Subdued September Runfessions

I was all for holding church outside for as long as possible, but now that we’ve had a taste of fall weather, I’m rethinking my commitment to bundle up for worship. I’m grateful the runfessional at Marcia’s Healthy Slice is protected from the weather so I don’t need to dig out gloves for my somewhat subdued September runfessions.

Thanks to Lacey and Miranda for the Fairytales and Fitness Friday Five link up.

Deborah and I will be hosting the October Ultimate Coffee Date next weekend. We’ll open the (link-up) doors Friday October 2nd, and keep the coffee brewing.

Subdued September Runfessions

I runfess that it’s been a struggle to maintain my mojo for anything. After 6 months, the tedium of my staying-safer-at-home lifestyle is wearing on me. Even my September runfessions feel subdued.

I runfess that although I downloaded a coupon and browsed the website, I couldn’t bring myself to buy anything during the Athleta Friends & Family sale. As much as I love the Athleta clothes I have, I don’t always love everything I try on. I just can’t get excited about leggings I can’t feel, with pockets I can’t make sure don’t bulge in the wrong place. I’m sure I’ll make up for it when I finally can shop in person again.

Circa 2014 and still a go-to for cold weather running.

I runfess that I am ready to drop my monthly goal of running 100 miles. It got me through five months of pandemic running, but now that the weather is getting cooler I want to ramp up my long runs again, which means I need to take more rest days. While I can run 100 miles in a month without running every day, the need to make sure I balance out rest days with longer runs takes the joy out of running.

At least I’m sure to beat my October 2019 mileage.

I runfess that I got a late start working on Wednesday so I could take a live Peloton class for my 100th run, in the hopes of getting a shout-out from the instructor.

100th Peloton Run

I was a bit concerned because Olivia didn’t start looking at the “digital” participants (those of us without a Peloton tread joining via the app) until about halfway through the class, but she saw my milestone! If you take this class, listen for her shout-out to “Got2Run4Me” about 20 min in.

I runfess that without fall racing, it is all about Peloton goals for me. The leaders of my unofficial Pelothon Breakthrough Crew Facebook group have set up an October core challenge to do all the core classes from the Breakthrough Crew instructors–there are 29 of them, so we get two days off.

Why does Chase have to have so many 20 min classes?

Do you have new goals for fall?

Yeah. This pandemic is wearing me down. With no challenge I don’t walk as much. With no races I don’t run as much. My 1000 mile yearly goal may have died with my recent back injury. Oh well.

    We go on.

Maybe I’ll feel better after nov 3.

  2. MCM Mama says:

I totally get the subdued feeling. I’m just so over being basically stuck at home and sad about what it’s going to be like when the weather is awful. So, for the moment, we are getting outside as much as we can!

    • Coco says:

Yes, the weather now has been great! I’m sure we will learn to bundle up and enjoy the winter weather too. I did stock up on SkirtSports winter stuff. 😉

  3. Marcia says:

I was just thinking the same. Every week seems just like the one before it. 7+ months later, here we still are. It’s nuts. Glad you got your milestone shoutout!

  4. The weeks and months do seem to just blend into each other. At least we have the change of seasons now to give us something to look at. You know those Peloton goals keep me motivated. Congrats again on your 100 it’s always fun to get a shout out

  5. kookyrunner says:

Congrats on you 100th run and I love that you got a shout out! That October core challenge looks really good!

I agree with you about lacking mojo – mine seems to come and go in waves each week. I decorated my WFH station a little bit (just added some mini pumpkins). I thought it might put a smile on my face, and it did!

  6. Catrina says:

I’m staring at that Core-tober Challenge and wondering if I could even get through a week of that. Some of Chase’s 20 minute sessions are labelled as “intensive”, too.
I know someone who will have abs of steel in November!

How about if you plan something fun for October – some kind of getaway weekend with your husband. Just to get out of the routine.
I did two weekends like that in the summer and it really helped to get my mojo back.

    • Coco says:

I was so intimidated to do a 20 min core class, but they do a good job of mixing things up. I would love to do a get-away, but the planning is overwhelming. My husband hasn’t even eaten outside anywhere …

  7. Michelle D. says:

Too funny I mentioned that core challenge in my runfessions as well. Should be a good one! Congrats on your 100th run and for the shoutout 🙂

I so get what you’re saying about feeling subdued – the culmination of the past few months is really starting to hit me. Sigh…

  8. Kim at Running on the Fly says:

I’m at a total impasse with goals for October (or even the remainder of 2020). I’m taking things slow with my foot, and with no races happening, there is no reason to rush anything. I’m just hoping Winter holds off as long as possible so I can continue my outdoor biking … pretty sure the stationary bike is gonna feel like the treadmill to me …

  9. Laurie says:

I absolutely can identify with your first runfession. I certainly didn’t think way back in March that we would still be in pandemic mode in September!

I don’t have any goals for this fall, other than to maintain fitness. I have a trail 25k in January that hasn’t been canceled. Yet. I would love to stay in the kind of shape where I could do that race if it really happens.

  10. Wendy says:

I’m starting an October challenge for myself–donating $1 for every mile I run to a breast cancer charity. Hoping to hit the big 100. Maybe more. I never thought I’d be running 100 mile months, but I too have hit that number every month but one for the last 6 months. It’s a silver lining from this whole lockdown thing.

I looked at Athleta and couldn’t find a thing i wanted. In fact, I haven’t bought anything to wear–clothes or workout–until recently when i splurged on a pair of INB shorts and a sweater at TJMaxx.

  11. Birchwood Pie says:

I runfess that it’s getting all too common for me to get back from my runs right at 9 when work starts. I used to at least get home in time to shower before work, now it’s more like getting showered after the first round of emails. In a former life I used to finish my workouts an entire hour before I had to leave for work.

  12. runswithpugs says:

It’s hard to escape getting sucked into the monotony. There are days I feel like I could just lay on the couch and not move. I’m not even sorry about it.

I have had to buy new running clothes. Seems I’ve gone down a size. I’ve been holding out because I can’t try anything on, and I don’t know how returns will work, but i finally just took advantage of an Old Navy sale, so wish me luck.

  13. Lisa says:

I totally know what you mean about just feeling subdued after so many months of this. At least in the spring we were hopeful that it wouldnt last that long and we had summer to look forward to. Now we have colder weather, and the holidays aren’t going to be as exciting, and we know that we are going to be dealing with this for a long time.
That must have been fun to take a live class and get a shout out!

    • Coco says:

The live class really was fun! I think the persistence of the pandemic combined with the political climate is making me dread the next few months.

  14. Well, I did my virtual 10k so goals right now. Or no running goals, anyway. I’m working on other stuff though.

I had things I wanted to buy at Athleta during the friends & family sale, too, but ultimately I didn’t buy anything. Their return policy is pretty generous, though.

Our mornings are definitely cold now. Brrrr to outside services!

  15. Cari says:

Yeah, I feel you on no mojo. Im backsliding into some spring habits, but at least I can run now. Will your church continue outside or they’ll go indoors and you’ll need to stream?
Can you not shop in person, or you’re just not ready? I clothes shopped a bit for necessities, but once was curbside pickup (second pair of shorts I owned) and once the store was empty save for staff.
