Birthday Cake Coffee Date

My birthday is still a week away, but I’m already thinking about birthday cake. I’m going to imagine I’m enjoying a slice while we get together for our virtual November Coffee Date. My co-host Deborah is celebrating her birthday this month too–as are a number of our coffee date regulars–so there are plenty of reasons to celebrate!

My son makes a mean lemon pound cake!

Birthday Cake Coffee Date

If we were having coffee, I would ask what your favorite type of cake is. Honestly, I’m not a huge cake person–I’m much more tempted by homemade cookies or apple pie–but I do love a good piece of birthday cake. My son’s lemon pound cake is my favorite, but Aunt Betty’s pound cake (from Sam Sanders) is a close second.

Aunt Betty's Pound Cake

I had to use my biggest bundt pan for Aunt Betty’s pound cake

I think devil’s food cake is delicious too. When I can’t decide, a nice selection of birthday cupcakes means I don’t have to!

If we were having coffee, I would show you my favorite coffee mug, even though it belongs to my husband.

Engineer Coffee mug

Anyone else have the joy of living with an engineer?

As true as this mug can be, it is nice to live with someone who can fix almost anything–even if they insist on taking the time to do it right. 😉

If we were having coffee, I would show you the puzzle I did in November. Unlike October’s puzzle, this one came together quickly–in just a few days.

Edward Gory Puzzle

Edward Gory’s artwork is quirky and creepy. When I first saw it on Amazon (<<affiliate link) I thought it would be a fun one to do during Halloween month.

If we were having coffee, I would ask if I’m the last person runner to “discover” the Ali On The Run Show podcast. I’m sure I heard of it before, but since I’m not interested in podcasts about running (go figure!) I never checked it out. If I knew it is a podcast about runners, I would have listened sooner. Ali On the Run PodcastLuckily, I saw Christine Yu‘s Facebook post about her Ali On The Run Show interview, and of course loved “catching up” with her. Then someone in one of my Peloton Facebook groups mentioned a show with my favorite instructor, Jess Sims. By then I’d “subscribed,” and was scrolling through the list of past episodes when I saw a recent one with Courtney Carter! So, yeah, I must be the last person.

What would you tell me over coffee?

Do you have an Ali On The Run Show podcast episode I’ve missed?

  1. Um, no, you’re not the last person, because I almost never listen to podcasts. Since I don’t listen to them on the run (or walking) when would I have time? Although I do listen to audiobooks on the many trips to mom. They’ve been a life saver.

I actually prefer cupcakes to whole cakes — with just the two of us, a cake lasts forever. Chocolate & PB please. 🙂 Love cookies but don’t have much control around them. Not a huge pie person — it’s not that I don’t like pie, it’s just that I prefer cookies, brownies, anything chocolate & PB (although I’ve made some mean chocolate PB pies, too).

I live with an engineer too. My Dad was a patent attorney. So both a lawyer AND an engineer. It is great to have someone so handy at home, because I am most decidedly not handy.

I listen to Podcasts when walking Scooby or doing stuff around the house. You’re right, cupcakes are a better size than whole cakes if you’re not having a party.

      • Since I’m often walk-in bandit with Mr. Judy, I don’t listen to anything then. I usually seem to be busy with other stuff around the house! I started a Grisham audiobook while I was at the vet with Bandit (annual). That’s what I’ll be listening to today.

  2. Wendy says:

I’ve heard of Ali but since I don’t listen to podcasts, I haven’t heard hers! If I have to pick between listening to someone talking and music, I choose music.

When my youngest declared his major, he chose chemistry. I asked him why he didn’t choose chemical engineering and he said he doesn’t ‘think’ like an engineer. lol. Not sure what he meant but it was a thoughtful response!

  3. As much as I Love running, I’m not a podcast person, even ones with a running theme. I know, #mybad. That puzzle looks fun…I love searching for all the quirky images! My hubby isn’t an engineer, but is very handy at fixing things around the house. I like cake, but it’s definitely not my dessert of choice…I’d go for a white cake, though. And cut me a slice off the corner (with plenty of frosting).

  4. Marcia says:

I’ve run with a couple of podcasts, but I runfess I prefer music. I am not interested in running ones either. Haha! Ooooh I LOVE lemon pound cake. It’s been a very long time since I had some. Yum! Happy Birthday!

  5. Catrina says:

I thought I was the only person who doesn’t listen to podcasts… but I see I’m in good company, haha!
I LOVE lemon pound cake. And I love cookies. My favourite cookies are the shortbread biscuits by Walker’s.
That puzzle is totally creepy – truly fitting for Halloween! How many pieces did it have?

  6. I don’t listen to podcasts but I have heard that’s a good one. I’ve been doing books on tape while I walk though and they entertain me. I am so looking forward to birthday cake! I’ve been really diligent about my nutrition the last 6 weeks and really have not had any dessert. Believe it or not, I am simple when it comes to birthday cake. Yellow cake with chocolate frosting is my favorite! Happy birthday to both of us

Welcome to the Ali on the Run party! I found it a few years ago and it was my gateway to learning more about running. Such a good show. I love Edward Gorey, Mystery, and jigsaw puzzles so when I saw there were only 11 of them left on Amazon it was an instant buy. And yes, I live with a software programmer and two future programmers/engineers so I get it…

    • Coco says:

Hah! You’ve got a houseful, huh? My kids aren’t engineers, but they were both math majors. And they are both hyper-logical! I hope you enjoy the puzzle.

  8. Darlene says:

I’ve following Ali for over 10 years due to a common friend. Emily (her friend) was the daughter of my Friend (Andrea who just died) and she lives in NYC. So I’ve listened to all her podcasts. I love her guests and she is refreshingly upbeat.

Cake??? I like lemon. I really like pies.

Maybe we can have a birthday ZOOM.

    After the election, though!!!!

  9. kookyrunner says:

I am kicking myself for reading your blog before eating breakfast because now all I want is cake…delicious pound cake to be exact, lol.

I don’t listen to podcasts often but I’ve heard that her podcast is excellent!

  10. You can keep the cake – I’ll just have the frosting. Some of my friends just give me ramekins filled with frosting! Know your audience.

I follow Ali’s blog and social but I don’t listen to her podcast. I’ll have to check it out.

    Happy Birthday month!

    • Coco says:

LOL, you are welcome to my frosting! Ali has interviews with some very interesting people — her On The Job series is pretty cool!

  11. Happy birthday month to so many of us bloggers! I love chocolate cake with white icing, but like you, prefer freshly made cookies (apple pie is pretty yummy, too). Yep, I’m married to an engineer as well.

  12. runswithpugs says:

Yay for birthdays! I am an ice cream girl, through and through. For my birthday this year, I got a frozen custard cake and it was what dreams are made of.

I have one more puzzle to build.

  13. Michelle D. says:

You’re not the last…I haven’t heard of Ali’s podcast. I have to admit, while I’ve tried a couple of different podcasts, I can’t seem to stick with them. I really prefer listening to music when I’m running.

That pound cake looks so so good!

You continue to find the best puzzles! I need to staff a few away for the winter months to come.

    Enjoy your birthday month 🙂

    • Coco says:

Listening to her interviews can be like running with chatty friends — check it out. I need to get more puzzles for the months ahead.

  14. Laurie says:

Happy early birthday! Your son’s lemon poppy pound cake looks yummy, but I am with you – why pick just one flavor when you can get an assortment of cupcakes? My hubby’s birthday is this month too. He usually requests chocolate cake with chocolate icing, which I am happy to make. You are not the last one to discover Ali on the Run. I must check it out!

  15. Cari says:

    Happy birthmonth to us!
I’m not the biggest fan of Ali’s podcast, even though I read her blog and love her as a person. Did just listen to one On the Job series with a museum archivist because #museumnerd. Love some of her major event ones, but overall her guests don’t resonate with me and my podcast brain.
mm lemon poppy is such a good combination. Not a cake or cupcake person either unless it’s cinnamon cake. Give me a giant cookie any day

    • Coco says:

I just tried a new apple cake recipe that’s pretty good — and cinnamony.

I can see how Ali wouldn’t be for everyone. I prefer more diverse voices, but have enjoyed her interviews with diverse women.

  16. Happy early birthday! My grandmother used to make this amazing 7-up cake, it’s like an extremely sweet pound cake lol, definitely a favorite of mine! I’m also an engineer but I’m not the kind that can fix everything lol! I am good at reading directions, haha. Thanks for hosting 🙂

  17. Farrah says:

I hope you had an awesome birthday! <3 That pound cake looks awesome! I'm not sure what my favorite type is (does ice cream cake count?).

I'm in the middle of half a billion podcasts but have been hooked on a whole lotta shows lately so it's always a battle between which one gets to win (lately it's been the shows…).
