do most of my miles walking for now instead of running. It takes longer to get the miles in but until I see my doctor again, I’m trying to play it safe and not exacerbate things. I hope your ribs heal soon though! Your pics are gorgeous – makes want to set my alarm earlier for tomorrow…
