Celebrating Global Running Day In Philadelphia

This week work took me to Philadelphia for a conference, which means I got to celebrate Global Running Day in Philadelphia.

It was all the more fitting to be celebrating Global Running Day in Philadelphia, because the city was celebrating Immigrant Heritage Month. On Tuesday, I saw this heart come to life as volunteers helped people add a flag sticker representing their home country. That’s also why Benjamin Franklin Parkway was lined with flags from different countries.

It also seems fitting to be recapping my Global Running Day run on Pentecost. Our collect calls it the day God “opened the way of eternal life to every race and nation by the promised gift of the Holy Spirit.”

Celebrating Global Running Day In Philadelphia

I’m glad I had Global Running Day to inspire me to get out for a run, because my legs were trashed tired from logging over 15,000 steps walking around the city on Tuesday–in heels. I knew I wanted to run to the Rocky statue, and had a vague idea I would pick up the Schuylkill River Trail and then loop back through the city to my hotel.

It was early enough that no other tourists were at the Rocky statue.

The view along the river trail is pretty urban,
but I loved how the sunrise made 30th Street Station glow.

I had to climb stairs to get back up to the street,
and was greeted by this fun Phillies mural.

The old City Hall building is always gorgeous.

After cutting through Love Square I ran back along Benjamin Franklin Parkway
to my hotel–see all the flags?

It was a great way to earn my Global Running Day badge on Garmin Connect.

Weekly Run Down

In addition to my trip to Philadelphia, my usual workout schedule was impacted by my husband being out of town all week (so I had more Scooby duty) and the Lawyers Have Heart 5K on Saturday.

Monday: I ran from my office to the Capitol, and noticed all the flags were at half-staff to honor those killed at the Virginia Beach municipal building. 🙁

Tuesday: Strength Workout
After walking Scooby I had time for a full strength workout before heading to the train station.

Wednesday: 5 miles run for Global Running Day

Thursday:  Short Strength Workout
I was so tired from more walking around Philly on Wednesday. I decided to skip yoga and did an easy workout at home after walking Scooby, including lots of stretching and foam rolling.

Friday: Very Short Strength Workout
I needed another easy day ahead of the Lawyers Have Heart 5K on Saturday. I squeezed in a 20 minute workout after walking Scooby, focusing on my light PT exercises and core.

Saturday: Lawyers Have Heart 5K + 21 mile bike ride
I’ll recap the race soon, but will tell you now that the weather was as good as can be expected this time of year, and I pretty much nailed my goal.

Since the race started at 7:15 I was home by 9:00–even with a stop at Starbucks. It was supposed to rain on Sunday, so I decided to join my husband on a bike ride. It felt amazing!

Sunday: 6.45 mile run
The rain held off, and it was so cool I canceled my Cyclebar class and headed out for a run.

Thanks to everyone who has supported the American Heart Association through my Lawyers Have Heart fundraising page or my Facebook fundraising page — there’s still time to make a donation.

Thanks to Deborah and Kim for hosting the Weekly Run Down link up for recapping our workouts and staying accountable and motivated.

It’s odd, it seemed like an “off” week — maybe b/c my husband was gone — but I really had a lot of fun!

  2. Kim at Running on the Fly says:

I love seeing all your Philly pics, they reminded me of my trip there last fall for the RnR Your weekend was busy! The 5K, the ride, AND the run this morning. Thanks for linking with us, Coco!!

    • Coco says:

Philly has some beautiful old buildings — it’s really fun to run around. I had to make the most of this weekend’s weather!

  3. Wendy says:

It’s hard to top running in DC, and I love how you made the most of your Philly trip! Congrats on that 5k this morning! Wow, that was fast!

  4. Marcia says:

You definitely nailed that 5k! So speedy! Philly looks like a perfect place to celebrate GRD. I celebrated on my local trails.

Philly was such a great city for your Global Running Day run! I really love that city – that’s why I normally run a race there every year, lol.

Congrats on that super speedy 5K on Saturday!

  6. Renée says:

OMGosh what an amazing place to be on Global Running Day. I’ve only been to Philly once, but I of course also had to run up the steps to the Rocky statue. It was pouring rain as well, but it had to be done. I’d love to go back. Apparently my great-grandparents families both arrived in Philadelphia from Scotland and Wales and much of my family (whom I never knew) lived in and around the area, later moving to Pittsburgh. It’s a place I definitely want to revisit, especially a particular graveyard where I believe my great-grandmother is buried.

I didn’t put the two together that you ran your 5K AND biked on the same day! whoo hoo! well done on your race!

    • Coco says:

It sounds like you need to plan a trip to PA — if you could time it for the Farm to Fork Fondo you’d be golden! The weather Saturday was just too good to resist.

  7. Darlene says:

The only I went to Philly, it rained the whole weekend. I need a re-do.

Of course, I ran on Global running day. It was an ice cream run and it didn’t rain during the run!!!

Congrats on the 5k and meeting your goal. Can’t wait to read about it.

  8. Cari says:

Yay for a solo Rocky selfie — so hard.
I haven’t explored Philly properly in decades. I should fix that. Last time I was there for a museum exhibit I was partially hampered due to a minor leg procedure.
Oh that’s why the flags are half staff. I took note of that at Soldiers & Sailors Saturday and my brother thought it was the West Point cadet but was probably Va. Beach.
Off to donate, I think I forgot

  9. Chaitali says:

Sounds like a fun run in Philadelphia! Though I’m impressed that you were able to walk all those steps in heels 🙂 And Lawyer’s Have Heart had a great medal this year.

  10. Organic Runner Mom says:

fun way to celebrate, exploring a different city by foot!

  13. For the third year in a row I didn’t run that day. It keeps falling on my rest days and my cross training days

  14. Great job achieving your goal! I’ve never run a race in Philly. And I’m not sure if I ended up running on GRD!

  15. runswithpugs says:

Great work! I love running in cities and Philly is a great town for it. So glad you got to log your mlies there.

I did get in a run on Global Running Day. I was hoping to join a group, but ended up just doing some miles on the treadmill at our hotel. Not my preferred method, but it did the trick.

  16. I’d love to get some time in Philly for a run. I’ve been to Philly a handful of times, but I’ve yet to manage a run there. Great to run into you at the LHH race!
