After a few days at home, I headed back to downtown Miami to spend another week working out of our Miami office. I had early meetings the first few days, but Thursday morning I had no specific commitments before my flight home. Instead of trying to find the right bridge to Miami Beach, I decided to go running in Brickell Miami towards Virginia Key and Key Biscayne.
Now that’s a Miami view!
Brickell Avenue is lined with tall bank buildings, gated condo complexes, and high-end hotels. All in all, it seemed like a nicer business district than downtown Miami, but I did notice that I didn’t see any Starbucks!
Running In Brickell Miami
Earlier in the week I spent some time on Map My Run trying to figure out a route and destination. I decided to run down Brickell Avenue to the bridge to Virginia Key and Key Biscayne, and then try to run closer to the water on my way back when it would be lighter. It wasn’t clear from the map whether there was a pedestrian section of the bridge, but when I got close I followed other runners to the right place.
There were lots of cyclists on the Rickenbacker Causeway to Key Biscayne
The first leg of the Rickenbacker Causeway takes you to Hobie Island Beach Park North. It’s a pretty small spit of land that’s mostly parking lot and water access.
After following various sidewalks to dead ends and taking a few photos, I decided to run on to the highest point of Powell Bridge, which leads to Virginia Key. It was a perfect goal since my Garmin hit 4 miles when I got there.
Heading back, I stayed on Brickell Avenue for the first mile, and then cut down side streets towards the water. Of course, there were lots of photo stops.
After accidentally getting trapped in a private pier, I found my way to the River Walk Trail across from Brickell Key.
Those condos are on Brickell Key
I took one last photo from the drawbridge that lead back to downtown Miami.
I took the long way back to my hotel so my Garmin would hit 9 miles, but later realized it wan’t very accurate close to the high rises.
Some of the detours were real; some are random gps signals.
All in all, this was a good running route, but the bridge was 2 miles from my hotel, so I couldn’t have done this on a normal work day.
Weekly Run Down
The rest of my week included several hotel gym workouts and enjoying glorious spring weather back home.
Monday: strength workout
I had the gym to myself and took my time with a 60 minute strength workout.
Tuesday: treadmill incline intervals (5 miles)
I logged 5 miles on the treadmill doing incline intervals, running 2 min at incline (3/4/5%) followed by 1 min recovery, twice.
I cranked up the air conditioners, but it still got warm!
Wednesday: strength workout
I had the gym to myself again–until I was finished and ready to take a selfie. This photo crops out the guy on the elliptical.
Yes, I did wear the same clothes twice.
Thursday: 9 (?) mile run in Miami
Friday: strength workout
Back at home, I canceled my Friday OTF class so I could take Scooby for a walk and do a light strength workout before facing a long day at the office.
Saturday: 22 mile bike ride
We joined the Conte’s Old Town ride–the glorious spring weather drew a crowd.
Sunday: Orange Theory Fitness
I was #5 on the waiting list for a 9:30 class, so I headed over after church with my fingers crossed. After the 5 minute waiting period I got to take the class–which turned out to be a “careful what you wish for” scenario, since the treadmill workout was Orange Everest. We raised the incline 1% every minute until we maxed out at 15%, and then dropped it down by 2% every minute until we got back to 2%, and then emptied the tank with a 1 minute “push” and 1 minute “all out” effort.
That dip in my heart rate shows where
I switched to walking at 14 and 15% incline.
I think I earned the most “red” points ever!
Thanks to Deborah and Kim for hosting the Weekly Run Down link up for recapping our workouts and staying accountable and motivated.
We’d love to see you at the April Ultimate Coffee Date next weekend!
Any run that includes palm trees is a good one! It’s fun to explore new places on feet. Great looking crew that you bike with too! Your variety of workouts are fun to see!
The Conte’s rides are great – everyone is friendly and supportive. I do love my different activities for different reasons!
I am almost ready to get back outside on my bike again! It’s fun exploring cities on foot. Great job staying so active while traveling
My gym time saves my sanity with 12 hours of meetings on tap! Would love to join you on a ride!
I am so jealous of your warm running! The palm trees and water look like a great view. I woke up to 20゚ and snow today here and I am so ready for Spring!
I think we’re supposed to be in the 30s tomorrow morning, but it will warn up again soon.
I swear that looks like where I ran in Miami but i’m pretty sure it wasn’t there — but it looks similar. Still running along water is always soothing to me. It’s cold again here, sigh.
There’s a lot of miles of coastline with palm trees and high rises 😉
It cold brisk here today too! March had to go out like a lion.
Or maybe April is coming in like a lion, LOL!
Holy crap…that Orange Everest look intense! I love all your pics of Miami…such a scenic place (at least the routes that you captured) 😉 Thanks for linking with us on the WRD!!
Yeah, I found a pretty route this time. Orange Everest was intimidating!
I’m glad you found a better place to run in Miami. Actually it looks amazing to me! Haha about the dead end pier–that has happened to me before too. Not a bad problem to have if you consider where you are!
How nice that you’re already warm enough to get out on the bike. Someday…
I’ve gotten yelled out for going out on one of the piers in Chicago to get a good photo. — one that is restricted government access vs. military.
Don’t you love it when you have the hotel gym to yourself? It’s the best!
It looks like you had an amazing route for your outdoor run. I’ve actually never run in Florida but I would really love to do a race in Miami one day.
I’d have to find a race in winter – I don’t do well with heat and humidity and Miami has both!
Beautiful sights on your run! I could get used to that view. Although I’m sure the Florida heat and humidity would zap me fast!!
Yes, I couldn’t bear to run outside when I was there in August — it was stifling even at 5 am.
Now that is a very different and pretty run in Miami! Love the sights!
I miss running along the lakefront but I am simply too lazy to drive to the lakefront. Oh well. Maybe once it warms up, I will make that effort. 🙂
Hah! That’s how I am at home. I could drive to so many scenic places, but 90% of the time I just run from my house.
Ok THAT run is very similar to what I did when we stayed on Key Biscayne, except the reverse. Nice! Way to make the most of your stay in Miami workout wise! Oh wow look at you riding outside already. It’s still so cold here but hopefully soon!
It was 79 on Saturday and then in the 50s on Sunday! That’s our spring.
gorgeous run in Miami!! and how awesome to have the hotel gym to yourself!!!
looks like the rest of the week was also good – nice one!
Thanks! It was a pretty good week.
Beautiful views from your Miami run! And wow, that OTF class sounds really tough.
It’s definitely a treadmill workout I would NEVER do on my own!
I LOVE running in Florida. I have never run in Miami so the views of the water are the best.
Now it’s gray and windy and cold….spring??? when??
Yeah, our spring only lasted a day — it will be back soon I hope!
Same here.
Those photos from your Miami run are stunning! What a brilliant week of training. Go you!
Thanks! It makes up for some of the less scenic views near my hotel. 😉
So glad you found a better running route for this Miami run! Looks like some great views! And so nice that it’s warm enough for you to get back on the bike!
Yes, now I know where the nice part of town is!
Ah, the Rickenbacker – that used to be a part of my daily commute. I never did get to run on that bridge though. I wasn’t into running at all when I lived down south.
I’m glad you found a better route than the heart of downtown Miami. Brickell is a really pretty street.
And great job on the rest of your workouts. You did an amazing job, especially for being on the road.
Thanks. How funny that you know that bridge. Traffic didn’t seem too bad, but it was pretty early. 😉
Your pics running in Miami are simply gorgeous! It sounds like it was a bit of an adventure for sure!
Great job with the gym workouts! Same clothes is how I roll sometimes too! Less to pack 🙂
Enjoy your week!
I really enjoy exploring on my runs if I have time — and feel safe! I couldn’t re-wear running clothes, but I didn’t sweat much in the gym. :-0
